The "Widow Nancy Curtis" is NOT the widow of Edward Curtis. Edward Curtis died without having married. The "widow Nancy Curtis" is a reference to his mother, Ann "Nancy" Curtis (d. 1824), widow of Lt. Thomas Curtis, Sr. (d. 1809), eldest son of Nathaniel Curtis (d. 1758) of Queen Anne's County, Maryland. James Curtis (c. 1775-c.1854) was the eldest brother of Edward Curtis. (Edward Curtis, by the way, died ca. 1818) Elijah Curtis is another brother of Edward and son of Thomas Curtis, Sr. This Elijah Curtis was born c. 1785. Be careful not to confuse him with his cousin Elijah Curtis (b. 31 Dec 1776- d. 24 May 1864), son of Nathaniel Curtis (k. 15 July 1780). This latter Elijah is the Elijah Curtis, Jr. of the 1800 Anson County, Census. He leaves Anson around 1808, moving to Stewart County, Tennessee. A few years later , sometime between 1815 and 1820 he moved from TN to Marengo Co., Alabama and then moved in the 1830's to nearby Sumter County Alabama and finally in 1854 he moved to what was then Choctaw County, Mississippi where he was buried in what is today present day Montgomery County, MS. Also, do not confuse either of these two cousins named Elijah with their Uncle Elijah Curtis, Sr. (d. 2 May 1818). Elijah Curtis Sr. is the Elijah Curtis Sr. of the 1800 Anson County, Census another of the sons of Nathaniel Curtis of Queen Anne's County, Maryland and the latter's wife, Susannah Thomas.. Thomas Curtis mentioned in your deed abstract is yet another brother of Edward Curtis. Thomas is a bit of a "mystery man" in that when his mother Nancy Curtis wrote her will in 1824 his "whereabouts" were unknown to her. Angus McRae is Edward's brother-in-law . Edward Curtis was probably named for his grandfather's patron, Edward Roe (d. 1748) of Queen Anne's County Maryland. ...Jay
