I descend from this Woodson Daniel. He married Nancy Harris, dau of Rev War Captain Jesse. They had 8 children: Travis b. 21 Feb 1806, Frances (Fanny) b. 3 Jun 1808,Nancy b. 5 Aug 1809, Julia Ann b. 22 Jun 1812, Thomas H. . 24 Feb 1814, Woodson b. Oct 1818, an unknown child b. 1819 and Cicero Murphy Daniel b. 1823. Woodson Daniel was a majistrate at the time Davidson County was formed from Rowan County in 1822. When Davidson County was formed it was divided into five voting districts (Hanes, Hampton, Lexington, Ward and Daniel). The Daniel District included all of southern Davidson County. The Daniel Precinct was later divided into Silver Hill, Emmons, Alleghany, Jackson Hill and Healing Springs towmships. Nancy and Woodson Daniel are buried at Lick Creek Church in Healing Springs in Southern Davidson County. Their graves are beneath the 2 unlettered markers beside the graves of Woodson Daniel, Jr. and his wife. Woodson died sometime before 1830 and not sure when Nancy died. As you mentioned his father was James Daniel and mother was Rebecca Travers Adderton. They married in 1779 shortly after Rebecca was widowed by the death of her husband Jeremiah Adderton. My guess is the Albemarle will you read was dated about 1761. This was not James Daniel that married Elizabeth Woodson (the marriage is also very difficult to prove). For my own position I know that James Daniel and William Woodson, brother of Elizabeth jointly patented some property in Goochland County. I know that an Elizabeth Daniel was a witness of the will of Benjamin Woodson, Jr, her supposed brother. Woodson Daniel's second son was named Benjamin Woodson (and his name my have been BW also but I've never been able to prove that). This James Daniel outlived James of Albemarle and was found in Halifax Co., VA as late as 1768. I don't know where or when he died. James Daniel, Jr. in Albemarle, Virginia, there is no mention of a son by the name of Woodson. He lists nine children in his will. Hi, Jan. You underestimate yourself and your abilities. You are correct about William DANIEL's three executors, "...appoint my sons in law Lovick YOUNG and John J. COOKand my son William H. DANIEL executors of this my last will.." The typrscript in the SC Archives includes all three. Having previously mentioned two transcripts of William H.'s father's Will, and the variances in them, the one from Lowndes posted at http://files.usgwarchives.org/al/lowndes/wills/willbookb/wdaniel.txt states: "Lastly, I nominate my son, William H. Daniel, Executor of this my las [sic] will and testament. In witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Camden this twenty fifth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight." I did not check both, and should have, thanks for keeping me straight. I do not have copies of the originals and will readdress my notes concerning this. Wonder if the Lowndes record actually omits the other two executors or was it a transcriber's error? Mentioning differences, The SC Archives copy shows one of William's daughters as "Milberry S." while the Lowndes copy names her as "Milling S." When asked about the Milling name, Carolyn Goloka, who transcribe the Lowndes version, confirmed it is definitely Milling in the Lowndes record. Regardless, Milberry/Milling is "Miss Serena M., daughter of Mr. William DANIEL of this place." who married Robert MARTIN of Charleston on "the 16th inst.", as published in the Camden Journal, 27 Sep 1828. She lived out her life in Charleston. No clue as to the witnesses Christopher MATHISON, John J. BLAIR, and Ben BENCHAM <sp?