Document Archive, Tennesee Division Sons of the Confederacy On this page, there are two documents of interest especially to our list: Nine Months in a Nothern Prison, an article by Sgt. G. W. D.Porter, 44th Tenn. Infantry The Trial of Major Henry Wirz: A National Disgrace by Captain Glen LaForce (I haven't read either yet, and I am not responsible for their content! But both look interesting.) These are zipped .doc/.wri files. http://www.tennessee-scv.org/archive.html Sue morgana@ghg.net
I am interested in any accounts which give me some idea of the life and conditions in two CW prisons, "Military Prison" in Louisville, KY and "Fort Delaware" in Delaware. My g-g-grandfather, a Confederate soldier of The Army of Tennessee, Company D, 3rd Battalion of the Mississippi Infantry, was captured by the Federals December 1864 in Franklin, TN. He was in the Kentucky prison in Louisville and then transferred to Fort Delaware, according to National Archives records. Any information on these two camps would be greatly appreciated; or if anyone out there knows of an individual who does lookups for these two camps, I would appreciate knowing where I may contact that person. With Gratitude, Lisa R. csadautr@aol.com

the book "Story of Camp Chase by William H. Knauss" is the best their is. I think Camp Chase was a "debriefing" place for many released union prisoners as well as a prison camp for Confederates. To those that have responded, thanks and I will get back as time warrants. This is another call for any members that have info on the 3rd Tn. Cav. and or those brave men that served in this unit. I am interested in any letters, diaries, etc. that may be out there as I am building a compendium on the aforementioned unit. To those that have sent pics I am also very happy to hear from you. I will try if with some help scan and send out a pic of Pvt, Charles M. Eldridge, 3rd Tn. Cav. Company G. the last survivor of the Sultana and one of those held at Cahaba Prison. It takes a subscription to access their database, but it's only $25.00 a year. I have used it many times and found it most helpful. In fact I've found 3 of my ancestors. I found your ancestor. It has his enlistment date. Some of the regiments have a regimental history, but his doesn't. Hope this helps. Shirley, In a message dated 12/23/98, you sent the following: <<Hi Anne, I think you intended to send this to CW-POW-L , but it,s addressed to me. You seem to have a lot of information about Point Lookout that I have never seen anywhere before. I would like to take you up on your offer to do lookups in the book that you have, I appreciate it very much. My gggrandfather enlisted in Tenn.; Morristown. Pvt. Elisha Chaney, 60th Tenn Mtd Inf., Co. A or H He died there Dec 24, 1863. Where did you get the medical information? Happy Holidays and Thanks again---- Shirlet>> Your ancestor, Pvt. Elisha Chaney, Company A, 60th Tennessee Infantry Regiment is listed in Edwin Beitzell's book, which, incidentally can be ordered online through Amazon.com. It's title is Point Lookout Prison Camp for Confederates. I don't recall the price, but you can access the site and it will tell you how much. I got the medical information by requesting my gggrandfather's military records from NARA, the National Archives in Washington, DC. You have to request a form from them, fill it out and return it to them. After that they will send you all records they have on your ancestor. There is a small fee, but I cannot remember how much; they will tell you however, before you place your request. I would suspect that he died of a type of fever, such as my gggf did as the camp was a breeding ground for all types of diseases and very little medical attention was given to Southerners. If you buy the book and read it, you will be disgusted at the treatment given the Southerners. Pt. Lookout Prison Camp was ten times worse than the Confederate's Andersonville Prison in Georgia, made so popular to hate by movies, books, etc., all aimed to make the Confederates out to be devils of the worst kind... I don't know where you live, but if you can ever get to Maryland, do try to visit Point Lookout. It is a sobering experience! Anne
Can anyone point me to a place on the web that has information regarging Camp Douglas that was in Chicago. I found two sites that give brief overviews and bibliographies of books that give more information, but has anyone done any posting as to the soldiers who were interned there? We have a release document for Arthur Terrill (which I can't find at the moment to get the date of release! However I don remember that it was near the end of the war.), but I can't determine the rank and the unit appears to be 5 Ky Cav. I have searched several sites that list confederate units and can find no reference to the 5 Ky Cav. I did find one site that indicated Morgan may have had a 5th regiment in his cavalry, but I can't find the reference now. Any help? (other than I need to be more organized and remember where things are!) Larry Miller Edwardsville IL
Everyone has been great about helping and sharing information, especially Sue who has been working overtime putting her heart and soul into this list. I have a compliation from the National Archives of Confederate military and civilians who died in union P.O.W. camps and would be happy to do look-ups,with-in reason. I ask that you limit your request to one or two at a time, please. Also please email your request to me privately rather than posting them to the list. I will need the given name or initials as well as the surname to do the look-up. A unit or state that your relative served in would also be helpful,if available. Sue,ask away................
