Small Business family crests heraldry Coat of Arms & Family Crests Store Cuthbertson Family Crest / Cuthbertson Coat of Arms Cuthbertson Family Crest / Cuthbertson Coat of Arms CUTHBERTSON was a baptismal name 'the son of Cuthbert' a north of England font name. St. Cuthbert (c635-687) was the Anglo-Saxon churchman and missionary, born probably in Lauderdale in the Scottish borders (then part of Northumbria). In 651 he was a shepherd boy there, and while watching his flock by night had a vision which made him resolve to become a monk. The same year he entered the monastry of Old Melrose and in 660 accompanied its abbot, St. Eata, to a new foundation in Ripon. He travelled widely in the north of England as a missionary and many miracles were reported. In 684 he was visited by the Ecgfrith, king of Northumbria, who entreated him to accept the bishopric of Hexham. He reluctantly complied, but thirsting after solitude at the end of two years he returned to a hermit's cell he had built, where he died. His fame during his life was great, but it became greater after his death, and many churches were named after him. His feast day is 20th March. Other early! instances include William Cudbriht, 1273 County Cambridge. Johannes Cuthbrid was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Ridley Cuthbertson and Ann Maria Dickson were married at St. George's, Hanover Square, London in 1771. The name was borne by a 7th century bishop of Hexham, and later of Lindisfarne, and remained popular because of his cult throughout the Middle Ages, especially in North England and the lowlands of Scotland. The diminutive CUTHBE is rare and apparently confined to a small area on the Suffolk-Essex border. It first occurs in this form in the early 19th century; a century earlier the forms Cuthbert, Cutbee and Cutbie are all used of the same person. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. Registered at Rosshall, Aberdeen in the year 1750. It has long been a matter of doubt when the bearing of coats of arms first became hereditary and it was not until the Crusades that Heraldry came into general ! use. Men went into battle heavily armed and were difficult to recognis e. It became the custom for them to adorn their helmets with distinctive crests, and to paint their shields with animals and the like. Coats of arms accompanied the development of surnames, becoming hereditary in the same way. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His first wife was Mary Graham. Mary died in 1799. In some of the christening records for their children it noted that John was a native of Doddington. John remarried to Martha Seaton and the family is found living in Lowick when the 1841 English Census was taken. I also already have the christening and some burial records for the children from both unions. Any additional information/records would be greatly appreciated. Ken C, thanks, we have communicated before, the surnames is spelled both ways, and my middle name is Spier as well as my nephew, so the tradition continues and that is what interests me in my query, Gil -----Original Message----- From: ScotsCotNM <[email protected]> To: cuthbertson <[email protected]> Sent: Thu, Mar 13, 2014 10:35 am Subject: Re: [CUTHBERTSON] Hi I have the following, maybe there is some connection: James Cuthbertson, born ca. 1802 at Taponthank, Kilmarnock, and died 1869 at Yardside, Kilmaurs, age 67. He married Margaret Brown Speirs at Kilmaurs on 4 January 1859. She was born about 1830, and died in January 1919 at Yardside, age 89 or 91. This information comes from a line that we long thought was related to ours, but we have never found a link. The earliest record of this line is from Burnfoot in Fenwick. Given the date of your g-grandfather, and the spelling difference, I doubt any direct connection here, but who knows? Using the surnames of friends, in-laws, etc, for middle names seems to have been fairly common at one time. Ken C. In a message dated 3/13/2014 8:06:04 A.M. I use ScotlandsPeople but haven't had any success there except to find her all of her siblings and both parents. I knew who her sister was so could put the rest of the family together. ScotlandsPeople is a wonderful site and well worth the money which is minimal. I use to write letters to GROS to find records before ScotlandsPeople was available. Much easier and quicker with them and sometimes more information than from GROS. In some instances I have received better records from GROS with more information on them than ScotlandsPeople had. I do have correct spelling for Ardrossan. The Androssan was a typo but thanks for mentioning it. Never thought to look in the Saltcoats and the Stevenston records as I was unaware of the closeness of the towns. I will see what I can find in the Three Corners records. 1841 census does not give the birthplace. It wasn't until 1861 that her birthplace as given as Ardrossan. Couldn't follow the ages thru the census they were so far apart from census to census. I have her husband's birth record and their marriage record so that helped with the ages. The ScotlandsPeople website has many digitalized records of parish baptismal/marriage registers, wills, post-1855 civil registrations, etc., and the site is very searchable. I think the parish you mean is "Ardrossan" rather than "Androssan"? It is worth looking into the Saltcoats and Stevenston records as well since the "Three Towns" were almost one town-plex long since. There were some early ecclesiastical censuses (pre-1841) done by the local minister. I have the following, maybe there is some connection: James Cuthbertson, born ca. Hi Cec, I am working on Janet Cuthbertsons' family. She was b. 1815 in Ayrshire. Her parents were John Cuthbertson and Ann Grahram. Am trying to find an actual birth record for her. All census say she was b. in Cardross Parish, Dumbartonshire. That one indicated she was b. outside of Scotland and I cannot make out the name of the place. There is a 5 year difference between her parents marriage and her birth so I think she was not b. in Ayrshire or Dumbartionshire although all the other census report she was born in Dumbartonshire as were her brothers and sisters. She has been a mystery for a very long time. Was hoping I could connect with a Cuthbertson family who might have her in their family.
