If you want to work with a template and large paper, see http://www.marthastewart.com/images/pdf/family_tree.pdf Elaine The advantage of a bad memory is that one enjoys several times the same good things for the first time. --Friedrich Nietzsche Hello Gayle On Friday, March 19, 2004, you wrote > I have Family Tree Maker v.11 And I can print out a family tree, however, I > don't like the looks of all those pages taped together, so I want to put all > the names on a poster and frame. Gordon, I would be interested in your "tree designs". Judi, If you want a large family tree to display, you could use foam core or large posterboard. They have large poster size frames in a kit (4 sides you snap together) and it looks nice. Instead of printing the information, you could get some very pretty labels (Michaels Crafts) and type the names and put them in the proper place on the "tree". I have also seen some very pretty "trees" online that you could print and enlarge on a copy machine. And copy onto the poster. I like these to display at Genealogy Societies or seminars, etc. Think I might try to do one for myself to take to our stevne's. My family tree is 11 generations, with 6,077 known descendants (and counting) of the first known couple. When you set up a family tree with the family tree program it measures 2,628" x 13.5" and needs to be banner printed and done by a professional who will maniplate it to make it narrower and longer. HOw are people designing their trees? Judi writes above..... Hi Judi ! You could go to Legal size ( USA) at 8.5 x 14, or Ledger size at 11 x 17. You can find these at any decent copy place. You may also find a poster size, say 20 x 30. ( ? ) take your larger paper and "fold it" to 8.5 11 so that it might fit in you binder, or scrapbook custom size. Cut around on the left side so to leave a tab, that is for your 3 holes of the binder. Im to the point of wanting to print up one large tree and put it on a disk and take to my ( professional ) local copy place and print it from a disk. If its a good place they will have a larger printer that will print on larger paper, even say paper that might be really large like what an architect might have for blueprints! Kinko's is good for this, they have already told me they can do it! I imagine, depending on what the newer versions of Family Tree Maker looks like, I'll use it OR I may just use MS Excel, its infinite, and expandable for sure. I'll print w/o the grid lines, then maybe add my tree lines later. Tho I havent played with this yet so I dont know how it will work on Excel. At my local Michael's craft store here in the USA, look in their custon paper section for scrapbooks, just this past weekend I saw they had 8.5 x 11 custom printed paper ( Co. was in UT ) with a Family Tree printed on it, but only 3 generations I think. IF somebody doesnt have a Michaels close to them, and would like to see it. let me know, I'll make a trip and scan and send you a copy and if you approve, Ill buy more and send to you at your cost. ( OR trade for Pivo* ! ) Scrapbook stores are popping up all over, I would check with them too, also Art supply stores, paper, poster paper/board / large binders.... Marsha - My Family Tree Maker has a "page ruler" which indicates that my tree, with all its twists and turns, if I were to include the whole thing, would use about 12 sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper! So you see I can identify with your problem. However, I did have one thought in that regard. In my area there are certain office supply stores that have copiers which make poster-sized copies. This might be one way for both of us. What do you think? Kim Dugan Like to shop? Check out my e-store for family friendly products! http://kimmiescorner.com/

Judi, I use The Master Genealogist program and am very happy with it. The latest family tree I have is printed on 36" wide paper and is about 6 feet high. It has 12 generations (including myself) and room for about four more if I should ever find them! I am fortunate enough to have access to a 36" wide plotter at work, but you can cut and paste together the output from 8.5x11 as I used to do. I suppose there can be too much of a good thing. If I ever find the ancestors of my great grandfather Josef Trnka, great grandmother Antonia Sarnek or other major brick walls it will push the chart down a couple of more feet! I think I could deal with that. Dave
Dear Judi, I have never regretted buying Family Tree Maker for my computer. I have close to 250 people in my database. There are many other programs available, like Prodegy, and Rootsmagic to name 2. You of course need a computer and have to back up your data to floppy or C D regularly. Family Tree Maker (FTM) is one of the better genealogy programs out there. I've been using it myself for a number of years, and it's been mostly pleasant experience. Later versions (I have ver.11) allow for output to PDF files which you can copy to a disk and take to a local print shop to have a beautifully printed tree on a large page. I've got mine printed at Kinko's for a few bucks; black and white, roughly 50x20 inches. One caveat - if you use non-English alphabet in your tree (e.g. names, places), FTM does not handle the output to PDF file correctly. There is a way around it, however, using third party PDF printer drivers. If your family tree contains just English names (or you decide not to use foreign characters and supplement them with English alphabet equivalents), you should be fine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alice Wolfe" <alice.wolfe@worldnet.att.net> To: <CZECH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2004 5:03 PM Subject: Re: [CZ] family tree on paper > Dear Judi, > > I have never regretted buying Family Tree Maker for my computer. I'm glad JuDi asked the question. Mine to is large and will be waiting for some more answers to come.. C&C
My software program will print a several pages family tree. You have to end up taping it all together, cuz it wont work any other way, Unless you just tape each piece on the wall the way you want it. I dont have any on the wall cuz there's not enough space on my wall LOL ----- Original Message ----- From: JuDi To: CZECH-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, March 18, 2004 2:55 PM Subject: [CZ] family tree on paper My tree is getting large enough that an 8x11" piece of paper won't do.
