One item some of you might be interested in if you have the Family Tree Maker Genealogy program.....I have the disk #119 - Military Records: Confederate Soldiers, 1861 - 1865 which contains information on all Confederate POW's who died in Union POW Camps. It is indexed by Camps and you can also look up soldiers individually by name. It gives names, companies, dates of death, and burial locations. The information on the disk is photocopies of the original records. I hope this bit of information might be of some help to someone. Edward L. Joe Powell enlisted in the Confederate Army in July 1864 during the last call for volunteers aged 16 to 50. Joe Powell was 47 years old at the time and had three sons in the 3rd Louisiana (Wingfield's) Cavalry. A narrative written by his daughter stated that he went into training about 7 miles from their home in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana (Camp Moore was about 8 miles from the home, and I am unsure if Camp Moore was still in use in 1864). He received a one day furlow in October of 1864, and while home, he was captured by Federal troopers and sent to Elmira Prison in New York. This is where it gets fuzzy. According to the Narrative, Joe Powell was exchanged close to the end of the war and was sick at the time of the transfer. He made it to Richmond and died in the hospital there. Prisoners who were sick were exchanged from Elmira in February and March of 1865. Another researcher believes that he died around March 10, 1865 due to an entry in the hospital records for the death on March 10, 1865 of a "J. Powell" of the "27th North Carolina Regiment," where Joe Powell's brother, Capt. Oliver Powell, commanded an artillery battery. I don't think that Joe Powell was a member of this unit as he mustered in Louisiana. On the west side of Richmond was located a general hospital for Louisiana soldiers. Soldiers who died from this hospital were buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, where Joe Powell is reputed to be buried in an unknown grave. The narrative written by Joe Powell's daughter stated that the family was informed of her father's death by two men who were captured in the same raid and were sick with Joe Powell in Richmond. They returned his little Testament to the family with the news. I don't know the identity of these men. I checked the database on the Elmira Prison website, but I could not find a "Joseph," "Joe," or "Josiah Powell" listed, and it does not appear that Joe Powell has a Confederate service record. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. hi- I'm new to this list - and am wondering if anyone has any good pointers for me on accessing information on Salisbury Prison? I have come upon a few websites - but getting feedback from others with the same interest would be most helpful. I have a soldier who was a prisoner there, and died there, 1864. Is it to be assumed that they would bury the dead on the grounds there? [this was a Union soldier, from the 8th NY H.A.] Thanks for any help! Linda
Hello I am new to this list. I am researching the WARBURTON family based in the North East of England. Information brought down by the family says that JOHN WARBURTON was sent to prison for kiling a man during a fight. The possible year for this is 1904-1907. According to his CV he had a 3-year rest. My other difficulty finding out information is, although he was born and brought up in Middlesborough he travelled around the country working as a Bridge Erector for Head Wrightson, and at the time when he took a 3 year rest he was working in London on the Grosvenor Bridge over the Thames. What I would like to find out where and how I can research if he was in prison at this time. Are there any prison records I can look through? Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Look forward to hearing from SKS. Regards Anne Thompson
Time for Hands-On Preservation with Park Day 2007 The Civil War Preservation Trust and the History Channel are once again sponsoring our 11th Annual Park Day! On Saturday, April 7, 2007, volunteers throughout the country will work together to clean and repair the grounds at over 100 Civil War sites. Last year, approximately 4,000 volunteers played a vital role in sustaining these parks, providing more than 12,000 hours of service. Helping hands are needed everywhere for a wide variety of short and long term projects, providing interesting and rewarding volunteer opportunities for individuals, couples, schools, families, corporations, citizen groups and service organizations. Clubs and organizations can help with specific park improvements: trail renovation, tree planting, stream restoration, litter cleanup, minor repairs and more. The event is also perfect for Scout troop service projects or corporate team-building efforts. Without the help of volunteers, trash accumulates in these natural areas, harming wildlife, polluting lakes and rivers, and detracting from the beauty of your community. This event is a fun and effective way to improve the natural environment in your local community. Thanks to your donated time and skills, your favorite state park can see improvements now instead of sometime in the future. At each site, volunteers will get a free t-shirt and have the opportunity to hear historians tell them about the land they are helping to preserve. Plan to join fellow preservationists on Saturday, April 7, 2007 at a site near you for a day of history and hard work. Civilwar.org Cut and paste the url above for contact info for your state. Click on "Park Day" on the right hand side of the webpage Then scroll down to the bottom and click on the link to take you to the info for each state. If anyone has a problem please let me know and I'll send you the direct link and assist you as much as possible. