Tom, I spent a bit of time and a very few $$$ on the Scotland's People website and found some info. Most importantly (to me) I verified "Margaret Tod Cuthbertson Strachan" widow of Robert Strachan, who died at North Leith, Midlothian, on January 13, 1911, age 84 years. Her parents are listed as Robert Cuthbertson, quarryman, and Helen Riddel. I found a census entry for Robert (age 30) & Margaret (age 26 -- i.e. born ca. 1825) Strachan at South Leith, Midlothian, in 1851, with Helen Cuthbertson , age 53, born in Glassford, Lanarkshire, visiting. The Strachans had two children, the second just a month old, so granny had probably come to help out. Helen is listed as "married" so I'd guess she was not yet widowed. I checked the entry for Robert Cuthbertson at Beith with his brother David's family, and it lists him as married! (I'd not previously checked the original entry for that detail.) The entry does not indicate if he was "visiting" or whatever. The 1841 Census has Robert Cuthbertson (age 44) and Helen (age 44) Cuthbertson at Springburn in Glasgow with children James (age 23), John (age 18), Robert (looks like 44, but maybe 14?), Janet (age 12), Helen (age 9), William (age 7), David (age 5). The entry lists ALL born in Lanarkshire (which would be wrong if it's the Robert from my family), etc. There is no Margaret listed, but she might have been hired out as a servant by that age. The entry lists his occupation as "S.M." possibly "stonemason"? (1841 unfortunately doesn't have a lot of info, and is often off on exact ages.) And, I found the marriage banns of Robert Cuthbertson of Glassford and Helen Riddell of East Kilbride for February 2, 1817. Glassford is about 2 miles east of Strahaven. In my estimation, the information about Margaret Tod Cuthbertson Strachan is the bit that ties the package together. It would be very odd of her to have that name, and a father who was a quarryman if she weren't the daughter of our Robert. And the info. otherwise seems to fall mostly into place with what you have. The biggest loose end is to confirm that the family at Springburn in 1841 is the right Robert & Helen Cuthbertson.... which confirmation may be via your records. All the best, Ken Cuthbertson In a message dated 1/26/2009 3:58:48 A.M. Mountain Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Hello Listers, I write from the State of Victoria, Australia. I am seeking further information on the family of my great great grandmother, Janet Cuthbertson. It is suspected that she had little education, and therefore all following spellings, and age calculations are approximate. Some jottings in the family state that she was born 31 May, 1830 at/near Strathaven Lanarkshire, Scotland, daughter of James Cuthbertson, who died at Thornibank (Thornliebank?), 3 September 1850, and his unidentified wife, who died at Pollockshaws on 7 January, 1852. Janet’s marriage certificate from 4 February 1856, on the Ballaarat Goldfield, states that she was 23, a spinster, a servant, born at Strathaven, Lanarkshire, Scotland, that her mother was Ellen Riddle, and that her father was Robert Cuthbertson, a quarryman. I know from another document that she already had an infant son, named Robert, probably born on 11 May 1855. I notice that at www.familysearch.org a Robert Cuthbertson marries a Helen Riddell at Glassford, Lanarkshire 2/2/1817 – info from a film. Given Janet’s accent, literacy, and the occasion, one suspects that Helen Riddell became Ellen Riddle on Janet’s marriage certificate. On the above website, LDS members have submitted that Robert and Helen had christened James 3/9/1817 at Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Margaret Tod, c.1827 …… Lanarkshire, William Brownli, 13/51834 at Glassford, and David, 16/3/1836 at Glassford. The ten year gap between the christening of James and Margaret is interesting. Janet is listed as a 23 year old on the passenger list for the “Storm Cloud” which arrived in Port Phillip Bay (for Geelong and Melbourne) in December1854 from the U.K. Also on board was one other Cuthbertson, a James, aged 37. Family lore has it that Janet emigrated with her brother (name unknown) but that she lost contact with him during the gold rushes (not difficult!) and that she never saw him again. One suspects from the shipping list, the name and the age, that the James on board was her brother. Janet named her children Robert, John Allison (or Ellison), David Maund, Alfred, Janet and Agnes. Her husband’s name was John Hastings. Janet died in the State of Victoria, Australia, in July, 1914, “aged 84”. I have not yet tried to search the 1841 and 1851 census records for Scotland to extend my knowledge of Janet and James, but could do so in due course.
