    2. Jim, where did Jaroslav Fiala go to research these land records? How much info was on the records? Can I assume that "land records" include houses in the villages or is it farm land? Were occupations listed? Millie

    3. Judi, I can't remember, are you over in the CR? I have access to very little because most everything now requires a professional or a person who has the time to do it and is physically in the CR. I have used Jaroslav Fiala successfully. He's a good man to work with. I have also used the people at http://czechcensus.tripod.com/ and they were very responsive. They are the group which located my family in the church records and were able to send my photocopies of the pages detailing the family. Elaine BEAUTY PARLOR: A place where women curl up and dye. 2. That's what concerned me....that there would not be that much information on it. Have you tried to get "Permission to Leave the Country" documents? I'm thinking that most people didn't bother to apply for them if they were planning on not coming back. Millie

    3. In August of 1999 I asked a professional research company in the CR to, among other things, search for "land records" of my ancestors at a couple of specified village locations. They reported that they conducted the research in the Praha State District Archives, inventories of records of a specific manor. They found, and provided me with copies of, an urbar contract from 1789 and a tax payment record from 1782. I got a translation of the urbar contract, and some historical commentary on such contracts. I received detailed citation of the manor inventory carton numbers and contents label researched. Notes in the reports (I had this company do four different projects for me) said that some types and periods of records for the manor in which my ancestors lived had not been saved. Apparently the keeping of records differed significantly from area to area, and also survival was affected by war as well as other hazards. Records predating the 30 years war, for instance, are apparently quite rare. Some people get luckier than others in their search for archival matter depending partially on where the ancestral village was. 3. Jim suggests this question is too "restrictive". I and others have asked this question before and never received an answer. So.... 1) Are there such things as land records or is this a hoax? 2) How extensive are these records? In other words, do they only include estates and estate owners or do they also include all inhabitants of estates such as peasants? 3) It is indicated that they exist back to 1612. How far back do such records go? 4) Are there regional differences in storage of land records? 5) Where are the storage locations for such records? 6) How can one get access to these records? Or who are the qualified individuals to locate these records? 3. Carl, If you haven't received any answers, perhaps your subject is too restrictive. While not in the North Moravian area, through the use of archive land records, Jaroslav Fiala got my family line (southwest of Prague) back a couple more generations to about 1612. So, for the general question, land records can be quite useful. Can't say a thing about your specific concern of North Moravia. Regards, Jim Sladek Carl Linert wrote: > I will post this message again. 3. One of the researcher that I have worked with hired a Czech researcher to do one. I'm not sure exactly how it was structured but was rather expensive. It didn't add anything significant but did clear up a problem that we had. I 'll check with her to see if she didn't mind if I shared it with you, via email. It is interesting but not as much help as we had hoped. 2. Kutna Hora is located east of Prague. You can take the interstate road #12 to Kolin and branch off there to go to Kutna Hora; or, you can take a secondary road #333 directly to the town. This is a little slower due to passing through many small villages. Kutna Hora is an old silver mining town and now is mostly noted for the location of the famous St. Barbara Cathedral dating from the 14th century and the Church of Bones in Sedlec just east of Kutna Hora. The bones of 40,000 people were resurrected there from their graves by a monk around 1500 who wanted the space to build a chapel. If you go to google and type in Bone Church, Bohemia, you will get the full story and pictures. ITs an interesting area and there is a fairly decent hotel right in the heart of the city center that looks out on the square. There are several other old churches there, too. 3. Hi Judy - I thought it was you -- I am the Susan who is so interested in the Jan Hus church in New York City. I will check at the library when I get there but I think I may already have done that -- seems to me there were no listings in the volume they had but I did request a library loan of another volume. If I find anything I will definitely send it on to you. Will be in touch soon. Susan W.
