    3. Hello Woody, Have you already explored the St. Albans Lists for immigrants who entered through Canada? They are on film at NARA and can be rented for a small fee. A couple of good sites for learning about this: http://uscis.gov/graphics/aboutus/history/poelist/CAN2.htm and http://www.webbitt.com/volga/border.htm Good Luck Sandy ----- Original Message ----- From: Woody Minar Sent: Monday, March 29, 2004 11:18 AM To: CZECH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CZ] Passenger Lists VERY GOOD QUESTION! However, my father's parents (Ludwig Mynarz and Anna Dzik) who came from Horni Terlicko, Czechoslovakia are believed to have come via Nova Scotia then on to Phillips, Wisconsin. 3. Hi Millie, There is a great article by Karel Kysilka that goes into detail about requirements for Bohemian emigration. It indicates the process and legal channels necessary, including where persons had to make application. He also states that many left illegally due to the requirements and/or lack of knowledge of the process. It can be found at http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/durer/23/emigration/emigration.htm Sandy ----- Original Message ----- From: Mrbkdb112@cs.com Sent: Monday, March 29, 2004 1:54 PM To: CZECH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CZ] Passenger Lists Woody, that tells me I have a lot more avenues to sesrch. They could have landed anywhere. I don't even know if they started from Bremen, but I think that might have been the closest from Pilsen. They might have gone from Hamburg. Well, I'll keep trying. My search for my Mother's parents was so easy as they came in 1893 and I found them listed on the Ellis Island web site right away. I just needed to convert Joe to Josef (not Joseph) and Frank to Frantisek. If anyone knows about applications to emigrate in Bohemia, let me know. 1. Re: [CZ] Passenger Lists
    2. Thanks, Cassandra. I have tried 1868 - 9. I can't confirm the dates as Iowa didn't do birth records that early. I only have word of mouth that they came in 1867. They were here in 1870 on the census. These people were so bad with dates that none of their ages on the later census agree, and their death certificates are not the same, even the tomb stone is different. so, I could be way off on when they came here. The records are much more accurate in the Cz Rep so I'm going to try the Archives in Pilsen. It takes 6 months to hear back from them but I don't have any other ideas. 3. Jeff, I know for sure that my ggrandmother crossed over with two infants, but I'm puzzled as to why I can't find an Anastasia Pivonka on the passenger lists with two infants, James and Josef. I'm beginning to think that her name was mispelled. Will just have to keep searching for her !

    2. Cassandra Hanson
    3. Millie, Many of my immigrants lied about when they came over. The longer they were here, the earlier they came. They wanted to be as "American" as possible. Perhaps the reason you can't find your immigrants in 1867 is because they weren't here? If you find them in the 1870 census, maybe you can at least narrow the search to include 1868 and 1869. I think it would be worth a try. I would try to find births of children born here- that narrows the search. Also, if naturalization or declaration papers are available that helps with the dates. But many of my naturalization papers have an "exact" date of arrival and the date is wrong. You would think that such an important day as entering a new world for the first time would be so memorable that one would never forget it, but they did. Hope it helps. 3. Mike, Go to <http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and enter the GERMAN-BOHEMIAN-L list to search. Select 1997 and enter the search term "voyage". You'll find a post with the subject line "steerage history". Looking at that message, apparently the answer may be in the CGSI newsletter Nase Rodina of September, 1995 if you can find someone who has it. 2. Jeff's Mail
    3. Mike, I have a copy of an 1861 advertisement from the North German Lloyd line that shows the schedule between Bremen (via Southampton) to New York City. The crossing appears to have taken exactly four weeks. I'm not certain whether the time would have been reduced by 1884; the ships in 1861 were steamers at that time also. The advertisement also shows prices. The cost of passage from Bremen to New York City was $112.50 for first-class cabin, $75 for second-class cabin, and $45 for steerage. Most of our ancestors probably traveled steerage. "These prices have to be paid in gold or its equivalent in current funds," according to the ad.
