Author: RichardDale1972 Surnames: Dale Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dale/1250.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jackie, Here's my summary of DNA testing. Y-DNA testing. For males only. Assists in identifying a common paternal male ancestor (ie father, grandfather, GGfather etc.) up to 22 generations back. This is great for surname testing. If you're female, have your father, brother or paternal uncle take this test. FTDNA is my tester of choice for this. Results can be entered into Ancestry and y-search to find more results. mt-DNA testing allows you to test for a common ancestor along the maternal line. Both males and females can take this. This is not at all useful for surname testing. FTDNA is my tester of choice for this. Autosomonal DNA testing allows you to test all pedigrees back 4-5 generations and find matches. Ancestry DNA has a large US database of these, but not many tools. FTDNA has a reasonable size database. Ancestry results can be exported and imported to FTDNA (for a fee). Also GEDmatch, a free tool, accepts the import of Ancestry and FTDNA Autosomonal DNA results. My preferred path right now, since I'm a big ancestry user, is to do the autosomonal DNA test on ancestry and also pay to have them included on FTDNA. FTDNA and GedMatch offer chromosome viewing capabilities so that if you get multiple confirmed matches, you can start to identify which patches of DNA match on which chromosomes and infer that new matches with similar characteristics are likely to come from those confirmed pedigree lines. Unfortunately Ancestry is only currently selling autosomonal DNA tests to US residents. Call them to complain! I've done all three DNA tests. But, as I have been reading about the autosomal DNA testing, I wonder if I can get the information by testing myself (I am female). I will continue to investigate possibilities. I would appreciate any perspectives you might have. Jackie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My problem with it is that it does not jibe with the age Nicholas gave in the 1624 Virginia Muster [20]. Parish Registers of that time had a legal responsibility to the crown to keep records. Human error is always possible, but there were surname Dales in many locations in Great Britain, and Nicholas was a fairly common 1st name. So, while it's intriguing and should be considered a possibility, i don't see this as definitive. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Are you a male (or know one) with the surname Dale and want to find common paternal line ancestors? The way to do this is via Y-DNA testing. Right now FamilyTreeDNA have a special until 26 Jul on their basic Y-DNA37 test or their Family Finder (autosomonal) Y-DNA12 test - both of which represent good value in my opinion. There is a Dale surname project on FTDNA for researching Y-DNA results. Right now there are only 23 members so a few more would be appreciated to try and track things down further. Cheers, Richard. Had my son's DNA done and was amazed when it came up with Norway. Had no idea. I don't have much on my Dales. My Grandfather was Jeptha Dale and he was born in Kentucky. His first wife, again Kentucky, was Mary Frillingsdorf. Second wife was Modesta Berkeley - my Grandmother. My GGrandfather was William Dale and my GGrandmother was Margaret Underwood. All Kentucky. I have more on the wives, but am still tracking Dales - about whom I have nothing. Brick wall, except for that tantalizing "Norway". Last record of him was in the 1851 census. Also his sister Mary born 1848 in Brighton. Last record in 1871 census in Brighton. Also Mary's daughter Alice born 1866 in Brighton. Where was she and who was she with in 1881? My interest is that Alice was born illegitimate (have birth certificate), but her mother Mary gave the father's name of William Dale (I believe a brother of Mary who died the year before) to have her christened and Alice gave Thomas as her father's name, Wheelwright deceased, when she married. I would like to know if my idea that Mary died after 1871 and so Alice went to her uncle to live and hence believed Thomas was her father. I have searched all the records and can find nothing. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family or any ideas as to where I can go from here. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