>; however, there is a John MATHESON working in the Camden Independent Fire Company in 1831 along side of Edmond A. POOLE, husband of Eleanor Amelia DANIEL. BLAIR being a close neighbor may be reason enough to explain his being a witness, but is there a family tie as well? Re: ages of children of William and Eleanor DANIEL of Kershaw County, SC, yes, birth order in the Will: i. Jane D. YOUNG: b. bef 1797, age 53 in the 1850 census of Kershaw. South Carolina census records indicate that Jane was probably born between 1790 and 1795. Lovick YOUNG married Jane DANIEL, probably between 1810 and 1814. There is enough difference in age between Lovick and Jane that she may have been a second wife. In 1828, William DANIEL named Jane D. YOUNG as his daughter and appointed her husband Lovick as an executor of his estate. ii. William H. the mention in the WILL, b. bef. 1810, if 21 to be executor, then before 1808. Henry based on what?) William DANIEL, 1755-1828, whom I number III, is a son of William O'DANIEL, 1720-1797, whom I number II. Wm O II's wife's name is not known to me. His father is William O'DANIEL I, 1691?-abt 1728, and his wife Frances, cir 1700-bef Mar 1758, of Stafford County, Virginia. A line of descendants in Texas offer that a handwritten history of the family names Frances' maiden name as BOSELEY, but to my knowledge nothing has been found to confirm that. There were BOSLEY families in the area and especially across the Potomic River in Maryland. I've a fair amount of information on the O'DANIELs and will share it with you, or anyone else off list. Too much to post here. The last two known uses of the O' in the descendant lines is by William, b. 1755, in Kershaw in 1802 in an estate settlement for John O'DANIEL of Kershaw, d. bef 1797, and this land record: Samuel GOODWIN,, on August 31, 1807, sold 130 acres on White Oak Creek to William O'DANIEL for $600. This tract of land was bordered by land of William O'DANIEL, Elizabeth STROBRIDGES, Moses REEVES, and George GEYDEN. Witnesses were Richard SCOTT and Daniel GARDNER. This may have been to simply tie the original surname to the properties. Just to add to the mix: What is the relationship of L. R. LLOYD in Lowndes County, Alabama, causing him to sign the bond for Parthenia WARREN's 19 Aug 1856 marriage to Edward Young DANIEL, s/o John J. DANIEL and Huldah HILL? A Leroy LLOYD line is in my brother's wife's family. Yep, east and southeast Alabama. Alex O'DANIEL is not known to me. There are at least three lines of O'DANIEL in VA, NC, SC, GA and AL on to Texas. Immigrants to SC in the mid 1750s or a little latter were in Laurens County, SC before moving on. Naturally, they were William, John, Elizabeth, etc. too. I've a little on them, but only enough to find the separation from the Stafford, Prince William in 1732, and later Fairfax County in 1742, Virginia O'DANIELs. Same land only the political boundaries changed. Some of William of Stafford's descendants went to KY, the area now known as Lewis County, but other than on the original Virginia land grants, our O'DANIEL name hasn't been located there. Remember too that the NC/SC border was a little fluid in the 1700s until finally settled. Camden bordered NC. William II's family family was in York and others of this family were in York and Chester Counties. I wouldn't immediately throw out the NC birth info until I knew just where in NC. There were a lot of YOUNGs in NC near the SC border. Grandpa gave him and his sister "Mary BRAKELY" each 200 acres of land in Fayette County, KY, part of a 2701 acre tract old John acquired on the waters of Licking in the area now known as Lewis County. Still haven't found those grandkids and their families, if any. Back to your William H. DANIEL of Lowndes Co., AL: Since we agree that the William H. of Kershaw was b. bef. 1810, it is unlikely William H., son of William II and Eleanor DANIEL of KERSHAW is he. Hi, Bob I'm sorry about the problem with my email yesterday; it was down all day. And, now that my mid-terms are over I can finish this reply to your earlier email. First, let me say that it was so encouraging to hear from you and to finally begin to identify some new leads. Perhaps there's hope of sorting out the Wm's and finding a connection for our family after all! I'm not a skilled or sophisticated researcher like so many on the list and it seems like I'm probably asking a bunch of "duh" questions or asking for information that everyone else knows but I hope you'll bear with me. What do I have on our Wm. Henry? Darn little. Mostly bits and pieces from census records or following associated and/or collateral families, and from the incredible generosity of others. I summarize it at the end. After reading your question about the will of William Daniels of Camden, I double checked myself and find that I misspoke. I had gotten the "Wm Henry" from some correspondance with the Alabama Archives but when I went back to my copy of the actual will filed in Lowndes Co., AL, all of the references were to William H. Daniel (sometimes Daniels). Thank you for the correction.  