Hi List, I have been asked about "CUTTS" & "COUTTS" in Australia. There appear to be slightly more "COUTTS" than "CUTTS". To give you an example I looked at the Victorian Pioneer Index (1836-1888) which does show the "Place of Birth" for marriages & deaths up to about the early 1880's. After this period the "Place of Birth" is omitted and you only get it if you purchase the full birth Certificate. CUTTS are shown as born in England, India & the USA (plus various Australian States) whereas COUTTS are shown as born in Scotland, England (less than in Scotland) & Germany (plus various Australian States). There are also some "CUTT", but one has to remember that the clerk who wrote down the name often wrote it as he heard it and I have found some families have children shown with the Surnames spelt both ways. Hi All, Thanks very much to all those who sent me a "Welcome" email. My Great Grandfather was Henry Vincent BUTTERWORTH who was a ship's carpenter. In Australia he always went by the name "William" which was the name of his youngest brother and we believe that he "took" that name because he "jumped ship" along with the captain and other officers. We have nothing to prove this storey but to date I have not been able to find any shipping records of his arrive or ID him on any "Ships Deserter's List". He arrived in Australia between 1881 (he is shown on the 1881 UK Census) and 1888 (when he) married Ester (Asa Esther) CUTTS. Ester was born 1858 at Sandhurst (now called Bendigo), Victoria having grown up on the Bendigo Goldfields. They only had the one child - William Henry Vincent BUTTERWORTH. Ester's parents were Thomas CUTTS & Esther THOMPSON. They married 7 Dec 1857 in Victoria, Australia. Thomas was born 24 Jan 1836, Chr. 21 Feb 1836 at Brimington, Derby, England and Esther was born 6 Nov 1836 at Queens County, Ireland. Thomas & Ester had 12 children. Recently John Frawley, another member of the list, found details of a William Henry Cutts, (1828-1897) who arrived in Melbourne in the KENT in September 1852, went to the Ovens (Beechworth) goldfield and later to BENDIGO!! where he practiced medice but also pursued the profitable occupation of gold buyer for the banks. Wm. Henry was born at Chesterfield, son of John Cutts, solicitor, and his wife Mary Holehouse, married c. 1820s..........presumably near Chesterfield. He died in London 3.7.1897. (William's first wife Jane Thorpe (no other details) died and c.1895 he married Isabelle Rathie, educated at Edinburgh, Matron at Melbourne Hospital in 1890. Ashover is a modern hall, with a large car park, well placed for visiting Matlock and the new Derwent Valley Heritage Site, which affords many interesting activities for any family members who do not wish to spend the day 'digging up the dead'! My last post referred to my Cutt family from Orkney. The parents'farm was small; it was hard to find enough work to support a family, and my great-grandfather John Cutt and his wife Jane were having babies every two years...he worked as a labourer on the roads and on the farms...and then a doctor (former employer?) who ran an asylum in Edinburgh, offered John the job of gatekeeper there. John Cutt and wife Jane left Orkney for Edinburgh in 1881 with 6 children. Five more were born in the little gatekeeper's cotttage there. It appears to have been begun by others (census takers, for instance.). Boat passenger lists? (It may have been originally pronounced 'cut', very short and sharp, bringing a slight ss sound at the end.) I saw what remained last summer -- a pile of rubble. However, a wonderful elderly gentleman who lived up the hill told me tales of the Cutts and what became of them. He remembered Hugh, the youngest, and knew where they were all buried. From a great website : www.cursiter.com I obtained a text file listing all the IGI birth & chr data for Cutts in Orkney, Caithness & Shetland. From the 1881 census cds I have copied off all Cutt data, and I have also attempted to get as much as I can from 1891 census material. (I have had in my mind to do a one-name study "some day".......) Hello List-- My grandmother was born Jemima Cutt. Her father's family was from the Orkney Islands. I was always told that a Danish fisherman wrecked his boat on or near Orkney, and that that is how the Cutt family got there. Specifically, the Cutt name appears to have originated on Sanday, oneof the Orkney Islands. My great-grandfather moved his large family to Edinburgh in the 1880's, and some time after that some members of the family started calling themselves 'Coutts'. I did notice that my great-uncle Robert is listed on the 1891 Census of Orkney as Robert Cutts (with the 's'). Are these names similar to anyone else's or am I on the wrong list??
