Hi Janice, Yes, Sladka is the feminine form of Sladky. Of course, not to create too much confusion <grin>, Sladek takes the spelling of Sladka, Sladky, Sladkova, etc. depending on how it is used .... So whether the Sladka name originally came from Sladek I don't know. The originations of names can be rather interesting. I do know that Sladek goes back to at least the early 1600s in my line - don't know about before since records simply don't exist. There are 41 occurrences of Frnoch at the Ministerstvo vnitra Ceske republiky website and no occurrence of Fernoch. These sites are: For male surnames in alphabetical order: http://www.mvcr.cz/statistiky/jmena/muzi_p/index.html For female surnames in alphabetical order: http://www.mvcr.cz/statistiky/jmena/zeny_p/index.html Details on this site are available from the Czech List Archive in an e-mail by Marek Blahus dated 10 Jul 2001 with subject "More information: Czech surnames listed" Have fun .... Hi Jim, Thanks again. The surname sites are interesting. So, I wonder how far my family names go back. I have Pravecek, Sladky/Sladka and maybe even Sladek and Frnoch. I now need to see how I can get more info before I can start in the CR. For everyone's information, the original link to this web site (Nejcetnejsi jmena a prijmeni v Ceske republice) is located at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~elainetmaddox/czgenealogy.htm It is found under the section entitled " Czech Genealogical Research" and is listed as: "Surname Frequency <http://www.mvcr.cz/statistiky/jmena/muzi_p/index.html>(males) and <http://www.mvcr.cz/statistiky/jmena/zeny_p/index.html>(females) in the Czech Republic. The last column is the number of individuals having that name. The first column is the frequency of the name in the entire country." http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~elainetmaddox/index.htm This is the "official" web site for this particular Mail List and one doesn't have to go through the "List Archives" to find where this thread originated.
