As a volunteer, I received this update from STeve Morse. We need more volunteers to finish this project. Think about it! It is very rewarding. Judi Phase III of the SHip-Lists project is quickly nearing completion, way ahead of when I anticipated. You all just pulled a rabbit out of a hat. Rather than do a lot of reassigning to get it completed any sooner, I'll just let it finish up naturally. Those of you who have outstanding phase III rolls, please continue working on them but don't feel that you are under and pressure. However please let me know if you won't be able to complete them, in which case I'll have them reassigned. So here's where we now stand. We have detailed lists of ship arrivals including frame numbers for 1892 to 1897 (thanks to phase I) and for 1913 to 1924 (thanks to phases II and III). Next I'd like to focus on 1897 to 1907. There are 1067 rolls involved and they are important because they cover the peak years of immigration. As in phase III, we are fortunate in that one of the volunteers has been researching his own family by going through every manifest for an entire year and making ship lists as he has been going. He has been doing 1907 which covers some 250 rolls, of which he currently has completed about half and expects to have the other half completed by June. So that leaves 800 rolls remaining to do for phase IV. That's more than what we did in phase III, and I promise this won't be another two-week quickie project. I realistically expect it to go on for several months, and there will be no time pressure. The rules in phase IV will be similar to phase III. Once again we have the list of ships generated by INS/NARA and all that remains to do is add the frame and port values and to make any necessary corrections. The lists for these earlier years came from Marian Smith at INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) and I have found them to be more accurate than the lists for the later years that were generated by volunteers at NARA. So there should be considerably fewer errors to correct. Please let me know if you are interested in signing up for phase IV and I'll start handing out assignments. Of course if you have any outstanding phase III assignments, you should get those finished first. And thanks. -- Steve
Hi Can these be done on line or with minimal cost to send to Australia as I would be happy to do a few. Perhaps you can forward this to Steve.
