    3. If coming through Iowa, stop in Cedar Rapids as there are a couple in the Czech Village near the Czech Museum. The village has a bakery with all the goodies and the butcher shop still sells homemade head cheese. There is also a gift shop with imports of crystal, glass Christmas decorations and the blood stones (garnets) besides other items. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Mlejnek" <rvmlejnek@navix.net> To: <CZECH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 22, 2004 8:25 PM Subject: Re: [CZ] Bohemian restaurants > Denise, > > Where are you starting from? > > If going through Omaha, NE, try out the Bohemian Cafe. 1. [CZ] Scanning images (was: family tree on paper)
    2. I think it's almost universal to get scanned files that don't have enough detail. I don't know whether people scan to small files intentionally because they don't want big files on their disks or in email, or whether it is unfamiliarity with the scanners and software, but I get images all of the time that don't have enough pixels to make a nice clear image. I create my own scan files at 300dpi with the dimensions of the original document (though sometimes I'll enlarge or reduce somewhat to fill out a printed letter-sized page), and save as a high-quality JPEG (not highest or maximum, that's typically unnecessary and wasteful of disk space). JPEG format is important (not TIFF, not PNG, not GIF) because it is very standard and it allows significant compression (smaller files) without affecting perceived quality. Remember, the most important thing about an image file affecting detail is the Number Of Pixels, NOT the resolution (in dots per inch / dpi) or dimensions (in inches). A page sized 300dpi scan yields JPEG files of from less than 100KB (simple line art or grayscale images) up to maybe as high as 2MB (complex color image). You can then always make a smaller version if desired, but you have a high fidelity copy in your digital archive. I doubt anyone with a cable modem, DSL, or other broadband would mind receiving such clear image. Ask about file size if you're not sure what the recipient wants or can handle. 1. [CZ] SHEMUSKA / 1880 / Republic County, Kansas
    2. Mary Boyd
    3. I am still looking for Bohemians Frank and Winnie SCHIMBERSKY/SIMBERSKY (and their descendants) who were married in Johnson County, Iowa in 1871. I have been searching for this couple in subsequent censuses and haven't found this surname (or a myriad of variations) in Iowa or any of the surrounding states. However, in the 1880 federal census index, I found the following individuals which bear a lot of similarities to the family I'm looking for: Kansas, Republic County, Farmington Township Frank SHEMUSKA, Head, 32, born Bohemia, parents born Bohema Minny SHEMUSKA, Wife, 36, born Bohemia, parents born Bohemia Frank SHEMUSKA, Son, 7, born IA Wensil SHEMUSKA, Son, 5, born IA Edward SHEMUSKA, Son, 3, born IA Mary SHEMUSKA, Daughter, 1, born IA Unfortunately, I don't have access to the census images for this year. I'd appreciate it if someone that has access to the 1880 census images could take a look at the entries and tell me whether the image is pretty clear or whether there might be some alternate spellings for this family name. Also, if anyone here has any ideas on finding census entries after 1880 for this family, or recognizes this family in Kansas, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks much, Mary

    3. Hi Listers, This is somewhat "off topic", but the business name of Kinkos was mentioned. I have a cousin who lives in a distant state and she owns a scanner. The only problem is that she does not know how to use it and when she sends images, they are all too small. I have already been the route of trying to teach her how to use it, but now she thinks I am too particular and a nut case to boot! She will not send me the originals either!! Anyway, has anyone used a commercial service to scan images? Another cousin suggested that I send her a gift certificate to Kinkos, but the closest one to me is 100 miles away. I have no idea how far the closest one is to where she lives. Anyone ever have a similar problem and a possible solution? 3. I believe Kinko's (or a similar outfit) is the way to go. As long as you can save your family tree in one of the common file formats (pdf, jpg, etc..), they can print it for you. Most, if not all, of their centers do have plotters that are capable of printing on large-paper format. You can either bring the file for printing on a diskette/CD to your local shop or even order the printing online. I would recommend checking with Kinko's customer service about the exact options and cost available to you. I used them and now have my family tree printed on one big piece of paper and I am quite happy with it. Kinko's pages are at http://www.kinkos.com/help/contact_us.php Honza ----- Original Message ----- From: <Hcounter@aol.com> To: <CZECH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 23, 2004 9:05 AM Subject: Re: [CZ] family tree on paper > In a message dated 3/23/04 10:52:52 AM Central Standard Time, > djanca@worldnet.att.net writes: > > > > Can't you just take your disk to a Kinko's or other copy place and have > > it done on their large format printers?