In reference to William H., you stated "He was probably born before 1810 if old enough to be the only executor named in his father's 1828 will, recorded in both Lowndes Co., AL, and Camden District."  The copy of the will and probate I have from the Lowndes Co. Archives (certified by Judge of the Court of Ordinary of Kershaw District Hale F. McGee on 31st January 1834), shows that he was not the only executor. It says "appoint my sons and law (?) Lovick YOUNG and John J. Cook and my son William H. Daniel executors of this my last will..." and, John J. Cook made oath to execute it. So at least based on this, there were three of them appointed. I still think you're right about the age, as I explain below. Separately, I'm curious - do you know what the relationship was between William and the men who witnessed the will (Christopher MATHISON, John J. BLAIR, and Ben BENCHAM <sp?>)? Dates of birth:  As you know, along with wife Elianor, the children, in order named in the will were: Mary D. Cook (b. abt 1791, wife of John J. Cook, co executor) William H. Daniels Milling (?) S. Daniel (daughter) Jane P. Young (b. abt 1797, wife of Lovick Young, co-executor) *John J. Daniel (b. abt 1810) *Francis S/ or L? Daniel (son)*Elanor A. Daniel *the last three being separately identified as the "three youngest", presumably born after 1810 (using John J's age as an anchor), see below.  Regardless of being named (co) executor, it confirms that William H. was born before 1810, but does this imply the kids were listed in birth order? Is there another source that verifies their d.o.b.?  From the 1850 census, there is a Jane P. Young living next to the Blair's in Kershaw (Lovick is shown in 1840, also next to the Blair's) and she is listed as 53, b. abt 1797; Mary Cook is listed as 59, b. abt. 1791. Lowndes Co., AL has a Francis Daniel (too old for this one, but perhaps an Uncle?). and John J. is listed in Lowndes Co., as 40, b. abt 1810. This age for John J. is consistent with the 1840 census where he is shown as between 20 and 30. An Ellen Daniel is listed on the same page - is this William's widow? She is shown as 60-70, with 2 males 20-30, 1 female 20-30, and 1 each 5-10.  But who are the two males 20-30? One of them could be William H. but that is inconsistent with John J. being one of the three youngest and his d.o.b of 1810, or 30.  If Milling (?) is the female 20-30, (again inconsistent with John J.'s designation and d.o.b.), one of the males could be her husband; Francis and Elanor could be the two 5-10 year olds. You referred to the father as "William O'DANIEL III (1755-1828) of Kershaw, Camden District, SC,".  and from your most recent email, you said he was "part of the White Oak Creek William O'DANIEL, 1720?-1799, family:  William DANIEL, 1775-1828, and Eleanor MARLOR(?), 1773?-1842, of Kershaw Co., SC were the parents of William H. of Kershaw." Do you have more on the lineage? When did he drop the "O' "? Is the Elizabeth O'Daniel in the 1790 census for Camden part of the family then? How does Alex O'Daniel b. abt 1802 SC listed in Lowndes 1850 fit in? or, in 1860 Dallas Co., Eliz. Daniel, Dallas Co. b. abt 1799 SC?  Did the White Oak property stay in the family after William of Kershaw (1775-1828) death?  It's interesting to find several Manning families here given the Manning who witnessed our Wm Henry's marriage. I'm not sure where the POOLE info might fit with my Wm. Henry but it's good to have it. "Amelia Eleanor was Wm. H.'s sister.  She married 24 Sep 1831 in Camden, SC Edmund Augustus POOLE of New York City, per the published announcement.  