    2. These maps are well worth looking at and saving. I find my knowledge of geography is a bit scattered at times ... plus the second page of maps show the boundaries after various treaties, etc. Sort of like a combination geography and history lesson combined. Thanks Elaine. 2. Mike, Thanks for your reply and information. I have made contact with several people in the Czech Republic that were in some way connected to my ancestors from that area. We have emailed back and forth but it sometimes takes a long period of time before I hear back from them after emailing them. I thus figured the reason was the high cost of using the Internet services in the CR. Your information confirmed my suspicions. I really do appreciate your response and hope that others in the CR will find time to comment. Thanks again. Best Regards, Mel Besthorn

    2. Mel writes: I would like to know what it costs for a person in the Czech Republic to  subscribe to the Internet and is it different for email use versus surfing the  Web. ................................... Hi Mel !  Tho I cant answer some of your specifics I can tell you some info. !st, in Czechia, the local phone service is not like in the USA where you pay a monthly fee for all your local calls. Czechs pay per minute of use for all calls!! So the web is expensive for them. Mobile phones are a separate bill too, but reusable cards are mostly used I think. Czech Telecom is the big phone co., dont know if there are other locals, w/ local service, maybe some Czechs ( Listers) , in Czechia, can add to this. There are a lot of Internet Cafes, many in Prague and other cities. There is also tough mobile phone competition and that helps w/ costs. I dont know what monthly service costs, ive always used the Cafes when in the CR, its about 1-2 Kcs per minute, any more and its expensive. The exchange rate now is about 25 Kcs to the $. Hope that helps, Regards, Mike in AZ ( FL for now) SVARC~SWARTZ / CERNY / HAJEK / HOSEK / HRABAC / KREISSINGER

    1. Re: AW: [CZ] Stubenbach/Gruberg - ONLINE Gazetteer
    2. Betty, I mentioned last evening that Stubenbach and Gruberg had the same coordinates as Dolni Kamenec at 83.4 miles SW of Prague in the Czech Republic. When I checked those coordinates using the link to MapQuest at ShtetlSeeker, the only close village to that location was Prasily. MapQuest is not a very reliable map server either. I assumed that Dolni Kamenec was close by. That is when I stopped looking further. As pointed out, ShtetlSeeker has its limitations and there are other tools (and probably more usedful ones)listed under On-Line Research Tools at the CZECH Mail List web site on the Genealogy page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~elainetmaddox/czgenealogy.htm At the top of the list is Felix Gundacker's Gazetteer and Geographical Listing of Placenames. I was in error not to point out that his source materials are a very useful resource for identifying old villages and parishes. Also on the same page is a link to the Czech Atlas Map Server. Had I taken the time to follow up on the Dolni Kamenec reference using Atlas, I would have realized that apparently no such place exists at that location either and the only close (and logical choice) village is Prasily. I apologise for the misinformation. Ron Mlejnek > > From: "Ing. One place to get a good start is to go to the web site for this list and become familiar with the main categories of information. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~elainetmaddox/index.htm For your specific question, one good place to find German_Czech name equivalents is JewishGen ShtetlSeeker Town Locator. You will find the link under On-Line Research Tools on the Czech Genealogy page at the above site. STUBENBACH is now known as DOLNI KAMENEC and it is located 83.4 miles SW of Prague GRUBERG does not have a Czech equivalent name so I suspect it no longer exists. It probably had a Jewish cemetery or Jewish population at one time so it is also listed and it's location is also 83.4 miles SW of Prague. I can only guess that DOLNI KAMENEC now includes both places once known as STUBENBACH and GRUBERG. If you click on the coordinates link at JewishGen ShtetlSeeker, it will give you a map at MapQuest which will allow you to navigate around the area of these two towns. Lastly, sometimes a search at www.google.com will find you historical information about locations. Otherwise, you might have to hire someone or get someone to volunteer to actually go there and get historical records. Good luck and welcome to the "List".
