Hi, Sorry to come into this so late in the conversation, but I would like to say a few words abt this myself. I Pay $30.00 a month to have enough webspace to not only put my family lines on the internet, but I also co-share Lawrence Co. AR and have Izard Co. Ar as another webpage... All of this I do at my own expense. I do free lookups in the many books I have and the cost of thesas were considerable... I use my "free" time to help make the Civil War Pages in AR worth visiting. No one re-imburses me for this and I guess if I had to, I could come up with a dollar amount for my time and money that I give away every day of my life. I wouldn't mind donating to rootsweb, but I think I have already done my share of giving and I rarely get the chance to just "cruse around" on the net. Hope no one is offended, but I feel that those of us who do give so much shouldn't be asked for more money... Anyhow, that's just me! :-D Jeri Helms Fultz LOMilam@aol.com wrote: > > In a message dated 12/20/98 6:31:24 PM Eastern Standard Time, morgana@ghg.net > writes: > > > I am not particularly worried myself about them misappropriating funds, > since a lot of this has been done from crisis to crisis, and there probably > haven't been enough funds to really misappropriate... > > Hi Sue, > I have never said anything about misappropriation of funds. Georgia's Nancy Harts... This is one of those interesting stories that are on the fringe of the POW issue...it involves an Oscar LaGrange, who had been captured by the Confederates, but nursed to health by a Confederate Senator's niece, a group of women at the town of LaGrange, GA, who had formed themselves into a militia group, and a group of soldiers who were taken prisoner, but released by LaGrange on news of Lee's surrender. It's a neat story. Thanks, Lisa, for bringing it to my attention! http://www.lgc.peachnet.edu/archives/harts.htm Sue morgana@ghg.net
I don't do this often, but it's time we think about how we're getting all these neat messages we find in our mailboxs. Consider how much we enjoy being on email lists. Have you made any contacts? Gotten any useful information? How about USGenWeb pages? Ever found any data that was handy? Ever use Cyndi's list? List any names on the RSL? Well if you have done any of these things, then you have used some of the facilities at Rootsweb. What is RootsWeb? It is a data cooperative set up by two very giving people, Karen and Brian Leverich. Their goal was, and is, to help give the best genealogical information to the public at the least possible cost...therefore they spend huge amounts of their own time and effort and money and lost sleep to keep Rootsweb up and running...Last year when all the storms were hitting California, Brian had to even go out in the middle of all that muck and buy a generator, - which he had to sleep near to, cause it had to be refueled every four hours, or thereabouts...But he kept Rootsweb online. The Leveriches are that type of people. But that is not enough by itself. Each holiday season brings a huge rush of people who get computers for Christmas...and one of the things they do with these computers is get on the internet. For a lot of people that means they are going straight into genealogical research...which normally means an rush to Rootsweb...To prepare for this, the Leveriches have taken out a personal loan for $25,000 for the new equipment they need. Folks, if we don't get behind Rootsweb, it may end up going the way of sites like FTM site or Ancestry.com...nice sites for what they do, but they don't and can't offer the low-cost, friendly home for genealogy that Rootsweb has always been... Rootsweb is a data cooperative - the root here is cooperative...we're all needed to help to make this work...but only about 2% of Rootsweb users support Rootsweb. But support is easy, and has great rewards, the least of all is getting to share information and data through all the great lists and web pages Rootsweb hosts, and maybe even running a list or Genconnect board or other Rootsweb activity. To find out more about what YOU can do to help Rootsweb, go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/members/ to see what the different membership levels are, and how to subscribe. If you love this genealogical corner of the internet we have developed, don't just sit there - do something! Sue morgana@ghg.net Rootsweb Donor
In a message dated 12/20/98 6:31:24 PM Eastern Standard Time, morgana@ghg.net writes: > I am not particularly worried myself about them misappropriating funds, since a lot of this has been done from crisis to crisis, and there probably haven't been enough funds to really misappropriate... Hi Sue, I have never said anything about misappropriation of funds. In fact, I don't know how you could "misappropriate" funds when there has never been a legal statement of how funds are supposed to be used, as far as I know. All there seems to be is a murky, non-specific "understanding" that "if you send us money we will use it to run Rootsweb" (my words, not theirs). Obviously, that could mean anything, and leaves a lot of latitude. My point is, why not eliminate any possible doubt, and/or any possible appearance of improprieties? It can only have positive results. After a while, people are going to equate silence on the subject as concealment, and if people start to think they are being "suckered," Rootsweb will dry up and blow away. None of us want that. If everyone concerned is as altruistic as it appears, and I have no reason to doubt that they are, then there should be no problem bringing the finances into the clear light of day. It's time. This is off the subject of this list, so I'll shut-up and not mention it again, but when you mentioned Rootsweb donations, it reminded me of my concerns. Take care, Oliver.