He was listed as "E. A. POOLE" in it."  and  "William H. POOLE, abt 1835-abt 1864, was s/o Eleanor Amelia DANIEL (d/o William DANIEL and Eleanor MARLOR(?) of Kershaw, SC) and Edmund Augustus POOLE. He may have been named for Eleanor's brother, William H. DANIEL. Wm H. POOLE married Martha Evelyn CLOUD in Lowndes Co., AL."   Prior to this, I don't recall running across the Poole name but, in 1850 there's a William POOL b. abt 1834, AL,  in the household of James and Ellen A MEADOWS, both age 32, she's listed as born in SC.; and in 1860 there's a W. H. POOLE, b. abt 1833, AL md to M. E. Poole, b. abt 1838 in SC and children 1 and 2 yrs old.  I don't recognize any of the other families in the immediate vicinity as being names I've run across before. I'm just learning about land records but have found lots of Daniels listed on the BLM site for Lowndes, Dallas, and esp. Crenshaw Cos. Crenshaw is relevant because of its parent counties 1) Montgomery was created 6 Dec 1816 from Monroe; 2) Dallas was created 9 Feb 1818 from Monroe, Montgomery and parts of the Creek cession; 3) Butler was created 13 Dec 1819 from Monroe and Conecuh; 4) Lowndes was created 20 Jan 1830 from Butler, Dallas, and Montgomery; 5) Crenshaw was created 24 Nov 1866 from Butler, Coffee, Covington, LOWNDES, and Pike. BLM shows dates in Crenshaw prior to formation so the records must reflect today's county. I guess after 1866 we need to be considering Crenshaw records, too. Has someone already mapped out these Daniels? If not, as I have time and learn how, I guess I'll need to and see if it gives any new leads. Does anyone recognize one of theirs? Here are the earlier ones: Darius Daniel (b. AL per census) is first shown 6/12/1834, Lowndes Elias and Abel Daniel first show on  4/15/1835 and Darius makes his next one (Lowndes, Crenshaw and Dallas respectively). Ephraim Daniel shows up in Crenshaw 8/10/1847 Francis Daniel first aquires 5/10/1826 in Montgomery and then again 5/9/1837 and 5/20/1837 in Crenshaw along with James Daniel 5/20/1837 in Lowndes and Perry; and 8/1/1837 in Crenshaw Josiah Daniel 5/20/1841 in Lowndes Nathaniel R. Daniel 10/21/1834 in Lowndes William Daniel 5/20 and 8/1/1837 in Crenshaw (same as Francis and James, above) and there are records for Leonard, Theophilas, Thomas and Thomas F. in Crenshaw. "DAY" is a family that shows up a lot around ours - do you know of any connection to your Daniels? What about the "WARREN" families? Both my Daniel line and the Whatley line of Ann's brother Edmund have this name in several generations. With respect to our Wm. Henry, to recap the very little we know: md. Ann E. WHATLEY 7th/8th October 1857 (dau. of Elizabeth Unk and probably Wilson M. Whatley); bond co-signed by Thomas C. CRIMM (?) The family appears associated with and is surrounded by several families with roots in Kershaw and Edgefield Cos., SC All other info on Wm. Henry is inferred: Prior to his marriage, Wm. Henry was: - b. in NC or "Carolina" 17 Sep 1825 from family notes - b. in NC per dau. census records (dau. living with widowed mom) - b. in AL or SC per son's census records - md. Ann Whatley per family notes -"Henry" Daniel md. Ann Blanchard per family notes - LDS records assign to Josiah After the marriage info on Wm. Henry: - d. 10 Dec 1868 in AL per family notes - 2 known children, James Warren (md. Stella COLLINS) and Mary (md. DANIEL, son of William O'DANIEL III (1755-1828) of Kershaw, Camden District, SC, is one of mine, but I have not found much.  He was probably born before 1810 if old enough to be the only executor named in his father's 1828 will, recorded in both Lowndes Co., AL, and Camden District. After the death of his father in 1828, many of William's siblings and his mother moved to Lowndes County, Alabama, probably the reason that his father's will was also recorded in Lowndes County as well as Camden District, South Carolina. William's mother, Eleanor, and his siblings, John J., Francis Levi(?)/S.(?)., and Eleanor Amelia POOLE were in Lowndes County, AL, arriving in the early 1830s and died there, Eleanor "Ellen" in 1842.  