    2. Marion Hornby
    3. Hi everyone I am a new subscriber and my CUTTS are all from Surrey. The earliest I have is Henry CUTT who married Elizabeth COLLYER on 10 Dec 1767 in Horsell, Surrey. Their 11 children were all baptised in Pyrford, Surrey. My branch settled in Ockham, Surrey and later to Teddington where my Grandmother Annie Mary CUTTS was born. She married Walter WIlliam JACQUES in Wandsworth. Others were in Send & Ripley and Byfleet. Does anyone else have Surrey CUTT or CUTTS? 3. I have proven my Cutts line back to John Cutts, b.c.1777/9 Arnold married 24.1.1801 St. Mary's, Nottingham, to Ann Bennell born c.1779 Findern. Both John and Ann were buried in Bilborough in 1855. (I am having difficulty in finding John's baptism or proving his parentage. For this reason I have taken nearly all the census entries from Notts. 1841onwards in order to make family groups and see if I can find the movement of the families. There are many Cutts family groups in the N. Notts area which lead back to Mansfield and then over the Derbyshire border towards N. Wingfield. I am currently looking at Wills and Land documents to see if I can find where the Cutts may have been living in the Arnold area in 1777/9.) >From John Cutts and Ann Bennell the direct line is as follows: John Cutts b.20.11.1801 Radford m. 3.6.1827 Radford to Mary Butler. (parents of Thos.Butler Cutts, Lace Mfr of Malvern House, Nottingham. 1828-1886). John Cutts b.4.6.1830 Radford m. 10.2.1850 Radford to Elizabeth Staton Thomas Butler Cutts b.14.6.1856 Radford m. 22.4.1878 Ebenezer Chapel Prim.Meth. Nottm. to Lizzie Gothard Maud Mary Cutts b.6.3.1881 Nottingham m.12.6.1905 Holy Trinity to William Cunnington Gillott (my grandparents).. Mavis searching Cutts in Notts. and Derbys.

Their mums name was Joan, and they lived in the Edgware Middx area., Their fathers name escapes me for the moment, but he passed away some 20 years ago. Joan was about 77years of age, and Raymond who is the eldest child is 53ish Any help would be greatly recieved and i shall pass on anything found. Thanks for your time Tracey

