The US Sanitary Commission - as you read information about Union POW facilities, you occasionally will run across an organization called the US Sanitary Commission reporting about the problems with sanitation and other problems at these camps (for instance, it was their nagging about the conditions at Camp Douglas that got them to finally put in a drainage system at that camp). This site is a page with some notes of the history of that organization, with some information for re-enactors. http://www.netwalk.com/~jpr/index.htm Sue morgana@ghg.net

The National Prisoner Of War Museum, Andersonville, GA This site describes the Prisoner of War Museum located at Andersonville, and is useful for our purposes because it lists the number of POWs for the various wars we have been involved with, including percentage death rates, which gives you some idea of how badly the people involved were treated. http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/1862/museum.htm Sue morgana@ghg.net
Those who died at Rock Island are listed here: http://pw1.netcom.com/jeansmal/rockislpow.html Thanks, Edward G. http://www.insolwwb.net/~egerdes/

I'm interested in obtaining information about the Confederates transported to Hart's Island following the fall of Petersburg in April 1865. In particular, I am interested in Robert Henderson Massengill of Co. K 38th NC Infantry who died there 18 May 1865 and was buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery. Ruth Creech

Hello All One of my maternal ancestors Sgt. John Hobbs CO.C 57th Ga. Inf was captured and kept in a stockade for nineteen days near Atlanta, would their be records of his captivity and where would they be kept. Thanks Jacob
Hi list, I received those " black" digests also. They were accompanied by a message from Roots Web with a friendly reminder for list members to send all messages in plain text. Some were sent in "rich text" and other formats. Not all browsers can convert certain formats to plain text, so they show up as black or purple. Now back to my POW ancestor, Private James William McCormack <G> Where can I locate Confederate field hospital records for Dalton, GA. I understand that registers were kept of all amputations in certain hospitals. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks, A. Fort
New to the list and have a question; sorry if it is redundant. Is there a list available of the POW's taken to Camp Chase? Have an ancestor who was there ca 1862 after being wounded and taken prisoner at Shiloh. He was later moved to Vicksburg, MS where he was involved in a prisoner exchange. Tracy K

Hello, guys! This is my other email address...so expect to see messages from it from time to time. I am trying to compile lists of which POW camps were in use when...a number of the ones used early in the war were found inadequate or were disused for a variety of reasons, so I will send you a list based on which year of the war. Here is my first compilation. I am sure I won't hit every camp, but these will reflect the major ones. Union POW sites in 1861 Delaware Ft. Dear fellow researchers, Looking for data on my Civil War ancestor, Pvt. John H. Sheffield. He was from the town of Colquitt in Miller County, GA. Served in the CSA Army in a unit known as the "Miller Wildcats" of the GA Infantry. Was captured at the Battle of Cumberland Gap and held at Camp Douglas, IL until the war's end. Am hoping to find any POW records or other CW archives which may help me find more info on John, especially the names of his parents, siblings, etc. I've written to the state of GA for any CSA records on John Henry, but they have almost nothing on him. John was probably born in 1833, was married to Rebecca M. Sheffield and showed up in two federal census records in Miller County (1860 and 1900). Any information or suggestions on where I can get additional data would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help and Happy Holidays to all!! Donna L. This is a good research tool. hope you find your ancestor here, josie. Version 5.0 of the U.S. Civil War Units File (Dec. 15, 1998) is available on the web and will soon be available from the Rootsweb server (see below for addresses). The Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) lists people who have information on a unit or ship (often rosters, battles, etc.) and are willing to help others research it. Some are experts; most are "just" helpful fellow researchers. If you see a listing for a unit you are interested in, you can send the contact person email and share information. There are also listings for battles, organizations, counties, ethnic groups, etc. CWUNITS is five files (plus one for the intro and one for the FAQ) as follows: Part Filename Contents 0 CWUNITS introduction only 1 CWUNITS1 USA national & states A-I 2 CWUNITS2 USA states K-N 3 CWUNITS3 USA states O-W 4 CWUNITS4 CSA national & states A-M 5 CWUNITS5 CSA states N-V Q FAQ frequently asked questions and answers Parts 1-5 include the intro as well as the listings. Within a state the units are organized by number (1st Infantry, etc.). The Civil War Units File is on the American Civil War Homepage: http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/warweb.html under the heading Rosters of Combatants. I don't run this site. To get the latest version by email at any time: Send email to ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com (Upper and lower case count in the email address and everywhere else.) Subject: archive Text is: get genealog.cwunits get genealog.cwunits1 get genealog.cwunits2 get genealog.cwunitsq etc. The period (.) has to be after genealog and before the file name. jbass@digital.net 216 Beach Park Lane Cape Canaveral, FL 32920-5003 Home of The *HARRISON* Repository & *MY FAMILY* http://moon.ouhsc.edu/rbonner/harintro.htm My Family WWW: http://moon.ouhsc.edu/rbonner/index.htm LINDSAY & HARRISON Surnames & CSA-HISTORY Roots Mail List Data Managed by beautiful daughter Becky Bass Bonner and me, Josephine Lindsay Bass

My gg grandfather, Leonard Davis, enlisted in May of 1861 into G Co. 2nd Reg't Cav. Mo. Vols. CSA. He was discharged Dec. 17, 1861 and 2 weeks later enlisted in Co. G, 5th Reg't Inf., Mo. Vols. He fought in battles in Wilson Creek, Lexington, Elk Horn, Farmington, Iuka, Corinth, Port Gibson, Bakers Creek, and Vicksburg. Then the records state: "Went to Trans-Miss. Dept. never returned". I think that during this time he fought with Co. K, 10th Mo. Cav. Reg't, Marmaduke's Brigade. This was a company made up of exchanged prisoners following the surrender of Vicksburg. Does anyone know where I could find a list of CSA prisoners who died while in prison? Or does anyone have any other ideas about where I can find out what could have happened to him. His wife and 10 children never knew if he died or just didn't come back when the war ended. Sure could use the help of some experts! Thanks, Jim Hollingsworth Whitney, Texas
Two of the digests I've received are solid black??? Any ideas why?
