Hello List, I thought I'd let you know of my experience with NARA. The only information I had for my grandmother was her name and that she arrived in the US in 1888. I sent an e-mail to NARA asking what steps I should take to find her. I gave name and year of arrival....THAT'S ALL I had no idea where he landed, ship, etc!. Two days later I received a phone call from NARA. The lady was extremely nice and pumped more info out of me than I knew I had...We deduced her date of birth from the census and that she had come from Germany with a small daughter. I didn't know if gma had come through Castle Garden, but the lady on the phone said don't worry, NARA had all the records! Even tho we did not come up with a listing for gma, I was very inpressed with the extent NARA people will go to to help you. I must also tell you that on several occasions I have used the proper NARA forms and received the correct information and ships manifests. By all means use NARA!
