My tree is getting large enough that an 8x11" piece of paper won't do. HOw are people designing their trees? I anticipate mine will be equivalent to a very large picture frame and I don't think that my writing is quite neat enough. ideas, Please! Judi
There are large format forms (tree designs, semi-circles, cascading pedigrees, etc.) available from a variety of sources, or most genealogy programs will print various charts (though you need access to a large format printer - maybe a local copy shop). My favorite, though I don't have photos going back nearly as far as I have documented my ancestors, is a photographic ancestry chart I made up. Each generation sits on top of the preceding one at half the width for each individual photo. Then it is arranged so that the male lines go back to the left and the female lines go to the right. If this sounds interesting, I can post a simplified version of it on a web site. The whole thing is then sized to fit landscape in an 8x10 frame. My software program will print a several pages family tree. You have to end up taping it all together, cuz it wont work any other way, Unless you just tape each piece on the wall the way you want it. I dont have any on the wall cuz there's not enough space on my wall LOL ----- Original Message ----- From: JuDi To: CZECH-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2004 2:55 PM Subject: [CZ] family tree on paper My tree is getting large enough that an 8x11" piece of paper won't do. Dear Judi, I have never regretted buying Family Tree Maker for my computer. I have close to 250 people in my database. There are many other programs available, like Prodegy, and Rootsmagic to name 2. You of course need a computer and have to back up your data to floppy or C D regularly. Family Tree Maker (FTM) is one of the better genealogy programs out there. I've been using it myself for a number of years, and it's been mostly pleasant experience. Later versions (I have ver.11) allow for output to PDF files which you can copy to a disk and take to a local print shop to have a beautifully printed tree on a large page. I've got mine printed at Kinko's for a few bucks; black and white, roughly 50x20 inches. One caveat - if you use non-English alphabet in your tree (e.g. names, places), FTM does not handle the output to PDF file correctly. There is a way around it, however, using third party PDF printer drivers. If your family tree contains just English names (or you decide not to use foreign characters and supplement them with English alphabet equivalents), you should be fine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alice Wolfe" <alice.wolfe@worldnet.att.net> To: <CZECH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2004 5:03 PM Subject: Re: [CZ] family tree on paper > Dear Judi, > > I have never regretted buying Family Tree Maker for my computer. Judi, I use The Master Genealogist program and am very happy with it. The latest family tree I have is printed on 36" wide paper and is about 6 feet high. It has 12 generations (including myself) and room for about four more if I should ever find them! I am fortunate enough to have access to a 36" wide plotter at work, but you can cut and paste together the output from 8.5x11 as I used to do. I suppose there can be too much of a good thing. If I ever find the ancestors of my great grandfather Josef Trnka, great grandmother Antonia Sarnek or other major brick walls it will push the chart down a couple of more feet! I think I could deal with that. Dave
Judi, If you want a large family tree to display, you could use foam core or large posterboard. They have large poster size frames in a kit (4 sides you snap together) and it looks nice. Instead of printing the information, you could get some very pretty labels (Michaels Crafts) and type the names and put them in the proper place on the "tree". I have also seen some very pretty "trees" online that you could print and enlarge on a copy machine. And copy onto the poster. I like these to display at Genealogy Societies or seminars, etc. Think I might try to do one for myself to take to our stevne's. you can go to google or any search engine - type in pedigree charts or genealogy supplies and get hundreds of links where you can either download free charts or purchase small to huge trees. ms