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Thank you again for following up on this. I have looked into this many times. Here is the list of the batallion: You will see there is no name for Marion Terry (Crabtree) here. Yes, my ancestor, going by the name of Marion Terry, did marry Rachael Lay (his 4th wife) who was the first cousin of his second wife, Elizabeth Lay. But he was the same man whose birth name was Marion Crabtree and Elizabeth Lay's children by him were listed as Crabtree children in his pension request from the Union. If Co. A is Confederate, and he served also in two different Union regiments, how can this be? Also, Marion Terry was briefly at Champ Chase, so he would have to have been Confederate while there (or a spy). His pension is from the Union - I have all the documentation. I was unable to go directly to the site you mentioned but am very interested to learn where I might seek further information. He married, divorced, owned property, etc. as Marion Terry and also used the birth name of Marion Crabtree where it was convenient. Please advise me of any further information you find about this rascal! The 7th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion Organized November 15, 1861 , at Camp Jim Davis. Epperson Springs, Macon County. Mustered into Confederate Service at Camp Sandy Barnes, Gallatin in December 1861. Reorganized June 13, 1862, by order of General Bragg under the Conscript Act and merged with the 1st (McNairy's) Battalion to form the Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. As there was already a 2nd Regiment on official rolls, at Richmond this was officially designated the 22nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. This caused some confusion as the regiment was known by both designations. The Battalion was on duty scouting. picketing and guarding in Macon County, Tennessee and Allen and Monroe Counties, Kentucky, and at Carthage, guarding supplies for General Zollicoffer. Then guarding the L & N Railroad above Gallatin during the retreat from Bowling Green of the Confederate Army. Here they received a rather famous order "To keep the railroad open whether they could or not". Then fighting in the battle of Shiloh where a member of the command received the surrender of General Prentiss command. The Battalion was reorganized under the Conscript Act June 13, 1862. In the merger with the Is, Battalion company letters were changed and Companies A and C were consolidated to form D of the 2nd or 22nd Regiment. E and F were consolidated to form G Company, B formed E and Company D formed F. The rest of the Regiment was made up of three companies of the 1st (McNairy's) Battalion plus three independent companies. As officers were elected by the men of the command, the officers were not at all happy about having to be up for election again and Colonel Bennett, Major Smith, all of the captains and a number of the lieutenants went home. Most of them engaged in service with Other commands Major Smith finally became Colonel of the 8th Tennessee Cavalry, Captain Odom returned to duty with this same 22nd Cavalry and Colonel Bennett recruited another command, the 9th Tennessee Cavalry. In these records we notice many were discharged with no reason given. Following the passage of the Conscript Law by the Confederate Congress all men under or over age were to be discharged. One proviso was that men under 18 years were to be retained 90 days after passage of the law. Unless specifically stated as being caused by physical disability it was Impossible to know if they were under age, over age, or disables by sickness, or wounds. Hence the absence of information. Here we were losing hundreds of trained men which might very easily meant the difference in winning or losing. At this time Confederate soldiers from Middle Tennessee were disgusted with lack of leadership in certain cases and victories not being followed up and desertions became very common. These deserters were gobbled up by Union forces to prevent their return to service, which they would have had to do later when the age limit was raised and lowered. Some were simply leaving the army for a brief visit home, intending to return and when captured claimed to be deserters thinking they might not be sent to a northern prison. It will be noticed that in several cases they went to prison rather than taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States Muster Roll for Company F, 7th Cavalry Battalion Later known officially as Company G, 22nd Tennessee Cavalry An * after the name denotes continued service after becoming Company G in the 2nd or 22nd Cavalry Regiment. This company was organized at Gallatin. There not being enough men for a full company and companies A and B having more than the required number (100), enough were detached and added to Company F to complete the company. The verbiage in my email should have stated "4th Tennessee Cavalry" instead of 4th Tennessee Infantry. The heading was correct. Sorry for the confusion.
