Hello, My Most Wanted Czech names are: DUSEK, CERVENY, LOPOUR/LAPOUR, MOTL, COUFAL, and many others. My ggrandfather Anton (Antonin) Lopour married Anna Cerveny in Czechoslovakia. His son, my grandfather Anton Lopour married Emily Dusek. Wanda
Jackie, Do you remember the name of the person you worked with at Our Lady of Peace? When they sent you copies, did you need to have an exact date? Was there a charge? At the time I wrote to them, I had many questions which they couldn't answer. They responded by sending me a baptismal certificate for my mother. That was kind of them but I already had that and was really searching for information going back to 1885. I am searching for my great grandparent's marriage records to no avail. The 1900 census says they were married 15 years but I have searched city records for several years and found nothing. Apparently, it wasn't necessary to have a license or marriage registration. As a result, Catholic marriages were not always registered Thanks for any help. The names I am searching are Hala and Holecek Susan W . -------------- Original message -------------- > I also did some research for the CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP. > Thru OUR LADY OF PEACE. Hello List, I called Our Lady of Peace this am and gave my surnames. They will begin a search, now; but, of course, need me to put it in writing. The letter is in the mail! SUSAN, I had sent to New York for a copy of the marriage certificate with the little info I had and they found him! I said his name was William Walsh (Valis) and they sent me the correct certificate for Wenceslas Walis! I did get your photos, thank you...If you think OLOP has changed, You Should see Jan Hus! JACKIE: When you say you did research IN this church, did you actually go to it? I would love to, but am in Ohio. I'd give anything for copies of the original documents! HELEN: Thank you, too, for the info. SEARCHING - VALIS (Walsh) CAD (Cada-Chadda) PODLESAK SLAVICEK ONE NATION UNDER GOD, ANN --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Ann, During that time, 323 East 61st Street was the address for a church called "Our Lady Of Perpetual Help, NYC". It was a Czech Church at that time. The church no longer exists, but all the records are being held at Our Lady Of Peace 237 East 62nd Street New York City, N.Y. 10021 Hope that this will help you. I also did some research for the CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP. Thru OUR LADY OF PEACE. They were very helpful. In fact they sent me copies of the records because of my health I couldn't go into NY and was having trouble finding the name of the town my grandfather came from. After much work and help from different people including a man in Canada who lectures on Old English writing. I found the town. What names are you looking for? My names are CECH COUFAL Jackie
Ann I didn't think to ask what names are you looking for? My names are CECH, COUFAL They lived in NY Jackie
I did research in this church and a man helped me a lot. Sent me photo copies of the certificates so I could compare handwriting. Trying to understand the town my grandfather came from. He then saw my grandmothers name on another marriage certificate and sent that to me also and it was her father's (my grandfathers) second marriage. Seems that when the wife dies the men would marry again within a few weeks or months. Good luck on your search. I just remember that The Church OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP records are now at OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH. 237 East 62nd street, New York, NY 10021. I believe the old church has been torn down. Good luck. Jackie
The address you mention, 323 E. 61st Street was indeed a Roman Catholic Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, established in 1874 - I believe between lst and 2nd Avenue. It was probably also the address of the priests of the parish. The address still exists; it is occupied by the Redemptorists priests - in a newer building. I have a picture - it is a four-story brick building -- the sign on the outside says O.L.P.H. (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) Redemptorists. Several years ago, the records of this church were sent to another church, Our Lady of Peace, 237 E. 62nd Street. Both of these churches are Roman Catholic; I believe Jan Hus is Presbyterian; Another church I found in my family records for New York City is S.S. Cyrilla a Methodej -- I believe this is another Roman Catholic Church. - pastor or priest at this church in 1886 was Rev.d. Bedrich Henn, Cyril & Methodius (or Constantine & Methodius) were brothers (Slavs) born in 827 and 826.S.S.R. I did find a current listing for what I believe is this church -- it is referred to as Croatian Church of St. Cyril & Methodius and is located at 502 W. 41st Street, NYC 10036. My mother was baptized in 1912 at 323 E. 61st Street and I wrote to the church where they referred me to Our Lady of Peace. I was and am searching for a marriage certificate and baptismal records for my great grandmother and grandmother. The pastor of Our Lady of Peace, Bartholomew Daly, responded to me and sent me a new copy of my own mother's baptismal record (I already had the original which is how I found the church to begin with). I was disappointed though because I had hoped to search through church records -- I don't believe the diocese allows that, probably for privacy reasons. Hope this helps. Thank you everybody, for your help. I will contact Our Lady of Peace asap and, hopefully, get a copy of the church marriage certificate and possibly other documents connected with my family.. AND YES! I would love to have a photo of Our Lady Of Perpetual Help. You may have seen a post by me some time ago telling of my grandmother's marriage in Jan Hus...I have an Original ( in color) Marriage certificate (Beautiful!) from Jan Hus and visited theretwo years ago while on vacation. I took lots of photos inside and out and if anyone would like to see what Jan Hus looks like now, I'd be happy to send photos. Thank you all, again! Ann -- I responded earlier to your question about 323 E. 61st St. Now I have a question for you. How did you obtain the certificate? Did you already have a date or was the record part of your family records already. Hope I was able to help -- if you'd like me to scan the picture of 323 E. 61st to you, I'd be happy to do it. Susan W.

