Unfortunately, I also thought the mayor of a town would be slow in responding. My plan is to write directly to some people who live in the village. I also have another idea which did work for me. I have been searching for a town which no longer exists -- it is now part of Cirkvice in the district of Kutna Hora. I tried searching websites re: Cirkvice but they have all been written in Czech. However, two of them had e-mail contacts. I wrote to both of them .... and they both were extremely helpful -- reaffirming the absorption of the little section of Vosrkrac into Cirkvice. So if you can find a website concerning the town you are researching, look for an e-mail address -- keep the message very simple in case they don't read English fluently. I wish you good luck. On at least two occasions I have written the mayors of Drzkov and Podmoky (Caslav area) requesting information on people with the same surname. In the case of Podmoky, the mayor had the same surname as a member of my family...I enclosed some cash for return postage....no reply, but probably had a couple of pevos. I did not receive a reply from Drzkov either. I even tried e-mailing them. I also e-mailed the mayors office in Hradec Karlove w/o response. I hate to be discouraging, but a response is unlikely...at least it was in my cases. Carol Ponec Nemec **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. I am looking for information on my ancestors JANICEK and STUDENKA from Liderovice, Vnorovy, which I understand is in Moravia. Ellis Island records indicate that, although living in Moravia, they are Bohemian. I noticed that most of the STUDENKAs coming through Ellis Island are from the same area, so I am hoping to make contact with some of their descendants here in the US or relatives from back home. JANICEK, I recognize, is more common, but I would still be interested in anyone from the same area with the same surname. What I know about Anna STUDENKA: Ethnicity: Bohemian At the age of 32, immigrated to the United States with step-daughter, Marie (age 11), and son Stepan (19 months). Departed Bremen, Germany on S.S. George Washington 16 Apr 1910. Arrived 25 Apr 1910 in New York; processed through Ellis Island Stated that her nearest relative in her country of origin was bil [sic]: Marie KURIVIAL from Liderovice, Znorovy [actually her sister-in-law] Death certificate lists father as Philip STUDENKA, mother as Bessie. She may have had an uncle named Josef STUDENKA who married Anna SUKUP (or SOUKUP); ch: Stepan (m. Apolonia KURYVIAL), John, Frances. What I know about Franz JANICEK: Found on ship mainfest of the S.S. Hannover sailing from Bremen, GER 8 Mar 1902, arr. Good Morning Listmembers, Please excuse me if I have recently posted this request. I am not sure exactly of what records Luzerne County possesses. If someone could check to see if there is a marriage certificate or application on file. Possibly birth certificates for the children born in Pennsylvania. Anything would be greatly appreciated. I have the information from the time that they moved to Minnesota in 1899-1900. I also have the last name spelled various different ways, but upon looking in most records, GAZDICK is the correct spelling. Other spellings I have are -- Gyzdick/Gayzdik/Gayszdik/Gizdik/Gayszik/Geiser/Gyzick/Griesing/Gasdik Thank you in advance for any help/information. Hi Lars, Thanks again for the detailed response. I have located a couple of letters that I think I will take to the Czech lady that cuts my hair to see if she can make sense of the addresses, but thought I would send to you also. One is from Bohuslav Vanecek from about 1938. The letter is water damaged, but part of the address is: Kadericke Salony Rene Praha II Prikopy C.S.R. The other is from Milly Vlasaly (Vlasaty?), who was my father's cousin from Pilsen. The letter is dated Nov.23, 1953 and the address is: Pilsen, Tzechoslovaquia, Ti. I. Maje 68/11 Hopefully my friend can help make sense of these addresses, but thought there might be some small mistakes or clarifications you may notice. Please don't go to any trouble, but I had to send this on to you anyways just in case you have any leads. Thanks again. To Libbi of Florida and other Listers I asked the Czech War Archives in Prague about the problems with diacritical marks in the database (e.g. CERESNAK) and was informed there were system errors which couldn't be eliminated. But it exist another way how to search this database. You can write in only the year of birth (if you know it) and will get the list of all legionaires born in this year. Another way: you can search all surnames biginning with the year abt 1845. Jiri Mlejnek ---------------------------------------------------- Mamy dla Ciebie piłkę Ekstraklasy!
