    3. Dear Brian, Re George Cutts, Wine and Spirit Merchant, E.Retford: I have compiled a draft family from IGI and Census Records of Wellow and E. Retford Cutts, but these are descended from Joseph Cutts m. Elizabeth Hind m.13.4.1779 at Wellow. They appear to have been Saddlers and Harness makers in the main. I thought John Cutts of White Hall in 1861 census, corn merchant belonged to this family but now know he is son of John Cutts who married Hannah Wheatcroft, and who were canal boat owners with connections in Manchester, Nottingham, Ordsall, also I think at Cromford, Derbys. (still collecting info.....) I am trying to see how this John Cutts above married in 1810 at Crich, related to my John Cutts b.c. 1778 at Arnold. I am sure there is a relationship - probably some sort of cousin. I have a query as to whether the George you refer to is grandson of the above Joseph=Elizabeth through their son Joseph Cutts=Sarah Fox m.15.8.1814 Wellow. Do not yet think so. George in 1841 was a Carriers apprentice ( living with Wm.Whitlam, Carrier, and wife Catherine. at Church Gate, S. Side, E. Retford.) b.c.1823 at W. Retford. He went on to marry Sarah E.......b.c.1835 at Grimsby. See Census 1871 Market Place, E.Retford, Ref 3453/46. also Kellys Drectory 1899 at Pelham House, Queen St., Retford. I am finding that Carriers are becoming a common denominator in the connecting Cutts. They could be on canal or road - were based at inns where horses could be kept, coaches/carts picked up and dropped people, mail, goods. They were centres of intelligence and activity.....even courts were sometimes held in Inns in rural locations. These Cutts would be entrepreneurs and have access to the farming community, gentry and local tradespeople. Hope this will help you (and others) to follow my somewhat haphazardhous lateral thoughts on these Cutts families. I am sure they link in with the ones on the Dukery Estates of Welbeck area and then back to the areas in the ownership of the Dukes of Devonshire, where there appear to be very early Cutts connections. Please send me any information you may collect and I will add to what I have and return it with interest (I hope!!) Good Hunting, Keep in touch, we will all link arms eventually!! Best wishes, Mavis. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian Berrington" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 25 August 2001 23:13 Subject: [CUTTS] FW: Retford Cutts, Lavinia Cutts > -----Original Message----- > From: Brian Berrington [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: 25 August 2001 09:10 PM > To: Harry Stanley > Cc: [email protected] com > Subject: RE: Retford Cutts, Lavinia Cutts > Hi Valerie, > > Thanks for the information. > > I have a feeling that my great, great Grandmother Lavinia Berrington (nee > Cutts), although christened in Whitewell, Derbys. about 1796, moved to > Retford about with her father George, her mother Frances and her brother > William. 2. Hi Mavis and all >>I am finding that Carriers are becoming a common denominator in the connecting Cutts. My early CUTTS were apprenticed gunsmiths/cutlers so are they likely to have been 'on the road' or should I say, 'on the water' - type jobs ? Cutlers rather than gunsmiths ? Kind regards, William http://www.hartley-family.org.uk/
