    3. Thanks, Susan, for your interest and response. I take the train into NYC fromCT...about 90 minutes. Thanks for the info on the Sokol and Jiri. I will pursue those aspects. I simply called the pastor to ask her about the baptism certs, marriage certs and she told me of all the documents that are stuffed in various cabinets, closets etc. (the safe was apparently stoled about 30 years ago which contained most of these documents) So, myself and another Cz-lister, met at the church last week. We managed to organize one closet. The church is in desperate need of funds so we are putting aside stuff that we think can be tag-saled etc. For example, there are boxes of props that (apparently) were used in various productions that took place there. We are hoping to be in touch with the original church members in order to shed light on these productions and to identify people that are in the many BOXES of unlabeled pix. thanks for the info and the interest. judi clinton, CT PS Wouldn' t it be great to find out where the safe went?

    3. Listers, I'm stumpted again. I received a reply from the library in LaCrosse, WI on the search for the naturalization papers on Henry and Marii Pravecek. They don't have any record and said they kept poor records in those days, but they were probably naturalized. Where would I go now to find these records? Any ideas? This was about 1892. Thank you for all your help. Janice in AZ

    3. I just thought that those on the list who are interested in Vincent Pisek would be interested in the following information: I found him in the 1910 census living at 339 E. 74th St. There is a notation next to his address which might mean he was living in a basement apartment. In 1910 he was single, age 51. He arrived in US in 1870 and is listed as a clergyman and pastor. Living at that address was the Joseph Stier family with wife, Mary and children Annie, Joseph, Jr., Rudolph and Caroline. Also another woman named Mary Dvorak. Just a little piece of Czech history. 3. Judy - How sad that we (all of us) don't ask questions until there is no one around who can answer them. To have all that information and no idea of what it really is must be extremely frustrating. I have about a dozen pictures which are "my mystery". Have you considered contacting other organizations (Czech) in that area for any suggestions or information. My first thought was the Sokol which is located at 420-424 E. 71st St. It was a center for Czech cultural and life in the early 1900's and earlier - you probably know that already. Some people to contact there would be Beatrice Cihak or Ed Chlanda. Here is a phone number that appeared on one of Sokol letter heads I received: 212-861-8206 Some time in 2002 they were fortunate enough to have a graduate from the School of Arts at Charles University and a recipient of an award from the Czech Archives Society. His name is Jiri Vichta and is an employee of the State Regional Archives in Praha. He spent three months at the Sokol helping them. I just thought they might have some suggestions for you. The Library Committe of the Sokol meets most Wednesday evenings at 7 P.M. except July and August. I have not been able to visit -- I really wish I lived close enough to be able to drop in and visit -- even volunteer. Good luck with your project. How are you managing to volunteer? Do you make visits to the city and stay there or with friends. Just trying to figure out a way to get involved myself. Take care. Susan

    3. Units of area, volume, length and currency in the Czech lands were different, not only in various time periods, but even in the various regions. Example: 1 guilder = 30 kreutzer (Bohemia) 1 guilder = 33 kreutzer (Silesia) Conventional currency (1750-1857) 1 Tolar (Thaler) = 2 guilders 1 Tolar (Thaler) = 20 grosch 1 Tolar (Thaler) = 60 kreutzer Austrian currency (1857-1892) 100 Conv. guilders = 105 Austrian guilders Crown currency (1892 -1918) 1 Austrian guilder = 2 crowns ----------- I think that in 1803 the "K" could be kreutzer but I read Kreutzer mostly abbreviated as "xr" and never as "K". Could you scan the text and send it to me? Nevertheless 1 guilder=30 kreutzer in this time. 3. I have been privileged to help catalog and organize photos and papers that are literally stuffed into closets and drawers. There are unamed pix of people , seemingly, at shows, plays and concerts at the church. Anyone have any idea what these are about? Supposedly the safe with all the documents of genealogical importance were stolen in the 70's. We hope that it isn't true and will keep looking. Vincent Pisek, the pastor, certainly did a lot of traveling based on his pix. Anyone know about these ventures? judi Clinton, CT

    3. I should add to my message below that one can still browse the surname database, registration is not required for viewing. I might also mention that cookies are not all evil, that I personally do permit some websites to place them on my computer, that some sites won't work without them (Ancestry, New York Times, my bank come to mind) and that what may be true today on any site may not be true tomorrow. Tracking has some legitimate reasons and is not all bad. I love Google and use many of its options. I do allow it to track my surfing habits, it is a small payback for what it gives me free. Google was very up front about tracking. We might all be happier if all sites were as open about it as they. 1. Re: Re: [CZ] Registration at Rodclan website
    2. Either I was not clear or misunderstood. The "security" issues I raised have nothing to do with the subject (Rodclan) web site. They have to do with each persons personal computer and how it is set up for navigating around the Internet. Usually, one cannot visit a website without getting a "cookie". If you look in your "cookie" file, you will find one there after visiting most websites. For example, I just "visited" the CZECH Mail List web site home page and these are the "cookies" that were placed on my machine (after removing all cookies!). Site Cookie Name ancestry.com RMID ancestry.com _3howards_ zedo.com ZEDOIDX zedo.com FFcat zedo.com FFad zedo.com 305,109,15 zedo.com ZEDOIDA zedo.com geo As one "navigates" around the site, the cookies will change or more willl be added. The only way to avoid it is to disconnect your computer from cyberspace. Again, it is how each computer is set up that determines what is put on that computer. If the site doesn't like your settings, it will tell you to change them, or else you will not get full functionality; ie, access to the site.. Sorry about the misinformation. 3. I have not been to Rodclan's website yet, but wanted to comment that any site that makes you accept cookies, popups, etc in order to visit and enter their website, it becomes a "reject" on my part and I move on. If it's a major commercial site, which I rarely go to unless with a definite purpose, I'll note the cookie name and then soon as I'm though, will delete them from my "cookie and tracking histories" (there's usually more that one if you use IE) I enjoy computers and researching through the internet, but there are just to many people lately that are determined to ruin this enjoyment for others, so I've developed a "hard line" on "security tactics and advertising", too. Exception is my subscribed sites. I will try RodClan this evening and if he has that "security" mentioned on his site - I won't be able to view the names submitted.
