Judy - How sad that we (all of us) don't ask questions until there is no one around who can answer them. To have all that information and no idea of what it really is must be extremely frustrating. I have about a dozen pictures which are "my mystery". Have you considered contacting other organizations (Czech) in that area for any suggestions or information. My first thought was the Sokol which is located at 420-424 E. 71st St. It was a center for Czech cultural and life in the early 1900's and earlier - you probably know that already. Some people to contact there would be Beatrice Cihak or Ed Chlanda. Here is a phone number that appeared on one of Sokol letter heads I received: 212-861-8206 Some time in 2002 they were fortunate enough to have a graduate from the School of Arts at Charles University and a recipient of an award from the Czech Archives Society. His name is Jiri Vichta and is an employee of the State Regional Archives in Praha. He spent three months at the Sokol helping them. I just thought they might have some suggestions for you. The Library Committe of the Sokol meets most Wednesday evenings at 7 P.M. except July and August. I have not been able to visit -- I really wish I lived close enough to be able to drop in and visit -- even volunteer. Good luck with your project. How are you managing to volunteer? Do you make visits to the city and stay there or with friends. Just trying to figure out a way to get involved myself. Take care. Susan
Thanks, Susan, for your interest and response. I take the train into NYC fromCT...about 90 minutes. Thanks for the info on the Sokol and Jiri. I will pursue those aspects. I simply called the pastor to ask her about the baptism certs, marriage certs and she told me of all the documents that are stuffed in various cabinets, closets etc. (the safe was apparently stoled about 30 years ago which contained most of these documents) So, myself and another Cz-lister, met at the church last week. We managed to organize one closet. The church is in desperate need of funds so we are putting aside stuff that we think can be tag-saled etc. For example, there are boxes of props that (apparently) were used in various productions that took place there. We are hoping to be in touch with the original church members in order to shed light on these productions and to identify people that are in the many BOXES of unlabeled pix. thanks for the info and the interest. judi clinton, CT PS Wouldn' t it be great to find out where the safe went?
