One thing you will want to consider is that there are crowds of tourists everywhere in August. Also, if it is hot and it usually is in August, there isn't much air conditioning in a lot of the smaller hotels and in the cars, if you are renting one. Not sure about buses as I have never ridden buses there. Prague is so congested that time of year, as it is most of the summer, that it is hard to get around down town. Year before last, we went in May/June and it was unreal even then. There were so many guides with their flag poles and there 20 or more people following that we couldn't believe it. We watched from the Intercontinental Hotel while we were having breakfast in their coffee shop that looks out on the street to the Old Town ,and amused ourselves for a couple of hours watching. But, later when we tried to get over to see the Astronomical Clock it wasn't so funny as it was impossible to get near enough to take a picture. It was elbow to elbow with people. We found Brno pretty quiet after that so if you are going there it is fine. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in the Trade Center and really enjoyed it. They had a reasonable rate and the restaurant was exceptionally good. Large buffet breakfast in the morning. If you want to stay near the City Hall and across from the Castle, there is a hotel right there where we always parked when we went downtown. I believe it was called International Hotel. they had an ATM machine in their lobby and a good restaurant. If you are staying in small hotels... ask about air conditioning....also, you may be carrying your luggage up 3 flights of stairs as some don't have elevators The small hotels and B & B's are fun for local culture and food, but you have to be prepared for those little discomforts....some are worth it. We've spent some time in Telc and loved it. Also, Cesky Budohvice (sp). Hotel Zvon is great there. email me for more info on those places and I'll look up more about them. IF you are going to Karlovy Vary , well, again its going to be crowded, but its a very beautiful place.. Millie researching Herink,Stepan,Novotny,VAsik.
I agree. May and September are the best months. That is why I picked May for the Genealogy/Cultural Tour and September for the Grand Tour (Weber Travel). Plus May is the month they have the Ride of Kings Festival (best festival in the CR). August seems to be a bit crowded and warm. Then again a vacation is what you make of it. Crowds and weather should have very little impact, if your mind set is right. Joe > I have been told that May and September are great months. > > Own experience I went on Sept 21 and returned Oct 22. I have been told that May and September are great months. Own experience I went on Sept 21 and returned Oct 22. I had a great time, weather was nice, but cool later part of Oct. but again nice. I could not have picked a better time as far as travel is concerned. I did not see big crowds, even in Prague, tourist were at a minimum. Next time hopefully in May 2005 I can go again. Everyone in Europe is on vacation in August. Would some kind person please look up the following information for me. I found some sketchy information on an ancestry web site regarding these two surnames and I need to know a little bit more (if the information is there). In volume 9, p. 84 there should be a listing for Maria Kos, age 19 and Anna Kos, age 5. Were they alone or were there other members of the family with them? What was the date and ship name? All I have is 1880. Any other information there? In Volume 5, p. 78 there should be a listing for a Franz Kostchranz. What other information does it give? Any other family members? This is a long shot--my great-grandfather's surname was Kostohryz and I'm hoping this might be him with a misspelling. Many thanks, Joanne
Hey list! I am in the process of planning a trip to the Czech Republic (southeastern Moravia) in late August and have heard from a couple of sources that this is a bad time to travel because everyone is on vacation. What are your experiences, thoughts, recommendations, etc.....? Look forward to hearing from any and all of you! Regards, Jesse Clarke chaos@gwtc.net
Does anyone know of a site where I can access email addresses in the Czech Republic? Thanks. Janice

I can only tell you of our experience. Because there was a string of nearly a dozen relatives, there has always been someone in the family or the villages that could read English. Most are glad for the opportunity to practice English. Once you established the regular post then you can ask if they or someone they know has access to a computer. It is worth writing to the mayor in the smaller towns to see if someone knows English Hope this helps
Can someone please tell me how to email people in the Czech Republic. I found some of my Praveceks and Sladkys and would like to email them to see if they are related to me. Also, I don't know Czech, would they be able to read English? Thank you. Janice in AZ

The suggestion is that if you want a very large family tree to display on your wall , try taking your papers to the company that does the blueprinting for construction companies. When and where I get my papers together, would contact one of the blue printing offices . Not certain that they do such things as a family tree, but there is no limit as to the size they might make for you! Vera NV ===8<===========End of original message text===========

My heartfelt thanks to everyone that has sent suggestions and offered insights into possible further research on this family as well as observations about the quality and characteristics of the census image. Without your help, I'd have hit the brick wall long ago. You're all just AMAZING. Mary
I will also endorse Jaroslav Fiala for Czech research. He recently found two more Sladek generations that took my line back to about 1612. He is a very conscientious and diligent researcher. The downside right now, though, for *any* research in Czech Republic is the unfavorable dollar exchange rate. Jim Sladek -------- Original Message -------- I would second Jaroslav as I have used and am using him and find him great. Best I am going to the Czech Republic this year in your fall and plan to meet up with him then. Mary, Regarding the Shemuska's, I checked the 1920 census index and found some things that might help: Frank A Shumack Age: 48 years Estimated birth year: 1871 Birthplace: Iowa Race: White Home in 1920: Marion, Linn, Iowa Roll: T625_499 Page: 3B ED: 104 Image: 1070 He was the only one the right age born in Iowa with soundex for Shemuska. Interestingly, father born Austria, mother born Bohemia. He might have Americanized his name. Wife Lucia age 43 or 45, born Iowa, parents born Iowa. Name: Wenzl Shimek Age: 42 years Estimated birth year: 1877 Birthplace: Iowa Race: White Home in 1920: Saratoga, Howard, Iowa Roll: T625_494 Page: 9A ED: 135 Image: 0829 With Mary, Gertrude, Gabrielle and Paul 35, 16, 12?, 9 11/12 respectively. Living next door to Thomas Shimek with Stasie, Louis, Adolph, Frank, Susan, Julius. Wenzl, Mary, and Thomas all born Iowa with all parents born Bohemia. This was the only one with name Wen* in Shemuska soundex born Iowa. He is also the right age. Name: Edward M Schmich Age: 42 years Estimated birth year: 1877 Birthplace: Iowa Race: White Home in 1920: Richland, Dickinson, Iowa Roll: T625_486 Page: 1A ED: 249 Image: 1054 His family is Mary, Louise, Michael. Father born NY, mother b. Germany. He is the only one the right age but there weren't very many- about 10-15 total with Shemuska soundex. Regarding your Simbersky name I found this guy: Joe Schwimbroski Age: 69 years Estimated birth year: 1850 Birthplace: Bohemia Race: White Home in 1920: Limestone, Peoria, Illinois Roll: T625_398 Page: 9B ED: 56 Image: 0859 Not much else that was very obvious. There were 54 total born in Bohemia with Sch/Simbersky soundex. None in Kansas. Cassandra

Mary--- Subsequent search was negative. The family you cite was not on census for Farmington by 1900. Sorry and god luck! Hi Mary, Checked the image and it is very clear. Checked for the family in Iowa with no results. However, since the 1890 census was lost and the 1900 and 1910 censuses are not indexed, it would require doing those censuses oneself, finding the county, twp., etc. and scanning for the names. Will check one other source and get back to you. That is almost exactly the opposite of what most people do. I have received gargantuan image files from people who were not used to scanning. I think most scanners save in a large size to maintain good imagery. So, I am going to take a stab that your cousin is using XP and that she is saying yes when XP asks if she wants to send a smaller image. The smaller image is useless for reading scanned writing. I suppose it might be okay for pictures. But those items will not enlarge properly on your computer. Ask about the XP. If so, tell her not to use the option and to send them in the size scanned.
