I have VIII for Baltimore 1834-1879 and will gladly do a look-up. I don't always jump in if someone has a general request to the list, but if you don't get a response, email me directly and I'll look up your name(s) for you. I don't think you'd call these books indexed, but rather the entire book is arranged in alphabetically order by surname so an index really isn't necessary. What you really don't know from this book is if there was someone else from the same place on the same ship and for this is is better to look up individual ships records on microfilm - might fight a mother-in-law or "cousin" traveling with your relatives that way but would be missed in the Baca books. I've checked most of Baca's volumes and they have the same format. Ken Chromy
Do we still have all Baca books available among subscribers? Would the owners check in (if they are still willing to do lookups)? Are the Baltimore books indexed? For that matter, are all books indexed? Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume VIII Baltimore 1834-1879 Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume IX Baltimore 1880-1899 For those who are unaware of the Baca books, see http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/texasczech/References/Leo%20Baca.htm Elaine
Hello We regularly send mail and our postmaster insists that the full name, "Czech Republic" be on the envelope. There is usually someone in the village who is fluent in English and most are willing to translate for the neighbors. At least this has been our experience. Ramona Polivka
Hi List, I hope someone can help me with this problem. On a website I found the address of possible relatives in the Czech Republic. My grandfather came from a small village and I found two people with that surname living in that village today. There is a chance they could be grandchildren of one of my grandfather's brothers. I would like to try writing a simple letter to them. I have their name and address which is "Hvozdec ##". Is that enough of an address? If I just write Czech Republic on the last line of the envelope, is that enough to get the letter to them? Also, I don't know Czech. If I write the letter in English, what do you think are my chances of having them find someone who can translate? Joanne

I am searching for any descendant of Jean Sage who wrote a family history book about Joseph and Antonia Soukup, and their family, Anna,Mary,Frances, Emma,Rose,John,Matilda,Bessie and Joseph. She wrote the book in 1977 and it is in the Washington Library, Iowa. Jean Sage lived in Solon,Iowa at the time she wrote the book. I would like to hear from any descendant, or anybody that has any information about them. Millie, researching Herink,Soukup,Svolba,Cherny

Well, I had to throw in the weather report too. ; ) I have the history book of Broumy and it tells all. It names all the citizens and military personnel, land they owned, etc. It was worth every penny. Just wanted to let everybody know maybe in the next few years, all the villages books will be ready and we can get new leads. As many of you already know, I will be going in September, so if there is a village book you would be interested in email me. Thanks, Jitka Vondrova
Just a recap on what I'm doing and where I'm going: September 15, 2004 my cousin Linda Skalicky and I are going to the Old Country. We will visit the countryside, churches, mayor's offices ( where the books are sold) , etc. I will also be speaking at a Heritage Conference and meeting the Ambassador. ; ) There will be lots of people at this Conference for which I will mention many if not all of our ( ya'lls) surnames. I will also have these emails you have sent lying around for all to see. I will be talking to many many people in many counties/ villages. I'm not going shopping or sightseeing. I am going to talk, talk, talk. Somewhere along the way, if I happen to meet a man named Marek, Mikeska or Pustejovsky, I will think of this group and wish I had ya'lls information. This is why I have asked anybody interested to send me their info. I am not sure of all the places we will be going but if I happen to be visiting your village and 1. if they have a history book 2. I have the money, I will pick you up a history book, maybe find something out for you, find somebody with your last name or leave your info behind. While out for lunch today, we pulled out our map (bought over there) and started to highlight some of the places we are going. Some of the places so far are: Ceske Budejovice, Ceske Krumlov, Zadervice, Beroun Broumy, Rokcany, Paradubice, Vysoke Myto, Petrovice and Kuncice, etc. As far as what village books are available? I do know that for my 4 or 5 villages, there are books available now. I dont know yet of all the available villages. I would suggest contacting the mayor's office of your area. I dont remember the cost for the books I have bought. If they were under $100 they would be well worth it to me just to have the book of our village. You can look your village up on the internet and contact the mayor that way or go to www.seznam.cz and search for your village and maybe even history books. I will be in contact to those of you who are interested in the books. As far as the emails you sent today, they will be used on the trip. Thanks to all that sent their info. I love to find new hits, even if it is for somebody else. Thanks again, Jitka = Judy P.S. I'm also going to the Lichnov Museum dedicated to the Czechs that moved to Texas. Possibly your emails can be left there if there were no other leads on your surname. So, keep those emails coming.
Hi Gordon, No connections to the names you mentioned. My Bohemian ancestors are Bilek, Nadada, and Wolf, as stated on American documents. I have no idea if they spelled them different back in the mid 1800's when they were born. I sure would love to find out the village name. Ceske Budejovice was mentioned on their obits, which were in Bohemian. Enjoy your visit this summer. I am going to Chicago in June, and will be visiting the Bohemian National Cemetery where their ashes are contained. I may have to hire someone in Czech Republic to search records for me.
