I have been trying for some time to figure out the relationship between your ancestor Edward and my ancestor John Dale. I suspect that Edward was a nephew or cousin to my John Dale. I have been researching Dales in County Derry from whence ours came. Charles Dale in Shawville who is also decended from Edward had his DNA done and it shows a close relationship but too far back for Edward to have been John's son. Also Edward was a little too old having been born when John was around 20. Marriages for men 25 in Ireland at that time were very rare. It would be great to get some more DNA results for the Edward Dale line. The bottom line is that I know that we are related but am unsure how. Ironically I do know my relationship to Catherine Stuart. We are third cousins with our common ancestors being Thomas Lett and Eliza Martin. If you are interested in information from my research, please contact me at ronaldjdale@netscape.net. Ron Dale Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My ancestor was Edward Dale, and we come from the long line of Edwards. My great grandfather Edward crossed over from the Quebec side and settled in Haley Station, Ontario - literally just across the Ottawa River. My dad was Denzil, my grandfather was Rhorison, my great-grandfather was Edward and his wife was Martha Barber. His father was Edward and his mother was Elizabeth Arnold. I have two other siblings: Bradford and Penny. My mother was Audrey Gagnon. We call ourselves the Ontario Dales, but our ancestor, Edward, came over with John Sr. and was one of the pioneers that settled in what later became Shawville Quebec. I found out from him that the homestead where his eldest son lives actually originally belonged to the Armstrongs. As in Armstrong Shoes in Ottawa - my cousin Blair Armstrong is still currently living - his mother was a Dale by birth and married back into the Armstrong family. They seemed to have a thing with that in this family. It is too bad you never got to meet Merwood he was quite special - he actually lived in Chesterville. It has certainly been fun working on this and my sister has been feeding me little tidbits that she remembers - so we have been talking alot lately. Not that we don't usually talk at least once a week - we have always been close but especially so since our Mom passed away. Looking forward to your email. I also came across Death Notices for my g-grandfather and gg-grandfather from rootsweb under Families with Roots in Northern Ireland. The contac! t was Joneill119@aol.com interesting - I think I may have come across your father in these records it was a Dale listed in Stittsville - I should have printed it can't remember the dates sorry. Talk to you soon. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Like anyone working on genealogy I wish that I had started this much earlier in life. I met Charles Dale from Shawville last year and he likely knows your Uncle Dale. Charles also had his DNA done so we could determine the relationship between our John Dale and his ancestor Edward. Some had assumed that they were brothers but the DNA says that they were a little more distantly related--probably cousins. I think that the Thomson family discussion concerning Scots or Irish heritage is very interesting. Like the Dales, the Thomsons likely came from Scotland around 1690 to settle in Ireland. This means that they were in Ireland for about 150 years. They have been in Canada at least 170 years! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. But my Uncle Dale mentioned to me that he gets people referred to him all the time about info on the Dales. He then refers them back to the archives in Shawville as he says there is an abundant amount of info on the Dales & Armstrongs and of course the Hodgins. He mainly focused on the Thomson family tree as their name was not as long standing as the other 3 names in Pontiac. So when my sister and I actually get up to Shawville we are going to take a look at the most recent family tree book that he has. I will see if the names match with Walter and Barbara. My grandfather Lionel Thomson and his siblings argued amongst themselves as to whether they were of scottish or irish heritage. After they had passed away and only my great Uncle Ivan was still alive he decided that they were of scottish heritage and sailed out of Ireland. As you have stated they were actually irish. I will have to bring that up with Uncle Dale. By the way did you know M! erwood Dale - his father was Thomas Leonard Dale, Arletta's brother's son? He and two older siblings were born in New Brunswick while the younger ones were born in Pontiac County. Florence was the daughter of David Moorehead and Barbara Pitt, one of 10 children. David and Barbara were born in Ireland. He seems to have had a brother named John who was married to a Florence and this is likely where your Florence got her name--from her aunt.
