Rose -- Thank you. I would be very interested in learning what you have. Here is what I have. Vincent Jedlicka - born in Bohemia - probably Cirkvice - about 1837. I am sort of remembering off the top of my head! Vincent was the son of Vincent Jedlicka and Anna Cochnar Married to T. Katerina Kralicek - born in Bohemia - probably Cirkvice - born about 1837 or a little later. We don't know her parents names. We do know they came from Cirkvice as this is what my grandfather told us. However, there is more than one Cirkvice; I do not think it is the one that is east of Kutna Hora but I could be wrong. My grandparents used to say that her family was from the "city" and he was a "country boy" or at least his family from the country. Whether it is the truth or not, we probably will never know. They married in Bohemia, as far as we know, and arrived in NYC approximately 1870. They had five children: Louis, Emma, Clara, Frank, Emil - all born in NYC. I assume there were other children who died as Louis was born about 1877. Seven years seems to be a long time without children; I have looked for birth records for the children I know about but did not find the earlier ones. I am planning on searching through death records to see if there might be something. Looking forward to hearing from you. Hi, I have found word "falu" on Hungarian Wikipedia http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falu . In the column on the left is czech, english, german etc. version, so that you will find that falu is word of hungarian origin and means willage. All best in the year 2008! It might be 2 words. Most search strategies depend on the first 2-3 letters so I think you need to get on a Hungarian Mail List to identify the place. Also, if Franz were naturalized or applied to be naturalized (Declaration of Intent), his exact birthplace will be listed. As someone else has written, you can obtain information from the Archives of the City of New York. If you live near NYC you can go to the Chambers Street location and search yourself. Otherwise they will do a search for you but it can get costly. There is one charge for the certificate and a certain amount for each year they must search. With the death certificate, you can learn where he was buried and it might contain his parents names (if the person registering the death knew this information). It is very likely that he had social security number --- but not all deaths were registered with them either. I think it depended if there were survivors who would have received some benefits. Was he married in the US; if so a marriage record would exist. If you go to: www.stevemorse.org - scroll down to groom index or search. There are two Frank Walla's - one married in 1912 and the other in 1915 (I think). This record gives the marriage certificate # and the name of the bride. You can then obtain a marriage certificate - sometimes that contains information like parents names -- you just never know. Both of them were married in Manhattan but that is not unusual. Could have moved to Brooklyn later. The 1912 Walla was married to Mary Forst. The 1915 Walla was married to Petrolina Toth. Sound familiar? Forst is a Bohemian name; it is the name of my great great grandmother who was born and lived in Bohemia -- where I do not know yet. Hope this helps. Write back if you need more help. To Joseph Szikora, I hardly ever see the name Szikora listed. My mother's aunt married Lawrence Seykora. They lived in NYC. I have been helping them research their name which is spelled Seykora. I'm guessing it is a spelling variant of your name. I don't have all my papers in front of me -- but Larry's father was born in NYC. His grandfather was born somewhere in Bohemia but we don't know where. Do you know where your family and name originated. I'd be happy to share what information I have gathered. The grandfather born in Bohemia married Rose. They arrived in NYC separately; she arrived with a baby, Rose. Baby Rose died in NYC but I believe she had 12 siblings including three sets of twin siblings. As I said, I would share any information I have collected. Looking forward to hearing from you. Is this your tree? It says Franz Walla died Nov 1955 in a New York hospital. _http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=1walla&id=I501677528_ (http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=1walla&id=I501677528) I would begin by calling, visiting, or writing to the Kings County health department and start a search for a death certificate. There is quite a bit of information posted in your tree here, and if you start with Brooklyn, you should have success. Also contact the genealogy and historical societies for those areas, who may be able to help you or point you in the right direction. Those societies usually compile quite a bit of information. Have you tried the Brooklyn libraries for cemetery information? There is also a Municipal Archives of the City of New York that may have information. On line data bases don't always contain all the information and sometimes contain errors. In a case like yours, I would turn to the telephone and begin making calls. If someone can't help you, they may be able to give you the name of someone else who may be able to help you. I also found this in an online database which shows that Filomena died 14 September 1937 in Manhattan. Is this the same person? Dates are off a bit. Walla Filomena 50 y Sept 14 1937 20429 Manhattan 1886 - 1887 Are you sure Franz was buried? He may have been cremated. In a message dated 12/29/2007 9:53:27 P.M. I searched the Ancestry.com WWI draft records, and there are two Frank Wallas from NY, but they both were born in NY. I also searched RootsWeb's SSDI for a "Frank" thinking he could have Americanized his first name as many have done. Do you know where his wife and siblings are buried??? And what about his wife, do you know where she is buried? They could all be in the same cemetery. Also, have you tried looking for an obituary? Unfortunately, I am not familiar with NY resources, but you might try looking for his son's obituary and/or death certificate FOR the name of the funeral home, which sometimes can give you the name of the cemetery. If the funeral home should be closed, you can call one of the other local funeral homes, and they may be able to tell you where the records are -- as I understand the records for any funeral closing is given to another local one. That's the best I know right now. Sorry I could not be of further help, but I am having the same problem locating my father's family. He was born in Bohemia but -- that is the best I know right now. Good luck....
