A distant cousin in Australia is trying to track an ancestral uncle: James Cuthbertson, son of Robert Cuthbertson and Ellen Riddeles/Helen Riddel, James Cuthbertson, born 9-3-1817 at Glassford, Lanarkshire. He seems to have gone out to Australia at the same time as his sister Janet in 1854. Family lore indicates that she emigrated with her brother, but lost contact with him during the gold rushes and never saw him again. Both James Cuthbertson, age 37, and Janet Cuthbertson, age 23, appear on the passenger list of the “Storm Cloud” which arrived in Port Philip Bay (for Geelong and Melbourne) in December 1854. He is described as a quarryman on the ship list. Records show that a James Cuthbertson, a miner from Lanarkshire, died at Carngham (near Ballerat) on 8 March 1859. (Age listed as 45, but info. otherwise matches what is known.) My cousin has come across two others from the Victorian records. The information concerns: 1. The James Cuthbertson who married Jessie Watson at Spring Hill, Pentland Hills, Victoria Australia on 22 November 1859 came from North Sunderland, England, with parents George Cuthbertson, a fishmonger, and Elizabeth Wattles. 2. James Cuthbertson, age 34, who died on 1 July 1855, on a ship the K???? (Kunzi??) which had left Calcutta in June and arrived in Hobson’s Bay in 12th September. Harry Weldon Cuthbertson was born February 1, 1892 to parents Thomas (b.1847) and Georgia (b.1848) in Missouri. He had two sisters, Nora (b.1885) and Margie (b.1887). Harry married Rose Brown (born October 5, 1892) in about 1920 and they had at least one child, William H. Cuthbertson (born about 1926 in Ohio). Harry Cuthbertson died June 20, 1968 and his wife Rose on March 1, 1989. I am a trained historian and collect old documents and letters which I regularly try to reconnect with living family members for a small fee. I remember my father speaking of Rose. He also talked about Frances Reece, Will's boys. I barely knew any of them. My understanding is that Will and Rose lived on the original land near Rison. A member of the family in North Carolina did a huge amount of research and published a book. My brothers (they live in Warren) and I have a copy. I live in Minnesota but will be in Warren some time late summer/fall after I'm retired. Do you live in Pine Bluff? Linda Pledger Green married into the Cuthbertson/Green family and has also done lots of research on us. If you are interested, I think I can track down how to contact her. If Frances is still alive, I would love to visit her. I wonder if any of the family have photos, letters, etc. We do have some pictures. Briefly, the book records that our Cuthbertson line is Scot Irish and came around 1743. They ended up in Mecklenburg County, NC where our relatives still live. Our direct ancestors came to Rison in 1853 - William Julius and Lurena McSwain Cuthbertson. Will and Cleve had other (brothers - Duncan, Stanfield, and ? and sisters Belle, Minnie, one more?). I am trying to find three girls named Pam?, Jacqueline and Roslyn QUINN, who were all born in Queensland, Australia. Their parents were John Noel QUINN and Imelda Mary (nee EDWARDS) who were probably married in Newcastle Upon Tyne, which is where John was born in December 1926. John served in the Royal Navy from September 1944 to December 1947 and then transfered to the Royal Australian Navy in August 1948 where it was noted that his wife was Imelda Mary nee EDWARDS. One of John's sisters Martha, married William E BRANSBY and another Joan, married a CUTHBERTSON (I think his name may have been Donald). My CUTHBERTSON is Hugh, born in Scotland. He married Mary McCANDLISH whose father was Thomas and mother was Jean. Since Mary was born 5 Mar 1803 but baptized in Twynholm, Kirkcudbright, Scotland on 17 Apr 1803, I figure Hugh was born perhaps in the late 1700s. I'm trying to find the names of Hugh's parents as well as Hugh's dates of birth, marriage, and death. I thought I had found his birth in the 1841 Scotland census, but was wrong. The dates of the children don't match the dates I have for them, so my Hugh is not the one in the 1841 census whose birth was listed as about 1796 (and the year seemed so promising). Hugh may have died before the census was taken in 1841. I've been told he also lived in Kilmarnoch, Ayrshire. The first child of Hugh and Mary was Thomas CUTHBERTSON, born 12 Jan 1822 in Klymorme, Ayr, Scotland. I wonder if Klymorme is a misspelling for KILMAURS. Thomas came to Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. 4 years earlier than his mother and siblings did. He came on the ship Leader on 26 June 1844. (I have not yet verified the name of the ship and have not yet tried looking for U.S. Citizenship papers or Naturalization for Hugh's son Thomas.) Hugh's wife (Mary) sailed on the Tamerlane from Glasgow to Boston in 1848 with all her children except Thomas. She listed her occupation as a domestic so had to have been widowed by then if not before the 1841 census. This query is a shot in the dark, but maybe someone has some Scotland info on Hugh Cuthbertson. Any help is appreciated.
