I am trying to trace my mother's father who is given on her birth certificate as Alfred Cutts, a master butcher of Carshalton, Surrey. My mother, Audrey Mary Emmett, was born in 1928 and her original birth certificate gave Alfred as the father and my grandmother, Grace Charlotte "Cutts", as her mother. Two years later the birth certificate was amended to remove Alfred as the father and to change my grandmother's name back to her maiden name, Grace Charlotte Emmett on the basis of an affidavit sworn by my grandmother and her elder brother. My mother and her late brother David were, in fact, both illegitimate but apparently of the same father, presumably Alfred Cutts. It was something that was never discussed when my grandmother, a devout Baptist, was still alive, but now my mum's beginning to get on in years she would dearly love to know anything about her father. I have just received the marriage certificate of my great grandmother "Sarah CUTTS" to "Samuel DANDY". In case it may be of interest to anyone, the details are below. If anyone can add to the information I have, I will be really grateful. Marriage at St Phillips Church in the Parish of Birmingham in the County of Warwick on 27 October 1851 between Samuel DANDY age 21 Batchelor occ Caster and Sarah CUTTS age 21 Spinster. Both living at Northwood Street (no number given). Samuel's father was Thomas DANDY a Carter and Sarah's father was John CUTTS an Iron Worker. Witnesses were Jane NORTHWOOD and Joseph NILSON (could be WILSON) the first letter is very indistinct. Both parties were from Staffordshire and were living in Staffordshire on the 1881 Census, so I think it could be possible that they were staying with someone in Birmingham while the banns were read. I still have to prove this last statement. Best Wishes June

Hi List, >From Margaret Owen, I am still here on the list & I have found more information on John CUTTS. I just received John CUTTS & Mary CARPENTER marriage certificate. Marriage April 20 1851 Parish Church, St Mary's Nottingham to Mary CARPENTER. John CUTTS: widower-- full age--occ: Traveller. Father Robert CUTTS occ: There was three initials: (they were either T.H.R or J.K.R or Y.K.R (anybody have any idea what occupation this would be). Mary CARPENTER: spinster--full age. Father Richard CARPENTER occ: Labourer. Witness's at the marriage were ?Anie Hallam & Samuel CUTTS (possible John's brother) Mary was born in Ottery St Mary Devon about 1829-30-31. John & Mary's children were: Elizabeth b:1859----William R b:1860----& May Louise Florence CUTTS (My gt grandmother) b:1868. All born in BilstonWolverhampton Staffordshire. John's occupation at that time was Master Haberdasher/Self Employed. So John's first wife still may have been Catherine HOUSELEY 1834(Feb16) St Peter's Radford, Nottingham. Children were George b:Nov23 1834--- Harriet b:May8 1836--- John b:Mar28 1837---Ellen b:Dec30 1838 m: Aug26 1860 Wolverhampton Registry Office to George RALPH----& Mary Ann CUTTS b: 1840 all born in Nottingham. I would think that Catherine CUTTS died before 1851 in Nottingham. Then John CUTTS moved to Staffordshire where he married Mary CARPENTER. I was not sure who John's parents were (George CUTTS/Elizabeth JACKSON from Chesterfield moved via Mansfield St Peter's into Arnold Nottingham or Robert CUTTS/Elizabeth CLARK married 1814(July26) Blidworth. So the latter is probably John's Parents Robert & Elizabeth!!!!! I would presume that the baptisms of John CUTTS Nov 26 1814 would be right???? Can anyone add information to any of these names, I would really like to hear from you. We could be related in someway. Regards Margaret, Ontario Canada

I feel there must be a familial connection between these families although as yet do not have anything concrete. Sarah was born at Bilston c.1830 and there is a John H. I do have a note that John Cutts b.c. 1814 at Blidworth, Notts. was married 20.4.1851 Nottingham St. Mary to a Mary Carpenter b.c. 1830 in Ottery St. Mary, Devon. ( He was described as a General Dealer and Master Haberdasher - not too far removed from Lace Manufacturing * - see below - which may have been going through a slump) . This would appear to be a second marriage for John and it may well be that his first marriage was to someone from the Bilston area and he settled there. Margaret at [email protected] is researching this family and may by now have more information. OR A John Cutts m. Catherine Housely at Radford Nottingham on 16.1.1834 and their daughter Ellen b.30.12.1838 at Nottingham married Charles Ralph 26.8.1860 at Wolverhampton Reg. If you (or Jim Cutts who has all the GRO extracts) can locate a death for Catherine Cutts in Bilston pre 1851 this would help prove this. Some of the Cutts worked on the canals which would account for them settling in different areas.
