Elaine, I think the Polish lists could help you much more then me. I know the searching in Poland is very complicated. I live in Bialystok since 30 years and nevertheless had not much to do with the archives and other institutions of this kind. It will come later... I will try to learn understand the system of records in Poland but it lasts some time. The most people here are not interested in genealogy, even the historians do not know much about their ancestors. I suppose the most records are in the church parishes but a huge part of it has been destroyd. The situation can be other in Western, Southern and Eastern Poland (where I live.Many of the records of Bialystok are in Belarus.) Are there any mentions to Janota and Hetz in your records which could help to find their place of origine in Poland? Maybe the name Janota is more popular in Silesia (the southern part of Poland) but it's only a thought (I opened some pages with the name Janota/Janotta on the server Wirtualna Polska). The first question sounds: Bohemia or Poland? Or Germany?
