I help run the local Family History Center and thought maybe an explanation of the rental policy would help answer some questions. The rental fee of $3.50 is to pay for mailing from the family history Library in Salt Lake and back again. With an estimated mailing time of 2 weeks there and two weeks back that leaves 2 weeks to view the film. For most of us that is not enough time. The film can be renewed two more times for 6 weeks at a time and then becomes indefinite. The total cost of $10.50 is then applied to producing another film so that it can be loaned out to some one else. That way a film is not tied up too long when others want to research the same information. I think it is a very reasonable charge for what we get in return. The reason we are not allowed to take the films out of the Family History Center is due to the agreements made when the LDS are allowed to film the records that the film not leave the premises. Copyrights and all that stuff. Some don't allow the films to leave the Family History Library in Salt Lake at all(Unfortunately those always seem to be the ones I want...)And of course not leaving the building protects the great assets of the library from being lost or stolen. Ron, I did not know you could purchase the film from the FHC -- at least my local FHC says I cannot. What I have done is to renew the film two more times so that they will stay on an "indefinite" basis for anyone to use. I currently have 7 rolls from Ryglice, Poland, and some surrounding towns. I also have some other information (not Church records) for my uncle's birthplace in Yugoslavia!!! In addition, I have purchased the fiche for the IL birth and death indexes -- cannot remember exactly how many I have but 153 or thereabouts comes to mind. I have not looked at these indexes in quite a while. Lorraine ______________________________

I have no problem with that charge -- I am ever so glad to have the film at my FHC for me -- or anyone else looking at that same film -- to be able to view it and I am sorry I did not know the policy about letting the film out of the FHC!!!
