Edensor Village is within the park of Chatsworth House and I presume that Bartholomew must have worked for the Duke of Devonshire in some capacity, even if only as an ag.lab!. Edensor: Bartholomew Cutts buried 2 October 1737 Mavis

His father and my great grandfather were brothers. The book states that my family is descended from Richard Cutts Esq of Grondale Abbey Arkeden, Essex.Richard supported Cromwell and encouraged his sons to go to America . In 1646 they settled in Strawberry Bank a section of New Hampshire. Later a brother Robert who is my relative and sister Anne came to America and he died a wealthy man in Kittery ME. I am ninth generation from Robert. : I would reccomend the book by Bing Spitler. :

I wonder whether you may know: GENALOGY OF THE CUTTS FAMILY IN AMERICA, Compiled by Cecil Hampden Cutts Howard; Albany, NY, Joel Munsell's Son's, Publishers, 1892. To my knowledge it has not been reprinted. If it is not in a library near you, I feel certain that it is in the NEHGS lending library, possibly in the NGS lending library, as well. As I recall, it is strongest on Cuttses in New England and New York State, but has some coverage of other parts of the country, as well. Merlin

    3. Dear All, Do you believe in ghosties in Family History research who just happen to pop up to point a finger when you are least expecting it? As I glanced down the earlier message (below) I had sent to you the name JOSLAND jumped out at me and I just knew I had seen it over the last couple of days whilst I had been looking in London areas for Francis Coutts and Sons - Acetopathic Practitioners of 34 Mecklenburgh Sq., St. Pancras, also 21 Hide Road, Ardwick, Manchester, and 65 Bath Street, Glasgow, all in 1876, and found Francis Coutts himself aged 75, at Largs, Ayr, Scotland, all as intimated in the Melbourne (Aus) Directory of 1876. I then scanned the Neighbours facility to find other Cutts/Coutts in the same area and found many, the following amongst them which is pertinent to your family line: Dwelling: 24 Albany St. Census Place: St Pancras, London, Middlesex, England Source: FHL Film 1341038 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 0179 Folio 43 Page 6 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Elizabeth JOSLAND U 45 F Exeter, Devon, England Rel: Head Occ: Milliner Susan JOSLAND W 79 F Exeter, Devon, England Rel: Mother Occ: Milliner Sarah CUTTS M 40 F Exeter, Devon, England Rel: Sister Occ: Dressmaker Arthur G. CUTTS U 10 M Islington, Middlesex, England Rel: Nephew Occ: Scholar Emily HENDERSON U 18 F Strand, Middlesex, England Rel: Serv Occ: General Servant -------- This seems to give you Sarah Jemima Josland , the wife of George Wheatley Cutts b.c. 1851 at West Retford who married in 1870 at St. James, Westminster (do not know exact date) and emigrated to Australia in 1882 presumably with her son Arthur G. aged 11, born Islington in 1871. There may be another coincidence in that Emily Henderson, 18, their servant, could be related to John and Annie (nee Henderson) Coutts living at 34 Mecklenburgh Sq. in 1881, along with Annie's sister Elizabeth Henderson, companion, Unmarried aged 33. I am sure you have the 1881 Census CDs so you can follow these through for yourself. This family of Acetic Practitioners originated in Scotland and travelled to Queensland, returned to London and Manchester and had connections with Nottinghamshire.... Please come back to me with anything you can add to the above. 1. [CUTTS] CUTTS in USA
    2. Nearly all the information I have about the Cutts family in America is to be found in Stackpole, Everett S, Old Kittery and her Families, Lewiston, Maine, 1903; reprinted Somersworth, New Hampshire, New England History Press, 1981, 1985. Brothers John and Richard Cutt[s] settled in Strawberry Bank (now Portsmouth, New Hampshire) before 1646. Whether they came directly from England, or via the West Indies is not known, nor is there record of marriage or children. A few years later, their brother, Robert came from the West Indies and settled in Kittery, Maine, on the east bank of the Piscataqua, across from Strawberry Bank. He owned a shipyard in Kittery. His wife was Mary Hoel, daughter of a C of E priest, whom he had married in the West Indies. He had two sons, Richard and Robert. Richard married in 1686 Joanna, daughter of Thomas and Lucy (Treworgy) Wills of Kittery. Among their twelve children was Thomas, born 16 April 1700, married, 23 April 1724, Dorcas, daughter of Judge Joseph and Hannah (Storer) Hammond. Thomas died 10 January 1795, Thomas and Dorcas had a son, Robert, born 19 September 1734, who married, 18 November or 21 December 1758, Lydia (born 1 January 1740), daughter of Joseph and Mary (Fernald) Fernald. Robert (son of Robert) married, 18 April 1698, Dorcas Hammond, daughter of Maj, Joseph and Katherine (Frost) Hammond (Aunt of Dorcas, wife of Thomas Cutts). I am unable to identify the other individuals mentioned. I hope this is some help. Merlin
