Feb. 14 - Joseph Curtis met instant death in mine no 4 at this place late yesterday afternoon by the fall of the slate. Will Wolf was also caught by the slate but escaped with a sprang ankle. The mine was crowded with workers at the time, and several rushed to the assistance of Curtis, but when his body was removed from the pile of slate, it was cold in death. The remains were taken to Lucas today for burial. His parents live at Lucas. I am not related to this person nor have any further information.

>From the 1820 census index: CURTIS ZENAS OH TRUMBULL FARMINGTON 1820 Given the location and name, this man could be a possible older relative, possibly Joel's father, grandfather or uncle? He was the only Zenas Curtis listed in the US census that year, and he was on the same page, all adjacent, as Ezra, Shelden and Ransley Curtis. A few names away, also on same page, is a David Curtis. Seem to be worth checking, if you haven't already. Of course, this could be a different family altogether - Zenas was not as uncommon a name in those days as it is today <smile>. ============================================== History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties with Illustrations and Biographical sketches. Cleveland: H.Z. Williams & Bro., 1882 It says that David Curtis, son of lawyer Curtis, was one of the first two arrivals in the twp. of Farmington in 1806 (was actually called Henshaw until it was organized in 1817), coming from Vienna Twp. In the summer of 1806 David or lawyer Curtis and Zenas Curtis, with a man named Elihu Moses, brought their families. David built on the old Ransley Curtis farm and Zenas on the Fuller farm on the State road. Ezra Curtis and Zenas were both elected to twp. offices in its first election in 1817. Have you searched the archives of the Trumbull Co. rootsweb list, or posted a query there? --- AFHILL@aol.com wrote: > I am searching for the parents of Joel Warner > Curtis who was born March 10, > 1818 in Ohio. > > Some records indicate the he was born in > Columbus, Ohio and some indicate > Trumbull County, Ohio. Hi, I am searching for the parents of Joel Warner Curtis who was born March 10, 1818 in Ohio. Some records indicate the he was born in Columbus, Ohio and some indicate Trumbull County, Ohio. I do not know which is correct. I have alot of information on his decendants but have been looking for years to find his parents. He names his first son Richard, he also named a son Zenas which is rather unusual an I thought might be a lead. Census information says that both of his parents were born in New York. My grandmother who was Joel's daughter kept journals about everyday happenings, the only note that refered to her fathers family was that he had a sister who died in New Jersey. If you can help me with any information, I would appreciate it. Thanks Alcie

There used to be a website for Curtis history. The URL no longer works. Does anyone know what happened to it? thanks
There is a very interesting Curtis family in Jennings Co, IN records and it appears no one is researching them. Born abt 1788 (say CT), William came to Jennings Co, IN bef 1818 and built a race track and horse farm. His spouse, Agnes, was born 1788 in Fulton Co, Johnstown, NY. William died bef 1830, but the farm and track lived on. Agnes lived until 1877 and their children took over ownership of the farm. Anyone interested, please email for details. There's been a good amount of history written on the family. Can't place him into any Curtis line. Thanks.
