How does one go about finding ship's manifests for immigrants prior to Ellis Island? judi
Judy: I think I got my list for New Orleans arrivals from the Mogans, a.k.a., the Latter Day Saints; they pulled it up on a web site. But if you enter into Google "Finding Passenger Lists 1820-1940s," the very first site will take you National Archive rolls by city. Going to www.nara.gov will put you in the Archives, where your troubles have only begun; it's huge and complex, but searchable. Let me know if this works for you; if not we'll try something else. Judi - Are you searching for the surname Jindela? One source for Czech names is the Leo Baca books - about seven or eight volumes. The Mormons have them and you can order/rent the books. Probably have to read it at the research center. Let me know the names you are searching -- my library does have one volume and I'll be happy to read it for you and copy any names that may apply to your family. The Baca books list whatever information is in the original passenger record. Once you know the dates, it may be easier to search the NARA records or you can also rent the films at the Mormons too. Just let me know. Susan W.
Susan, no, I am not looking for Jindela. I inadvertantly signed in under the wrong heading. Thanks for being kind enough to reply to my email. My family name is HLUBOKY and my website is www.hlubokyfamily.com (my first attempt at a website!) thanks judi
