3. Hire a professional researcher living in the Czech Republic. You are not going to find much of anything in Ancestry.com. You can start by reading the second half of this page and asking "Listers" for advice and recommendations for researchers: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~elainetmaddox/index.htm The list of professional researchers was removed. Many are very reputable, but some are not. If you are contacted by someone "off list", be sure to ask this Mail List for advice. It could save you hundreds of dollars. 3. Have you checked the census records that state what year they immigrated? That will help narrow the search down for others to help search for you. I don't remember which censuses tell that fact. Do you have access at all to census records? The library usually has access to ancestry or some other program that searches censuses. Just a thought. 3. If I understand the question and answer, the town or village has to be in Bohemia (Böhmen), i.e, "v. Cechach". Schwarzbach, Cerná v Pošumaví, Cerná is located 95 miles South of Prague near Ceske Krumlov and the border with Austria and it is the only location listed by ShtetlSeeker: http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp It is nicely viewed using the Atlas Mapy server: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~elainetmaddox/czgenealogy.htm#tools The other location in Gundacker's Gazeteer (13116) is listed as Horní Brusnice, Ober-Prausnitz, Ober Braussnitz by ShtetlSeeker and it is located 60 miles ENE of Prague. Since Gundacker's Gazeteer is rather reliable, I think you would have to check both locations further for information unless you have a 2nd village or district name. for example, Cerná v Pošumaví is in the Ceske Krumlov district or Okres. ron mlejnek At 04:27 PM 06/07/2008, you wrote: >F. 2. Hi Judie, I found a Schwarzbach in Czech Republic on www.jewishgen.org/Communities/locTown.asp. Its native name (native names are the ones in bold) is Cerna v Posumavi, Cerna, & it's 94 mi. S. of Prague. If you go to that website & click on the far right column, it will show villages within 10 mi radius of Schwarzbach. Also available are 3 maps to actually see the location. On occasion, I've also used www.mapy.cz to locate villages (when you are sure of the name), but since it's all in Bohemian, I find it more difficult to use than jewishgen. Hope this helps. 2. Joseph Rek
3. Hello, There are two former Schwarzbachs in South Bohemia: Cerna v Posumavi and Tust, both near the Austrian border. Cerna v Posumavi is about 10 km southwest of Cesky Krumlov on the man-made lake Lipno. Tust is right next to Suchdol nad Luznici, a town 10 km south of Trebon. Because Tust was a very small village, people tended to give either Suchdol or Trebon rather than Schwarzbach as the place of their origin. The Schwarzbach in the Denni Hlasatel is most likely Cerna v Posumavi. Joseph Rek --- On Sat, 6/7/08, Judith Mason <judith.mason@ameritech.net> wrote: From: Judith Mason <judith.mason@ameritech.net> Subject: [CZ] Czech Location Help Needed To: CZECH-L@rootsweb.com, BOHEMIA-L@rootsweb.com Received: Saturday, June 7, 2008, 4:55 PM I have an old Chicago Denni Hlasatel obituary. I tried putting www. in front of search.labs.familysearch.org but it didn't work -- maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thanks for your help. 1. [CZ] Translation Request
2. MAZAP
3. I have a picture post card dated 1909 that shows my great-grandfather Josef Zapotocky with a group of men standing outside a building holding a banner. I think the card was written by his sister in-law to him while he was working in Germany. I would appreciate any help with a translation of the writing. I would like to send the post card both front and back as an attachment so someone can help me understand the details of the place the picture was taken that was used for the post card. Josef Zapotocky was born in Kolin, Bohemia so I'm pretty sure it is written in Czech. Would anyone volunteer to help? Thanks! Mark Zapotocky
