His body was finally entombed in Durham Cathedral in the Middle Ages, making it a popular pilgrimage site. Many followers would have named sons after him on both sides of the border, in northern England (Northumberland & Durham) and in the south of Scotland. When surnames became used, "son" would have been added to descendants of anyone named Cuthbert.