Whether William H. was in Lowndes is not known to me. In Talbot County, Georgia. on 4 Nov 1833, a William DANIEL witnessed a deed for William PARKS, giving land for a church. (Talbot County, GA Deed Book J, p. 110) William H.'s brother, John J., was receiving mail at the Talbotton Post Office before 1834 and married Hulda HILL in Talbot County on 6 March 1834. Crim born abt 1811, SC."  Here is a surname association from 1797 Kershaw:  Jurors named for Kershaw County in Nov. 1797 were : John MCDONALD, Patrick BROWN, William DANIEL, Daniel FAUST, and Peter CRIM.  This William is thought to be the father of William H. You also mentioned the strong family ties to Edgefield and the DANIEL line there.  The William DANIEL III and Eleanor MARLOR(?) line out of Kershaw was cousin to the William DANIEL and Lucretia BELL line of Edgefield. William III's brother, Josiah L. married his first cousin, once removed, Mary DANIEL, d/o William and Lucretia.  Mary's sister Martha (Capt. Bryant) MARSH moved to Wilcox County, AL in 1820s.  Mary Daniel HATCHER (by then widow of Jeremiah HATCHER and Josiah DANIEL) and her son William Francis DANIEL were in Butler, Wilcox, and Dallas Cos., AL, (all bordering Lowndes) between 1838 and 1850 before moving on to Freestone County, TX in 1850.  A number of cousins were also Autauga, bordering Lowndes to the north.  Just something to consider. BTW:  Where did you find William H. of Camden listed as "William Henry"?  In two separate transcripts of his father's Will, containing minor variations, and an abstract from the SC Archives, he is named only as William H. John, This is part of the White Oak Creek William O'DANIEL, 1720?-1799, family. William DANIEL, 1775-1828, and Eleanor MARLOR(?), 1773?-1842, of Kershaw Co., SC were the parents of William H. of Kershaw. Amelia Eleanor was Wm. H.'s sister. Suzanne, there is absolutely no need to apologize to anyone. There are accidental errors of varying sizes in every single family tree that has ever been. All anyone can ask is that we all be as accurate as we can be and that we keep an open mind to the fact that when new information comes in sometimes a lot of hard work is proven to have been travelled down the wrong road. As someone who regularly assists the public in genealogical research, including working with those preparing society applications, I can shed some light on how "all those experts" accepted your earlier applications that now appear to contain errors. First, we are talking about a time when almost no part of America kept government records of birth and death, and a time before census records recorded the name of each household member. Even the marriage, probate, and land records do not all survive from this time. You were correct earlier when you mentioned that societies have become somewhat stricter in the "proofs" (please notice the quote marks, any experienced genealogist will consider very little as a final unquestionable proven fact) that they will accept, but as a practical matter they cannot demand records which never existed. "Proofs" from this era are really more like hints or probabilities of the true facts than of anything that should be regarded as the final w! ord. The family connections you posted earlier sounded plausible, and would have been accepted by any society in the absence of more information. They have no way of knowing that there were several men of the same name in the correct time and place (a far more common occurrence than most realize), and that information from 2 or more have been combined, leading to an assignment to the wrong parents. This is an honest mistake that happens all the time and really cannot be "caught" by the societies, but only by a dedicated researcher with knowledge of a particular family and experience working with it. You are fortunate that several such researchers can be found on this board. Again, you have done nothing wrong, this happens regularly to all genealogists. If you believe that you have published a family tree containing major errors, it would be helpful to others in the future if you could find and edit such trees when you have the time. There is certainly no obligation to do so, but it would be a nice gesture and very helpful for future genealogists. Best wishes.