    1. Fw: [CUTTS] Roll Call
    2. Peter Cox
    3. To answer Lesley's Roll Call.... My Cutts are from Harthill, and link to Brian Berrington's Lavinia line. My mother is a Whitwell Walker, the daughter of a farmer whose line originated from Harthill. The Cutts begin with an Alice, who married George Pearce on 29 Jan 1787. Their daughter Mary marries a farming Walker in Harthill (actually Woodall-by-Harthill) which didn't have a church of its own). Alice was born at Harthill on 6 April 1763. Her parents were - George Cutts and Mary Ellis, who married on 17 May 1751 at Wodworth. George was born at Harthill on 31 Jan 1731, son of Robert Cutt and Ann Beaumont, who'd married there on 30 Nov 1726. This Robert was probably the son of the Robert Cutt who married Rosamund Harwood on 5 May 1698, but his birth isn't in the Harthill register. He in turn is probably the son of Robert Cutt and Dorothy Kidder, who were married there on 14 July 1676, and from his age at death (77 in 1677) appears to have been born in 1699/1700. All these Cutts were shoemakers. The first Cutt(s) appearance in Harthill was Robert's marriage in 1676, and the big question is where he came from. We're looking for someone born between c 1635 and 58, perhaps the son of a shoemaker. 1. [CUTTS] FW: Roll Call, Lavinia Cutts
    2. Brian Berrington
    3. My interest is in the family of Lavinia Cutts. My g.g. Grandmother was Lavinia Cutts, who married Robert Berrington in Wollaton Church, Notts on 21/11/1821. A record of the marriage is in the IGI, however the birth of Lavinia Cutts recorded in the IGI in Pinxton in 1798 was not the same Lavinia Cutts. The Pinxton Lavinia was the daughter of John Cutts and Elon Rowland and I now know that she came to Stoke-on-Trent with her father and mother when John Cutts left Pinxton Pottery to join Wedgwood in 1812/13. She appears in the 1881 census, unmarried and living with an unmarried niece, Ellen, in Lichfield Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Robert Berrington was born in Kegworth in 1795 and was a licensed Victualler in Long Row Nottingham at the time he married "my" Lavinia Cutts, by 1824 he had moved to another inn in Ripley Derbys where my Grandfather Robert II was born. In the late 1820s the family moved to Stoke-on-Trent where Robert was landlord of the Albion Hotel in Hanley and then the Legs of Man, a coaching Inn in Burslem. Nothing is known of him after1840 by which time he and Lavinia had had 6 children. Lavinia Berrington cannot be found in the 1841 census although a daughter and a son were in lodgings in Cobridge (Burslem). In1851 she was recorded as a widow living in Grange Road Cobridge and she was still alive in 1871 when she was beneficiary in her brother William's probate. William Cutts was a widower and retired master stockiner, he died without issue and intestate in the Holy Trinity Hospital Retford his only relative being his sister, Lavinia Berrington nee Cutts. >From census records, we now know that William's wife was Elizabeth and his mother Fanny, dates and ages tie up which has lead to the following suggested tree for "my" Lavinia Cutts:- George Cutts c. Harthill 31/1/1730 (father Robert); m. Mary Ellis 17/5/1751 at Wodworth by Doncaster; George c. Shirland 28/7/1751; m. Francis Herod 12/1/1778. John Herod c. Alfreton 3/9/1723 (father John); m. Francis Radford, Alfreton 20/9/1747; daughter Francis c. Blackwell by Alfreton 31/11/1756; m. George Cutt, Kirby-in-Ashfield 12/1/1778. George and Francis had at least 5 children:- Ann (Hannah) c. Shirland 17/4/1779; John c. Shirland16/4/1781; William c. Whitwell 9/8/1795, Fanny c. Whitwell 2/9/1798 and Lavina, abt 1793 in either Shirland or Whitwell.. Any confirmation of the date and place of "my" Lavinia's birth and suggestions or additions to the suggested tree would be appreciated, also why was Lavinia in the Wollaton area of Nottingham when she married Robert Berrington? Did George and Francis move there, what happened to her brother John? Any ideas please. Brian

    2. Mavis Johnson
    3. In 1861 census at Codnor/Loscoe there is a George Cutts, Widower, 83, b. Higham, Derbyshire. This makes his birth circa 1777. There is a George born 5 January 1777 at N.Wingfield son of Aaron and Mary Cutts (Cousins). He appears to have married 26.12.1809 to Fanny Mathew at North Wingfield. The IGI says that George and Fanny were at Bolsover abt 1814. I think this family may be the link between N.Wingfield and the spread of the families into the North Notts area. The males in the family of George and Fanny wee: Archer x 26.1.1810 George x 16.3.1819 Aaron x 19.9.1824 James x 4.4.1830 I have a pencilled note from another researcher that a James Cutts, Farmer of 10 acres was married to a Mary b.c.1832 from Smalley. Can anyone place this family? Mavis

    3. There were lace-making areas in Devon - particularly around Honiton. Ottery St. Mary is only about 5 miles from Honiton. Lace makers were known to have moved between Devon and Somerset and the East Midlands. Heathcoat moved his factory from Loughborough, Leics. to Tiverton, Devon around 1813. Scores of his workers walked to Tiverton to work for him. Tiverton is about 20 miles from Ottery St. Mary. One John Cutts was known to have worked for Heathcoat and smuggled his Old Loughborough lace making machine over to France circa 1815. !!

