    3. This is a forwarded message From: Miller Sandra <smiller@hamilton-medical.ch> To: <CZECH-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, September 18, 2004, 2:39:37 AM Subject: {not a subscriber} Re: [CZ] Castle Garden-HLUBOKY ===8<==============Original message text=============== I'd like to say a few words, too, about ancestry.com, etc. I conduct my research from overseas, so I can't go to the National Archives or other such repositories of records. I decided some time back, therefore, to get annual subscriptions to parts of both ancestry and genealogy. Although I pay several hundred dollars a year for everything, I consider this a necessary investment in my hobby -- and believe me, these dollars have paid off handsomely in the efficiency and effectiveness of my research. There is a lot to be said for doing a bit of spontaneous surfing without having to schedule and plan all my activities. I've made many important discoveries late at night, when I had a sudden urge to check something out. Then there's the bit about searching computer versus microfilm -- for me, FAR more efficient. I had given up ever finding the passenger records for my Hruda ancestors, for example. The Hrudas weren't indexed in Baca's book and I just wasn't finding them in the microfilm passenger list. I had given up, although I knew their approximate date of immigration. But one day, I was messing around on the ancestry.com passenger lists, and I don't know what I did, but voila! There they were, the Ruda family, arriving one day earlier than I thought, their first names mangled almost beyond recognition. Would I have had the patience to find them in any other way? I seriously doubt it! Do you know if there is any connection with the name Budinsky? 3. Hello List, I thought I'd let you know of my experience with NARA. The only information I had for my grandmother was her name and that she arrived in the US in 1888. I sent an e-mail to NARA asking what steps I should take to find her. I gave name and year of arrival....THAT'S ALL I had no idea where he landed, ship, etc!. Two days later I received a phone call from NARA. The lady was extremely nice and pumped more info out of me than I knew I had...We deduced her date of birth from the census and that she had come from Germany with a small daughter. I didn't know if gma had come through Castle Garden, but the lady on the phone said don't worry, NARA had all the records! Even tho we did not come up with a listing for gma, I was very inpressed with the extent NARA people will go to to help you. I must also tell you that on several occasions I have used the proper NARA forms and received the correct information and ships manifests. By all means use NARA! 2. Hi Ron -- I just read through your answer about finding items through the National Archives. I think many people know about that .... but how do you locate the correct film is you don't know what boat they arrived on, what year they came and maybe even don't know the town other than "someplace" in Bohemia. If I can find the information only knowing the name, that would be wonderful. Is that possible ... because it would save me reading through many pages of manifests online. Thanks for your continued insight and answers to so many questions that have been posed on the list. Take care. Sometimes it helps to keep the question with the possible answer. I think this started with a question about locating a passenger record that is not available through Ellis Island on-line records and whether some other on-line source might be better. As far as I know, all US Passenger Records are in the US National Archives and are available on microfilm. So basically the answer to the question is to use National Archive records, but for some reason this message never gets through. On the Czech Mail List web site there are links to the needed information: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~elainetmaddox/index.htm On the left menu there are two useful links called "US National Archives" and "US Passenger Records". The only way anyone can make a passenger record is that they have to transcribe a record that physically resides at the US Archives. All these secondary sources such as Baca's list, and Genealogy.com and the "Ship's Transcriber's Guild" have to use the primary source information. Any way, the easiest route to go (in my opinion) is to contact the US National Archives directly and ask them to locate the record and transcribe it for you. For a minimal fee, you will get a copy of the original manifest and a transcribed copy. Go to "Forms For Other Records" and get Form "NATF 81". Fill it out and if the record exists they will find it. If it does not exist, then the usual conclusion is that they entered by another means, usually illegally. They can jump off of boats carrying cargo, they can come through Canada or Mexico. 3. Thanks Carrie -- I was hoping someone like you would write. If more records are being added it might be worthwhile for me to wait. I have taken some of the free memberships which has led me to then to take longer memberships. I'm finding they are also making it quite easy to cancel -- you used to have a long wait for someone to answer the phone or eventually get on the line. Just remember -- you can never cancel over the weekend! Now they are very polite and helpful -- of course, always trying to get you to subscribe to another service. Thanks. Susan W.

    3. Dear Judi and Susan, I have used ancestry.com for years now and it has saved me a lot of time with my research. As for the passenger records-more are being added monthly and they are slowly being linked to the actual passenger manifests. Some are just basic and some give more than that. I don't know for sure which ones are linked as of yet. The 14 day trial is worth it but make sure you are very organized before hand and have lots of spare time to do your searching as you will quickly realize how much is there that you just "have" to get at! And of course remember to cancel before the 14 days is up. Many of the pay genealogy sites have the two week free trial offer. I do like the searching capabilities offered at ancestry.com. You can search in so many different ways that you are sure to come up with something useful. As for me-I have been able to find many ancestors in the ship records and have been unable to find many as well. Sometimes it is just due to the indexing or handwriting, for others I suppose the records aren't there yet or are just not available. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions please email me privately. I took a one-month membership to genealogy.com passenger records but really haven't found anything. I looked for your surname too but didn't find anything. I am toying with the idea of trying a free fourteen day membership at ancestry.com. You have to be careful with that one because if you don't cancel in time, you will own $199.00 worth of genealogy records for the year. It's easy to cancel but you must remember you can't cancel over the weekend. Then if I found it was worth pursuing, I could take a quarterly membership to the passenger records. I've been searching on ancestry.com -- if you put in a name, it will come up with listings of everything they have on that name. Then you can click on it and get a listing of the individual names but no more information. You must purchase the membership to get the details. I suspect with my family surnames, they might not be in the index. That would mean reading through many passenger records. That's why I'm still toying with the idea -- I don't know if I have the time right now for that. For my final thought -- and maybe others have already read the records. With genealogy.com you don't read the actual records; you read an excerpt. My understanding is that with ancestry.com you can read the actual passenger records. Would appreciate any information on this from someone who has done this. Hope this helps you Judy. If not, just ask. Susan W. ______________________________

    3. Hello all, I have a surname that I need help with. Haabetova. Would anyone know what the name with the male suffix would be? Anna Haabetova married Matej Petrak. I suspect they are from Bohemia. On her son's death registration Turceo is given as birthplace for Matej and Lorec or Lobec is given as her birthplace, can't quite make out the proper letters even with a magnifying glass. When my husband went to visit relatives he went to Zalov-Rostoky (I've spelled this phonetically, I'm not sure of the proper spelling) Thanks for any help. Dolores

    3. The site is working, I did just log in. Try the procedure described below again. Elaine *************** Subject: [CZ] Registration at Rodclan website ===8<==============Original message text=============== Honza, Your instructions are terrific, and I did add my paternal surname with a district. My poor maternal surname has no identifying geographical area, not certain what kind of response that will bring, but I figured I would take advantage of your website and stick her surname out there. Thank you for making it easy to enter the information. I hope the subscribers will use these instructions and handle their own registration. We must learn to do these things if we are going to be successful in our continuing quest for family information.
