    3. William MCMAHON and his brother John Henry were in the 12th Texas Confederate Infantry Regiment also known as the 8th Infantry and YOUNG'S Regiment. They were inducted at Camp Henry in Grimes Co. TX. Both were in prison and both injured. They were paroled in July 1865 at Millican TX. I would like to find out the name of the prison. William was my Great Grandfather. I feel fortunate that my aunt and her cousin remember him and are able to tell me what he was like. Somewhere, someone in the family has his shirt with bullet hole. Another family member remembers her aunt talking about Uncle Billy coming home from the war in rags. There is a picture of him with five of his sons at: http://www.geocities.com/~stevemcmahon/ This site is The Daniel and Priscilla EAST MCMAHON page. 2. Pvt. James Monroe Holmes (age 27) Co. B 135th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Pvt. Nicholas C. Brown, Sr., cousin of James) same unit Pvt. Thomas Hayes (age 18 friend) same unit They were with their company, guarding the North Mountain B&O railroad station and bridge near Hedgesville, WV, having been called up for 100 days with their National Guard unit in early May of 1864. On July 3, 1864, a calvary brigade moving north with Gen Early's raid into Maryland, surrounded them, capturing Co. B and some of Co. F. All of Co. B was sent to Andersonville, also know as Camp Sumpter, arriving there July 27 where they were prisoners until Sept. 30. With Sherman getting closer, they were transported to Camp Lawton, Millen, GA where they stayed until Nov. 20, 1864. There were transported by flatcar to Savannah, GA where they were paroled and put aboard the USS Constitution and sailed to Annapolis, MD. Of the 200 POW's brought there only 3 were able to get off the ship by themselves. James told his family that the only way the three stayed alive was for one of them to be awake at all times. Of the 80 or so men captured, 23 survived. JBaxley2@aol.com Joe Baxley Reisterstown, MD

    1. [CW-POW-L] Re: Roll Call: Carter of TN
    2. David Orr
    3. LeRoy C. Carter fought on the side of the Confederacy in the Civil War. He enlisted Jun. 9, 1861, and his rank was Sgt. in Tennessee's 17th Infantry, Company K. Although LeRoy Carter was listed as captured at the Battle of Chickamauga, Sep. 19, 1863, no records of him have been found from a Prisoner of War camp. After the war LeRoy C. Carter did return to his hometown of Granville in Jackson County, Tennesee. He moved in Arkansas about 1872, where it seems he changed his name to Robert W. Orr (partly to avoid horse theft charges). He died there in 1936 at the age of 95. -----Original Message----- From: Sue <morgana@ghg.net> To: CW-POW-L@rootsweb.com <CW-POW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, December 29, 1998 6:55 AM Subject: [CW-POW-L] Message from Listowner... >We are now over 220 members... > >Why don't we make a roll call list of our CW POWs? 3. We are now over 220 members... Why don't we make a roll call list of our CW POWs? That way, even if we don't connect with any one right now, it will be in the list archives, and someone may run across the information at a later point. Information to include in the roll call: (If you don't know it all, it's okay, but the more information, the more likely you are to find out more stuff) Person's name, rank and unit (don't forget state and whether they were Union or Confederate); prison they were kept at; place they were captured, place they were paroled at. If you know anything about their stay, it would also be useful. Be sure to put Roll Call as the message subject, and put your email address at the bottom of the message, so people who are on digest can easily figure out who is writing the message.
