In Oct. I also will be making a trek to ancestral villages in the CZ Republic. The researcher that has been doing some for me had this to say: "I recommend you to take some cash money with you. It is not common to pay by card in shops and hotels outside Prague. We pay mostly cash with exception of hypermarkets. My clients had problems to change even American Express Travel checks in southern Bohemia. We lost plenty of time having to drive to Ceske Budejovice as a small bank in small town did not accept travel checks, nor card and my client forgot his PIN to take Czech crowns on his card from bankomat." She went on to say I needed to avoid the obvious tourist traps and I could save money if I eat and shop where the Czechs eat and shop. To avoid dangers that would spoil the trip, she said, keep money and passport on your body (not in your pocket) and BEWARE of the pickpockets/gypsies. She also said the Prague taxi-cab drivers were the real robbers "we are ashamed of them" as they cheat foreigners horribly. The public transportation is very good and safe in the city and in bold lettering "Never take taxi in the street!" Hope this helps, Teresa > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Mary Ann Conklin" <maryannconklin@earthlink.net> > To: <CZECH-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, September 10, 2004 3:09 PM > Subject: [CZ] U.S. coins... > > > > In two weeks, we leave to visit my ancestral villages in the C.R. I've been going back and forth to Germany the last few years to see my family. I don't think that most will want American Money, the Euro is worth more than the Dollar, It's to expensive to change, so actually it would only be a Souvenir, and because a lot of the People are struggling a bit more then before the Euro, a real tip in Euros would be much more appreciated. Have fun. Hello List, Does anyone know where to find a list of Czech names translated into English? I suppose I could go to the Cz dictionary for one or two i.e.Vaclav; Milada; Bozena. But I would like to have a list for reference. Thank you. ONE NATION UNDER GOD, ANN --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Shop for Back-to-School deals on Yahoo! Shopping.
In two weeks, we leave to visit my ancestral villages in the C.R. Then on to Germany to visit family. When I was in Europe (Germany amd France) in l965, porters and cab drivers were very interested in receiving a " Kennedy Half" dollar as a tip. Are there any current U.S. coins that might be particularly desireable? The Susan B Anthony dollar was not popular here, what about over there? Also, would there be special interest in our state quarters? Thanks for any answers.
I recently placed a request for Stanek information and got this in return. I only know a couple of words so can't figure this out. I would be so greatful to find out what it is all about. Thank you Susan H.C.V. S pozdravem . The gazetteer is wonderful! Thanks Elaine for giving the site and Judi for asking for it. I went in and found several locations already - it's worth looking for the ones you already know the location of because there may be picture postcards. One thing I did learn though is to be persistent. I was searching for Kutna Hora -- I knew it should exist in the list. But it didn't come up right away. I tried Kutna ... nothing; then I tried Hora. Many villages with Hora in it's name came up and way down on the list was Hora Kutna. There were 70 photographs/pictures so it was worth the hunt. Susan W.

Hi Elaine, yes I did see the posting. Thank you for your reply and letting me know about the posting. The site you refer to is a good one but the one I was at you could enter a place name and the reply told you everything that town had been called.........a big help when you have only a German or Austrian name and the villiages are all back to their original CZ names. Thanks again. That's true, Joan. Didn't think of that. I think the rule also states that if there is an "e" between two consonants like n e k, the "e" is eliminated and then you add the ova. Susan W.
For the telephone directory. Put in surname. Then go down to area and choose one from the scroll down list. If you leave it on Czech Republic it will go nowhere. Pick one of the areas and then click on persons. That should do it. Susan W
Not long ago, I was at a website I believe I found through this great list. It was a placename search that provided every name a village might have been called over the centuries. Would one of you listers know the address for this website? Thanks so much for any help. Judie Mason