    3. Dear Margaret, Thank you for your reply to yesterday's e-mail. John and Catharine Housley (m.16.2.1834 Radford) had other children baptised at St. Marys, Nottingham:- George, 23.11.1834, Pierrepont St. Nottingham Harriett 8.5.1836, Kington St. Nottingham John 28.3.1837, Bridge St., Nottingham Ellen born 30.12.1838 at Earnshaw's Yd. off London Rd. Nottingham. m. George Ralph, 26.8.1860 Wolv.Reg.Off. both of Luke Street, Bilston at marriage. Mary Ann born Notts - 6 months old in 1841 census. I have not found John and Catharine in the 1851 census in Notts. James Cutts - via the Cutts List or direct at E-mail Address(es): [email protected] has taken all the GRO refs up to around the 1940s - try asking him first with all the information you can give to help him decide which is the marriage of John and Mary Carpenter circa 1859 Sometime the numbers may be mistranscribed - a book published last year told how many errors/omissions there are in the GRO refs.... Radford is about ten miles from Blidworth - but there was a movement from the country to the expanding town of Nottingham around this time for jobs/better housing, etc. Cutts are particularly difficult to trace in this respect...they had relatives on the canal boats so probably had easier transportation than most. It was Frances WHITE, not Wright, in Valerie's Cutts family. Frances White m. 21.10.1838 St. Marys to a John William Cutts, Fwk/Lace Daler/Master Tailor at death. It could be that John William was not the John bapt. Blidworth in 1814. I have looked at my Blidworth notes and see that there were two Johns baptised at Blidworth around this time. John son of George and Elizabeth Cutts, Fwk, Blidworth bapt. 26.11.1814 John son of Robert and Elizabeth Cutts, Fwk, Blidworth bapt. 19.2.1815 Marriage: Robert Cutts otp Fwk and Elizabeth Clark otp By Banns on 26.7.1814 at Blidworth Robert signed, Elizabeth marked, witnesses Samuel Lane and William Mellers. Possible Marriage George Cutts b.c. 1777 Chesterfield, m. Elizabeth Jackson on 8.11.1802 at Chesterfield this family moved via Mansfield St. Peters into Arnold, Nottingham. Other Cutts moved to Staffs Potteries - Brian Berrington on the list has Staffs. connections. I will copy your memos to the list so others can keep abreast of the names and places. I am afraid this is probably very confusing as it does not prove anything, but at least it gives more leads. Have you joined the Canal Lists at rootsweb? There have been some Ralphs listed recently which I forwarded to Alan Rafe. Come back to me if you think I can help you further. Good Luck. Mavis

    3. Rosina - just a wild card but an Elizabeth BUSKINGHAM was a witness to a wedding at Shirebrook in 1857 (see James Cutts' email of 26 May) I have found a marriage of an Edward Cutts to a Mary Cutts 17.5.1820 at St. Mary's, Nottingham. Edward is a very unusual name in the Cutts families so there is just a chance he may be related to your Edward born 1845 in Suffolk. Have you considered that they might have travelled along the canals? Good Luck Mavis.

Ellen appears to be his second wife. William Cutts age 3 (presumably Ellen's illegitimate son) is with them. In 1851 census, Ref 2127/283, John is a widower - born Bulcote. Ellen has died (post 1842) so we do not know her place of birth. William Cutts, 12, is a FWK born Basford. Charles Dring aged 10 and Hannah Dring aged 8 would appear to be Ellen's children by John. 3. Dear Cheryl, I will be putting my own Cutts family on the list shortly - I am under pressure at moment as I have been away. They were from Arnold, (1777)then Bilborough, Radford and Nottingham, all Notts. I have taken most of the Cutts census entries for Notts to further my own researches, and have compiled many families from these and parish registers - but as you know the only way to be sure is to get all the B/M/D certificates back to 1837 to make sure you are on the right track. A John Cutts m. Catherine Housley at Radford , Nottingham, on 16.1.1834 - their daughter Ellen Cutts b.30.12.1838 at Nottingham, married Charles Ralph 26.8.1860 at Wolverhampton Reg Office - they were both living at Luke St., Bilston....John described himself as a Lace Manufacturer on the M/C. He could possibly be your John and working on the canals? Since Mary was quite a bit younger than John it is likely she was a second wife. Valerie Stanley of Nottingham believes John Cutts baptised at Blidworth in 1814 married Frances White in 1838 at St. Mary's Nottingham and was her ancestor so you may hear from her direct. There are a plethora of John Cutts (mine included) who are very difficult to allocate to the right families - I have been looking for the parents of my John Cutts b.c. 1777 at Arnold for several years.....this was the start of my collecting family groups.... Hope this helps a little.
