    3. Janice, I do not know specifically what might be wrong because I do not use Rodclan website. However, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to do things because of security concerns. Generally, remote websites, at a minimum, will put a "cookie' on your machine. That way when you visit again, they can "track" your activity. Some sites require "popups" to be enabled. Some sites might be blocked by your own firewall (if you have one enabled under XP) or antivirus software. To check these out, use a different browser, if you have one. I have 3 versions of Netscape, and one version of Opera and Internet Explorer. Usually the remote site will tell you to switch security settings or browsers (Internet Explorer is the default), but a novice website may not even know their own settings because they are on a "free" server with tons of ads. Just in case. Ron Mlejnek At 12:50 PM 05/04/2004, you wrote: >I seem to be having problems registering in this website. I tried yesterday >and today. 3. The site is working, I did just log in. Try the procedure described below again. Elaine *************** Subject: [CZ] Registration at Rodclan website ===8<==============Original message text=============== Honza, Your instructions are terrific, and I did add my paternal surname with a district. My poor maternal surname has no identifying geographical area, not certain what kind of response that will bring, but I figured I would take advantage of your website and stick her surname out there. Thank you for making it easy to enter the information. I hope the subscribers will use these instructions and handle their own registration. We must learn to do these things if we are going to be successful in our continuing quest for family information. I am retaining your post in case anyone missed the full set of instructions for registering surnames at http://www.rodclan.cz Elaine Hello Honza On Thursday, February 12, 2004, you wrote > Sure. 3. Hi, Janice in AZ. The names you cite are all from the base name: Sladky. The variation is due to gender and language usage. As to you other issue, if all the names were spelled the same, namely Sladky, could you assume they were all of he same family? I doubt it. I suspect Sladky is a fairly common name. There is a list available telling with what frequency the name appears in the CR. Joe

    3. Darla, the Czech list's database is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~elainetmaddox/ Click on surnames there (scroll down, left side) and add your names. The Rod&Clan database is at http://www.rodclan.cz/index.php It will be necessary to follow Honza's guidelines if you are not a Czech speaker. I was able to add my surnames with the help of Honza's post. Elaine If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something. --Steven Wright Hello Fred On Sunday, May 2, 2004, you wrote > Would it be possible to add the names of my Great-Grand parents. 3. This is a forwarded message From: Honza Uher <juher@san.rr.com> To: <CZECH-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, February 12, 2004, 4:19:20 AM Subject: [CZ] Registration at Rodclan website ===8<==============Original message text=============== Sure. Below are basic guidelines that should help anyone get registered and add surnames to the database. They may appear a bit lengthy, but I just tried to list step-by-step instructions to make it as easy as possible. 1) From the main page http://www.rodclan.cz click on "registrace" (or simply click on this link http://www.rodclan.cz/?module=register) to go to the registration page. 2) Enter the required information Email - your email address where others can contact you Jméno - Your first name Príjmení - Your last name Web - your genealogical web pages (if you have any, otherwise leave blank) Ano, chci odebírat Emailový mesícník (if you select this checkbox, you will automatically receive via email a list of surnames added to the database each month) 3) Click on the Zaregistrovat button 4) If you entered correct information (we try to validate email), you should see the message below. It says that your registration was successful and you shall receive password via email. If you see anything else, your registration was not completed successfully, most likely because you entered invalid email. Vase registrace probehla úspesne. Za okamzik vám emailem posleme heslo, které budete moci pouzít pro prihlásení na vás úcet. Pokud byste do 24 hodin tuto email nedostali, napiste nám do redakce a my registraci proveríme. 5) Upon receiving email from Rod & Clan with subject Rod & Clan - registrace, you have your password. It is a six-character string on the third line by itself (see sample message below with xxxxxx). Dobrý den, gratulujeme vám k úspesné registraci na genealogických stránkách Rod a Clan. Vase uzivatelské heslo je: xxxxxx 6) Go back to http://www.rodclan.cz and login by entering your email and password into the fields on the top left side (Email: and Heslo:) and hitting Enter or clicking on the blue arrow. Be careful to enter your password correctly - some pesky characters like number zero/letter O or number one/lowercase L can look similar. The best bet is to copy and paste the password from the email you received. 7) Once you are logged in, you should see a frame titled "Moje Data - Výpis vasich predku". This is a list of your surnames in the database (so far empty). If you don't see this title, login was not successful - most likely because you entered incorrect email or password. 8) Assuming you are logged in, you have four links on the left-side panel. They do the following: moje data - displays your surnames kontaktni udaje - displays your contact information (name, email, web) and also allows you to change password pridat prijmeni - this lets you ADD SURNAMES to the database odhlasit - logout 9) So lets add some surnames. Click on the "pridat prijmeni" link. It brings up a form asking for three pieces of information: Prijmeni - surname Obec - place (village/town) Oblast - region (this is a drop-down list with Czech regions. If you are unsure what region to use, simply leave this field at the default setting "Jina oblast" which means other region). If you want to find out the region, there are good reference pages with Czech regions and cities at http://mesta.obce.cz/ With all information entered, click on the button "Pridat udaje" which will add the surname to the database. 10) If you did everything right, you should be looking at the page with your surnames and the one you just entered should be listed there. You can add more surnames following the same steps. 11) You can also edit or delete your existing surnames simply by clicking on the green links on the left side of your existing surnames. "UPRAVIT" means edit and "SMAZAT" means delete (to delete it you have to click on SMAZAT and then confirm deletion on the next page by clicking on another SMAZAT again). 12) Just to make sure your names are listed, click on "nova prijmeni" on the main page which lists names added in the past 30 days. Yours should be listed there. By clicking on the surname you should be able to invoke an email to be sent to your address. Also if you entered your genealogical web site during the registration, there will be a blue "W" icon next to the surname. Clicking on it will open your web pages. This is a nice feature as you can either opt to send email to someone or browse their web pages with their family information. If you got stuck along the way or are simply afraid to try, send me an email with your surnames and contact info and I will add it to the database. We purposely designed the database to be self-sufficient to limit our overhead, but I realize that the language barrier poses a challenge to some. Hope this helps, Honza ----- Original Message ----- From: "ETM" <Chook@starpower.net> To: <CZECH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 11, 2004 10:25 PM Subject: [CZ] Registration at Rodclan website > Honza, > > I made a failed attempt to register so I could list my email > address and surnames. 2. Janice Solorio
    3. Hi Listers, I have a question about Czech surnames and it's dirivitives. I was looking on the Denni Hlasatel CD for obits. The surname I am searching right now is Sladky. I found 15 with that spelling. But then I found 2 Sladka, 11 Sladkova and 2 Sladkovou. Do I assume these are all the same family? I realize the spelling changes with male and female, but I'm confused now with all this. If someone could please help me out with this, I'd appreciate it. Could all these be in my family? Thank you.