Hi Sue, I agree with most of what you said regarding Rootsweb. I love Rootsweb and am very grateful that it is in existence. I am a donor at the Sponsor level, and I plan on increasing that to the Sponsor Plus level next year. However, the fact that I have never seen any FULL accounting for the donations that they collect, and continuously solicit, makes me very uneasy. The only thing I have seen are specific things like, " I had to buy a generator, or a new server"....etc. Other organizations that ask for donations do it, don't they? Why not Rootsweb? If nothing else it just makes good public relations, and would probably increase donations. I have asked them these same questions twice, but have never gotten answer. Maybe I have just missed it. Have you ever seen an accounting or audit results? Thanks, Oliver.
My g-grandfather's name appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War. Info says he was captured at Port Hudson, LA on July 9, 1863 and paroled July 12 or 13, 1863. Is there a web site where I can find out what was going on in Port Hudson at that time? Thanks. Zelda jimzelda@apci.net

I am new to the list but I would like to know if there is a site or any information that describes Camp Chase, Ohio, or some experiences of prisoners there. My gggrandfather Rhieus D. Lester, 37th Virginia Calvary, captured at Moorefield, was a prisoner there for 10 months in 1863 and 1864 before being processed for exchange/release through Point Lookout, MD. Thank you for any information you might have. -- Lenise Cook http://www.rootsweb.com/~nehoward/

Looking for records on Confederate prisoners, both military and civilian, who were imprisoned and/or died at Camp Chase, Ohio. I'm trying to find 2nd Lt. A(ndrew) J(ackson) Lacy, Co. C, 8th Tennessee Cavalry, who may be listed as a civilian because he resigned his commission immediately before disappearing (and probably being captured in or near Jackson County, Tennessee in August 1863). Another member of his company, John Franklin Clinton, was captured at the same time, near Gainesboro, Tennessee, and taken first to Camp Chase for several months before being moved to Rock Island, Illinois. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Mark E. Lacy lacy@iac.net
What is the CW-POW list? This is a place where we discuss an aspect of the war that is often swept at least somewhat under the rug...that of the POW experience of the CW era. This discussion is open for discussion of both Union and Confederate POWs, the camps they were interred in, the administration of the camps and some of the politics behind the decisions that involved these institutions. This is not a forum for the discussion of the right or wrong of the issues behind the war. We are focused here only on the POW experience. That said, what do I mean, POW experience? This includes stories about the camps the people were kept in. This includes experiences of returning POWs. This includes queries about people we know or suspect were POWs during the war. It also includes sharing information about the men who ran the camps, the soldiers who guarded the camps, information about exchanges of POWs, and related. If you see a site or have a bit of information about these camps, feel free to share. If you can recommend a book, a magazine article, a tv program, please do. Above all, while we share research, queries, information and exchange knowledge, it is important to remember we have very few rules on this list, but I do enforce them. 1). Be nice to each other. It is important that you realize there are real people reading your messages, and if the discussion gets too heated, sometimes things are said that are interpreted as hurtful or personal attacks. 2) As listowner, I claim the right to pass judgment on what is or is not acceptable to the list. 3) Virus alerts or chain letters of any type are not acceptable to post. That's it. Hope you enjoy the list, and that your research is fruitful. Sue morgana@ghg.net
