    3. Please, I know this is not related to the list topics, but I am having problems sending e-mails with attachments using Outlook and Outlook Express. The mail tries to send, but then stops with errors. Deleting from outbox does not delete it from continuing to try and send. Is this a problem with Microsoft Security Updates for Office and Outlook, etc.? Appreciate any help. And I apologies for asking for this on this list. dondra30@bellsouth.net

Ron, I did not know you could purchase the film from the FHC -- at least my local FHC says I cannot. What I have done is to renew the film two more times so that they will stay on an "indefinite" basis for anyone to use. I currently have 7 rolls from Ryglice, Poland, and some surrounding towns. I also have some other information (not Church records) for my uncle's birthplace in Yugoslavia!!! In addition, I have purchased the fiche for the IL birth and death indexes -- cannot remember exactly how many I have but 153 or thereabouts comes to mind. I have not looked at these indexes in quite a while. Lorraine

    3. Perhaps this might offend some, but why not just purchase the film and donate it to your local FHC? I have done this on a number of occasions and that way others can benefit from your contribution. After all, the FHC resource is available for free and the volunteers working there enjoy having more to offer the local patrons. Just a suggestion because it might cut down some of the delays listers are concerned about. Ron Mlejnek.

    3. I had no trouble ordering Baltimore passenger lists from my local Family History Center. I recently ordered Film # 417414 (5/15/1880 thru 12/22/1880) and #417420 (9/8/1883 thru 5/31/1884) and they arrived in about 2 weeks. I would double-check your numbers against the actual numbers they ordered. Maybe they made a mistake. Joanne

They lived in Niobrera, Knox County, Nebraska from 1887 to 1942. I believe John was married before but don't know to whom. 2. Judy, There are a number of experts in reading that old handwriting. I've struggled through writing over 200 years old. What I found is the stuff between about 1800 and 1850 is unbelievably difficult. Sometimes you have to resort to tricks to find the docs even though there are indecies that, hopefully, are easier to read. The Genealogy and Heraldry society in Praha has published books that show the alphabet in script, both small and capital letters, for each 10 years of the 19th century - and then some! I've not got the book, but I know someone there who does. Unfortunately, it is also in Czech, so doesn't help more than just 'looking at the pictures'. You might try getting alphabetic pages with current letters and old German letters, including the Gothic versions. I know they helped me immensely when I was trying to figure out what the letters represented. There are also books to show you how to decipher the letters and words - I lucked out on finding some at a thrift shop that obviously had belonged at one time to a genealogist - and the family donated them in bulk to get rid of them..... 3. I'm a volunteer with LDS FHC and this is what I was told by our director the other day. --- They will be keeping information on microfilm because film lasts longer than CD, DVD or other media. Plans are to most of the microfilms online for viewing, so ordering films will not be necessary. This will be done in the near future and in steps. As to the "number" of copies of microfilm. I was told it is based on the popularity and number of requests for the film. If you are experiencing an exceptionally long period waiting to receive your film, have the FHC you ordered from, trace your order. If your order is still "pending", ask the FHC staff to request Salt Lake to make "new" copy of the film. This is often done with "damaged" film, lost film, and not enough copies of the film. Salt Lake will determine if making additional copies of the film is necessary or finding another copy from another HFC to fill the order. I was able to receive film copy of the Ship Manifest from the FHC within the normal waiting period, in my case - 3 weeks. My great grand parents had come from SW Bohemia (Radkowitz - Kadkovice) in May 1867 from Brehem to Baltimore on the Bark Capella. 3. Something doesn't sound right here. I'm certainly not an expert on LDS processes, but I would be very surprised if they only had one microfilm of the passenger list. If that be the case, there is also the option of getting NARA films through your local library. I received some passenger list films through the library and about the only difference from LDS is that shipping had to be paid in addition to the rental fee and the wait time was a little longer then through the FHC. 1. [CZ] Liverpool to Chicago.
    2. Frank Soural
    3. There were two steamship lines that served the transatlatic route between Liverpool and north America in that year (1869). Both carried mail and immigrants. One was the ALLAN Line and the other the INMAN line. However, the "St Laurence Seaway" was not opened until a hundred years later in the late 1950's and was officially opened by President Eisehower, I believe in 1959. I lived in Montreal at the time and know that transatlantic ships would not go beyond the Lachine Rapids in the St Laurence, near Montreal. The only way that they could have reached Chicago from Montreal is overland, by train or coach. However, both of the above lines dropped anchor at the three (19th Century) eastern canadian immigration ports of Halifax, Quebec City and Montreal. Both lines provided scheduled sail and later steamer service from Liverpool to eastern Canada and then on to Boston, New York and Baltimore. The Canadian Archives has ships manifests on microfilm that may be borrowed. But you have to know the details of the voyage, for example, month of departure in Liverpool or the month of arrival at a canadian port and If possible the name of the ship. I suspect that, as an alternateroute, they may have gone from Liverpool to NYC and up the Erie Canal to Cleveland (which I believe existed at the time) and then overland to Chicago or directly by rail from New York to Chicago. Do you have details on your family's transatlantic voyage. You may have to work the dates backwards from their arrival in Chicago, if that is at all possible. The other thing that is sometimes helpful is anecdotal information that survived in family lore, such as a death during the voyage or ship mishaps like broken rudder or broken propeller shaft which happened frequently. These events are sometimes recorded in the local newspapers and help in pinpointing the name of the ship. The archives here have copies of the Halifax, Quebec and Montreal newspapers of the period, which can be consulted. Frank Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Frank Soural qlt@cyberus.ca

    3. Barb, My paternal grandparents were born in Nyrany, (western Bohemian) and left there in June, 1904, crossing the ocean for arrival in Baltimore on June 30, 1904. The vessel was the SS Brandenburg. This may have been the same vessel that transported your grandparents. Mine settled in Cleveland, Ohio. The departure port was Bremen, Germany.
