reply to e-mails sent by (a) [email protected] and (b) [email protected] A James Cuthbertson's marriage to a Catherine MacKay is recorded on my family tree. This was drawn-up for my grandmother--Bethia Tate Cuthbertson--on 17th October 1913. James had two older brothers, Alexander and Robert, and a younger sister, Margaret. His father was Robert Cuthbertson, (I do not know the name of his mother) who had an elder brother Alexander*. His grand-parents were James Cuthbertson and Barbara Mason who married in 1777 at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh. James and Catherine had seven children; Twins Robert and Malcolm, Janet, Margaret, Alexander, Elizabeth and Kate. From hereon, I know only that Robert married Ann Dunn and they had nine children; Marian, Malcolm, Jean, James, Kate, Robert, Jenny, Margaret and Alexander. Marian, the eldest, married a 'Marchbank' and they had three children; William, Ann and Helen. I am descended from the Alexander noted thus*, who married Margaret Fairbairn in 1813? also in St Cuthberts, and who in turn had eleven children. My grandmother was the daughter of the tenth child, David Pollock Cuthbertson, who married Beathia Brown Tait in 1859. My grandmother (one of nine children)married into the Corlett's of the Isle of Man, as did her eldest sister. Hope the above is of some interest. i realize that this is late, as yesterday was march 20, but re st cuthbert i found a tremendous site. the following link takes you to "the medieval sourcebook" and a work (translated by j.a. giles) written by Bede on the life of st cuthbert. for those of you who are unfamiliar with him, Bede was a very important writer, historian and intellectual of the 7th century. enjoy! http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/bede-cuthbert.html

Hello all, Thanks to "foggin" for the posting. Cuthbert had been a monk at the Celtic monastery of Melrose, which preceeded the medieval Catholic Melrose Abbey in the Scottish borders. He later worked in Pictish territories up near Glamis, where the late Queen Mother's family originated. At Lindisfarne he liked to stand in the sea and pray, until he nearly suffered hypothermia. The sea otters would come back to his hut to keep him warm afterwards. Most importantly, his feast day is March 20, and this is one of those years when March 20 is also the Vernal Equinox. Here is the collect used at Durham Cathedral, where his body is buried, on his feast day: "Almighty God, who didst call thy servant Cuthbert from keeping sheep to follow thy Son and to be a shepherd of thy people, mercifully grant that we, following his example and caring for those who are lost, may bring them home to thy fold, through thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen." So, have a happy St. Cuthbert's Day! If we don't, who will? Ken Cuthbertson Albuquerque, NM, USA

His body was finally entombed in Durham Cathedral in the Middle Ages, making it a popular pilgrimage site. Many followers would have named sons after him on both sides of the border, in northern England (Northumberland & Durham) and in the south of Scotland. When surnames became used, "son" would have been added to descendants of anyone named Cuthbert.
