Dear Listers, In a report recently received from the Czech Republic, my gr gr grandmother's (Marie Janat) marriage record names her mother as ANNA nee TUPA. Her father is Antonin Janat. However, a witness to this marriage was WOJTECH TUPY. When I asked the researcher if Tupa and Tupy were the same surnames, he responded as follows: "Regarding surname of Tupa and Tupy: It is the same surname. In Czech there two forms of each surname one male form (Tupy in this case) and one female form (Tupa in this case)." When I was explaining this surname situation to a friend (maybe relative with Tupa in her line) who's taken Czech language lessons, her response was as follows: "I did some research and, assuming the male name is Tupy, then Tupa for the female is correct. The male surname Tupa converts to Tupova for females. My questions are: 1) would Anna nee Tupa's father and brother's be called Tupy and her mother Tupa? 2) would I be correct in assuming that Wojtech Tupy could be Anna's father or brother? 3) are male surnames Tupa and Tupy are two different names? Me oh my oh, am I confused!! Thanks for any help!! Judie Mason

The last is more common for males. http://www.mvcr.cz/statistiky/jmena/zeny_p/56.html For females there is TUPOV=C1 (T with a hacek) , TUPCOV=C1, and TUP=C1. The= last=20 is more common for females. It looks like the TUPA and TUPOV=C1 ((T with a hacek) are one pair. TUPEC= =20 and TUPCOV=C1 are the second pair. TUP=DD and TUP=C1 are the third pair.= and the=20 most common usage today. Just a guess. ron mlejnek At 08:37 PM 09/21/2004, you wrote: >Dear Listers, > >In a report recently received from the Czech Republic, my gr gr=20 >grandmother's (Marie Janat) marriage record names her mother as ANNA nee=20 >TUPA.