I mentioned this the other day and was kind of surprised that no one reacted. It is free for home use. The offer is up Tuesday. It is well worth looking at. I installed it and the photo album alone has kept me entertained. The built-in PDF creator surely cannot be ignored. For those who do not have a word processing program, it should be seriously considered. It is mighty close to Microsoft programming and the "price" is right. The usual disclaimer, I have no interest in the program other than as a new and quite happy user. Did you try a reverse directory and see what if anything is at that address now? The address is most likely in Manhattan. That is just a guess since many of the boro's use many of the same street names. There is a Bohemia out on Long Island but it is not I would consider close to NYC. It is in Suffolk County which isn't part of the 5 boro's. Stefanie

THOSE ARE EXCELLENT REMINDERS FOR TRAVELERS IN THE EURO/CZECH AREA. I JUST WANT TO ADD: IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING IN A RENTAL CAR, BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT PARKING IT OVERNIGHT NEXT TO A MOTEL OR HOTEL. THE RENTAL AUTOS ARE EASILY RECOGNIZED AND THIEVES SPOT THEM. DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN THE CAR OVERNIGHT. CLEAR IT ENTIRELY. WE WERE SURPRISED ONE MORNING (EVEN THOUGH WE WERE TOLD BY THE HOTEL MANAGER THAT OUR CAR WAS SAFE) TO FIND THAT THIEVES HAD ACTUALLY DRILLED OUT THE DOORHANDLE OF THE CAR AND RANSACKED IT. WE LOST SOME DIRTY CLOTHES IN THE TRUNK, RAINCOATS INSIDE, AND SOME STRAY CASH IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT. THEY DIDN'T TAKE THE CAR PAPERS, BUT THEY COULD HAVE WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTRA BAD. KEEP IMPORTANT PAPERS IN A FOLDING WALLET OR SOMETHING AND TAKE THEM INSIDE. NO LOCK WILL KEEP THE THIEVES OUT. OTHER THAN THAT WE HAVE TRAVELLED OVER THERE FOR YEARS AND THAT'S THE ONLY TIME WE HAD TROUBLE. I FEEL RESPONSIBLE AS WE LET OUR GUARD DOWN AND GOT LAX. YOU NEVER WANT TO DO THAT IN ANY FOREIGN COUNTRY. MILLIE
Mary Ann, We spent time in the CR and Germany this summer. Had a very difficult time cashing $100 and $50 dollar bills in both places. Luckily we were staying with German friends and they put the U.S. bills into their checking account (after much discussion with the kindly bank folks...) and gave us Euros in exchange. No one in Europe wants U.S. hard currency anymore, as there are so many good counterfeits floating around. My advice - either use European ATM machines or carry U.S. twenties to exchange into Euros. Banks are also not real happy with Travelers Checks either. ATMs gives good exchange rates against your Visa or Mastercard. My experience is that Euros are the easiest to use and Visa is the preferred card in Europe. When in Plzen with German friends, my friend put her open purse down when looking at some souvenirs on the main drag and within seconds the wallet in her purse was gone. She reported it to the police, but there was not much interest in finding her "lost" wallet . Luckily, she called her father immediately back in Germany and stopped all charges on her credit cards. Three weeks later a Czech citizen found the wallet and mailed it to her. All her cards were intact but of course no cash. Don't look to the Police to offer much help or hope. WOMEN - HANG ON TO YOUR PURSE - KEEP IT CLOSED - DON'T SET IT DOWN. MEN - KEEP YOUR WALLET IN YOUR FRONT POCKET. ALL = ONLY CARRY ONE CREDIT CARD AND ONLY ESSENTIAL ID CARDS.
