One other thing to remember is that Leo Baca did record an incredible number of entries. But sometimes he missed a few .... and sometimes he found things that ancestry.com missed .... something to be expected with such a large endeavor. Many larger libraries carry the set and they might well obtain a volume on inter-library loan if you ask their research librarian. A very recent post here indicated this: My Volume VI, page 16, has the following: ANTRO, Jan 43, Anna 34, Valers 21, Antonia 16, Franz 9, Felix 8, Prodeslady, Bohemia: Moravia, 23 December 1885. Please note, the name is listed as ANTRO, not ANTROS. Page 89 has the following: JANECEK, Voiteck 15, Antonia 9, Prodeslady, Bohemia; Moravia, 23 December 1885. This would be the information (index of passenger listings) you would find in a Baca volume. Passenger name, age, ship name, departure point (usually country of origin). Hello, It is easier to tell you. There are nine volumes. Each book covers a range of years and one or more ports. Each book is an alphabetical listing of immigrants that Mr. Baca could identify as being from the Czech lands after looking at the films of ships' manifests. Information on those who are listed varies a bit. Most have full name, any accompanying family, their ages, the ship and date of arrival, where they emigrated from (which sometimes includes a city or town, but not often), and occasionally where they are expecting to go stateside. So they are truly lists. Remember that not everyone in USA or SK might be into genealogy. Not trying to discourage you being that I do recommend sending a letter with a photo to the people that list in the ancestral village's phone book. More and more people are learning or know English but first letter would be best in native tongue. We know that surname KEPUS existed in Cierne by Cadca. It does not show up there anymore but possible that the name is there but the family has no house phone or only cell phone. Does anyone in the family has his naturalization certificate? Not much information there but at least a court address where the papers are. www.obeccierne.sk nice photos from the airplane (letecke zabery).

I have been doing genealogy since 1990 and although it is all interesting work, this has been the hardest. Mostly I think because my husband's father, John Kepus, was married before he married my husbands mother, and back in those days people were very quiet about divorce. His father was very close mouthed about where he came from and even if he had any family here with him. Most of what I have found has been based on speculation. His 1st marriage license in NY (1911) has a Wm Kepus as a witness but we were told there were no siblings (cousin). I did find 2 phone numbers & address for Slovakia and I am going to write to them. Hopefully they will have someone to read English to them. Thank you again for taking the time to respond to me and your suggestions have been very helpful. Diane Kepus

We are researching our MICHALEK/SCHRAMM lines and are trying to get info on living relatives or info on towns for the following. When I search for Moravia or the other towns listed - I can't find any english sites - only in CZ or German? not sure which it is - if anyone has any of the surnames, would appreciate any help. We would also like to send a letter to any living relatives in these towns that might possibly be related to our ancestors. Does anyone know of any help on the web to form a letter in CZ? or is it safe to just send an english letter and hope that they can get someone to translate it? I have been to Ellis Island web site many times and cannot find anything close. I know he worked on Long Island, NY when he first got here. Supposedly no other family came with him but a Wm Kepus signed the marriage certificate. He stated his father was Joseph from Hungary. Everywhere I look I cannot find this name. I found 2 people in the Slovak phone book with the name Kepus and I am going to try and write to them.

As for me, I found the ship name on the baca list for my DVORAK family. There were two older and two younger children in the family. i surmised that the elder children came to the US with their parents, and sure enough i was right! There on the manifest of the SS FRISIA were my two great grandparents and their 2 eldest children! I was soooooooooooo excited to find that! Your ship you seek will be listed in whatever volume of the Baca books they will be found in, depending on what year they arrived.
