Hi List, I have been asked about "CUTTS" & "COUTTS" in Australia. There appear to be slightly more "COUTTS" than "CUTTS". To give you an example I looked at the Victorian Pioneer Index (1836-1888) which does show the "Place of Birth" for marriages & deaths up to about the early 1880's. After this period the "Place of Birth" is omitted and you only get it if you purchase the full birth Certificate. CUTTS are shown as born in England, India & the USA (plus various Australian States) whereas COUTTS are shown as born in Scotland, England (less than in Scotland) & Germany (plus various Australian States). There are also some "CUTT", but one has to remember that the clerk who wrote down the name often wrote it as he heard it and I have found some families have children shown with the Surnames spelt both ways. I hope that the above is a help to the non Australian members of the List. Talk to you all later. Best regards from Melbourne on a mainly fine winter's day (9º to 15ºC). ,--_|\\\\ ---------------------------------------- / \\\\ Ian Butterworth. \\\\_,--.x/ Member, Melbourne PC User Group v -------------------------------------------- 23 Glenvale Road RESERVOIR VIC 3073 AUSTRALIA Phone/Fax +61 (0) 3 9470-1170 E-mail: [email protected] [email protected] For Life Address: [email protected] Web Site: http://member.melbpc.org.au/~ian
THIS MESSAGE DOES NOT CONTAIN AN ATTACHMENT Hi Folks, I do not totally disagree with Ian's comments. Yes, Ian is correct it is "mainly fine" in Victoria, Australia today - but it is damn cold in the southern areas of Victoria! - on the banks of Port Phillip Bay. Having the "CUTTS" surname in my family tree, I have found a mine of Australian information on the family name, leading back to England. As Ian pointed out, there are changes with the CUTTS surname, and many other other surnames, due to accents, illiteracy etc. If I can be of help to anyone with lookups for the surname within Australia, I am more than willing to help if I can. For your information, I have listed below the resouces I have. All the best, Dorne. *********************************************** RESOURCES ~~~~~~~~~~~ Australian Vital Records Index 1788-1905 Coburg & Fawkner Cemetery <17th July,1996 Convicts To Port Jackson 1788 - 1842 Unassisted Immigration To Victoria 1852 - 1879 New South Wales BD&Ms 1788 - 1888 New South Wales BD&Ms 1889-1918 New South Wales Marriages & Deaths 1919-1945 Queensland BD&Ms 1829 - 1889 South Australian Births (only) 1842-1906 South Australian Deaths (only) 1842 - 1915 South Australian Marriages (only) 1842 - 1916 Tasmania BD&Ms 1803-1899 Victoria BD&MS 1836-1920 Victoria Deaths 1921-1985 Victorian Inquest Index 1840 - 1985 Western Australian BD&Ms 1841-1905 British Vital Records Index 1538 -1888 National Burial Index : England & Wales 1538 - 2000 1851 Tri Census (Norfolk/Devon/Warwick) 1881 British Census & National Index Vital Records Index Western Europe ***************************************************** Regards, Dorne Saunders (Australia) [email protected] *GENEALOGY LOOKUPS* - putting families together - ANTI VIRUS INSTALLED ******************************* ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ian BUTTERWORTH" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 07, 2002 9:05 AM Subject: [CUTTS] Re: "CUTTS" & "COUTTS" in Australia > Hi List, > > I have been asked about "CUTTS" & "COUTTS" in Australia.
