Susan >Researching: Hala, Holecek, Prasek, Forst, Jedlicka, Kralicek and others > ====================================================== Hi Susan: Thanks for bringing up the Sykora's. This is the way it was used in Bohemia with an accent on the y. I have never seen it as Seykora. I guess, the e was added by immigration officials to make it sound as the original in Czech language. The Szikora is the same, as the z was added in Hungary, to make it sound in Hungarian as in the Czech original. Sykora is not a rare name. There were some in the town in Hungary, where I grew up. Briefly, here is a short listing of ancestors of my Grandparents: GGGrandfather, Vaclav Sykora was born in Bohemia. His wife was Katarina Kucera. GGrandfather, Vaclav Sykora (b. about 1812 in Sec.) Married Marie Sedivy in Sec. (her parents: France Sedivy and Anna Aizovy). Grandfather: Joseph Sykora, was born in 1835. in Zleby.( m. Maria Prochaska, 1869. Mezohegyes, Hungary). With the Austrian army, he was transferred at about 1853 to Hungary and never returned to his homeland. We know everything about this branch. I came to Canada in 1957. My Grandfathers siblings:: : Vaclav (b.1836, Zleby), Vincent (b. 1838.Zleby, m. Barbora Riha, 1871), Anna (b. 1842. Zleby, m. Frantisek Zajic, 1867), Antonie (b.1848. m.Theodor Seidl, 1882.), Barbora (b. 1851. m.Vaclav Barta, 1876.), My grandmothers ancestry: GGGrandfather: Karel Prochaska, (m. Anna Erben, Bohemia) GGrandfather : Karel Prochaska, (b. 1818. Ronov. m. Johanna Chittussi, 1844. Ronov). Siblings: Franciscus (b. 1821. Ronov, m. Anna Braun) Antonius (b. 1823. Ronov) Barbora (b. 1824. Ronov) Grandmother: Marie Prochaska (b. 1853. Zleby, d. 1915. Hungary): Siblings: Katerina (b. 1844. Ronov) Paulina (b. 1847. Zleby) Karel (b. 1850. Zleby) We know almost nothing about the Czech ancestors. It is possible, that some came to America. I hope, that somebody may recognize some name and can give us some clue. I know from a researcher, that there were Zajic's in Zleby in the 30's. Since the Utah Genealogical Society was not allowed to copy records in the Czech Republic, we hired a researcher, to find the other branches of the family. He had problems however, because my grandfathers siblings moved around and he could not trace them. It is possible, that a brother of my grandfather moved to Tupadly, Bohemia. Cheers, and happy New Year! Joseph in Calgary. Joseph -- thank you for sharing your story with me. I will tuck it away in my records as I continue my research. As I said before, the family has no idea where in Bohemia the family originated. That information may never be found. To make things sadder, Lawrence Seykora, residing in Miami, passed away suddenly over the Christmas holiday. However, I am going to continue my research as long as I can for them. I'm sure you are aware that there were Prochaska's and Jerabek's in New York City also. We can continue hoping that the Czech records will eventually be microfilmed for all to read. I know that they will be difficult to read ... but if I managed Italian records without knowledge of the language, I know I can at least make a decent attempt. Thanks again.
