    1. [CUTTS] CUTTS get together 22nd September
    2. John
    3. The Cutts get together venue has been changed to now take place at, The Peacock Hotel, Oakerthorpe and this is now firmly booked for Sunday 22nd September, this has now removed any costs for the hall as the Peacock Hotel function room is provided free of charge a better situation than incurring costs that would have had to involve a head cost for those attending, there may still be a small cost for any speakers that we hope to engage if we can contact any that are available, your recommendations for these are requested and please forward their contact addresses, telephone or E-mail details to the list or myself so that they may be approached for availability. Your ideas for any other events to take place on the day, displays, material, items of interest then feel free to submit these as it will serve to make the event a interesting one. More details of the venue will be submitted to the list very soon as they become more clear as will the details of location and travel details for those not knowing where The Peacock Hotel is located, for the moment to give some idea it is very close to Alfreton and convenient to the M 1 Motorway via junction 28. So now we know that it is a firm date and place lets get together to make it a good one. John Frawley Derby. [email protected]

    3. The get-together for anyone researching Cutts has been arranged for SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22 2002 at Ashover, Derbyshire Village Hall. (times and details to be sent nearer the event) The response from the message sent at the end of June was disappointing. However the booking of the hall has to be confirmed very shortly and thought I would send a reminder for anyone who now would like to attend. Would anyone who is interested, including everyone who expressed an interest before, please confirm that they will be attending on the 22nd. There will be a small charge however to cover the hire of the hall. Regards Lesley [email protected]

    3. Dear fellow Cutts researcher, I saw your message on the list and as I do not know where to find Pair, France, wonder if this is in the Calais or Lille areas? We do know that a John Cutts from Nottingham went over to France at the time of Napoleonic Wars taking with him one of the first mechanical lace-making machines... Can you send more details - I know a lady who is researching the Notts=Calais=Australia lacemaking links. I am also in touch with another American lady researching a Cutts family connected with the above and she has a Catherine in her family!!! We mightall be able to help each other. Regards, Mavis,

    1. [CUTTS] Was Cutts a short name for Cuthbert?
    2. Mavis Johnson
    3. Dear fellow lister, Thank you for your detailed information about the early Cuttes/Cutts. We certainly knew of these early Cutts but you have added a few more details. As you know, we are trying to find connections between the various groups of Cutts families and their movements abroad. It is evident that some of them used the variation 'Coutts' I am working on a theory that many of them would have worked on/for some of the landed gentry as grooms, bailiffs, tradesmen, etc. and this is how they met their partners and also how they had contacts in other areas of the country. (Many of them originate in the areas surrounding Rufford Park, Thoresby Hall, Welbeck Abbey, and Hardwick Hall, Bolsover Castle etc. Evidence shows that early Cutts were in Kedleston and Chatsworth also) If you have any evidence which supports this I should be pleased to hear from you. I have found families of Cutts from different areas living in the St. Pancras area in the 1881 census and wonder why/how they were drawn to the Big City and if they knew each other. e.g. By a VERY convoluted route I have found that Elizabeth Cutts, Widow, 75, b. (East) Bridgeford, had connections with my own Cutts family in Nottingham. But it only leads to more questions............. Regards, Mavis, in Somerset, researching all the Cutts families in East Midlands - and beyond..

He was one of Henry VIII's faithful servants and acted as Under Treasurer of England to the King. The tower of Horam Hall was used by Elizabeth for a short while during her attempt to keep out of her sister Mary's way. He also had a manor built at Childerly in Cambridgeshire. By 1670 the name had changed its spelling and the Cutte was recorded as Cutts. It is recorded in some sources that William de Cutte came across from France with the invasion of William the Conqueror and for his services was granted "all the lands of Thaxted in Essex" Other sources hold out on the Cuthbert theory. The earliest recording of the name I can find is Cutus de Lincoln 1273 and Rudlophus Cutte 1379. By the way my grandmother was Mildred Mary Cutts from Essex. (There is an oriel window in Horam Hall which has a coat of arms and a record of the marriages of the early Cutte family members) >
