Janice, Frederick's parents were John and Elizabeth (Lord) Curtiss. My records show John's death date as 22 June 1774 in Canterbury, Connecticut. There were several John Curtis(s)'s in that area and that time period. Your death date could possibly be for one of the others. John and Elizabeth had as children; 1)Israel, 2)Sarah, 3)John Jr., 4)Frederick and 5)Elizabeth Lord Curtiss. I have children for Frederick and Luranah as; 1)Isaac, 2)Luranah, 3)Hannah, 4)Filura and 5)Josiah. Rev. John Curtiss (Frederick's father) added the second "s" to the last name as those previous to him all spelled their last name with one "s". I have copies of land records from Connecticut that show the addition of the second "s". Not sure why this happened. Others from this line dropped the second "s" in later generations. My line continued with the second "s". I have nothing on Filura's (Philura) family other than her name and her birthdate of 17 July 1769 in Canterbury, Connecticut. I do have quite a bit of information on several other lines of the family if you are interested. Hope this helps. Charles Curtiss
I am descended from John Putnam (b. March 07, 1765) and Philura Curtis (b.July 17, 1769). They were married April 13, 1791 at Preston, CT. I'm certain Philura was the daughter of Frederick Curtis and Lurana Hyde (m. December 17, 1760 in Canterbury, CT). I'm searching for Frederick's parents. A World Family Tree has John Curtis and Elizabeth Lord. Lots of marriage records for them with the date October 31, 1728 in Wethersfield, CT. However, I also have a death date for John of October 31, 1727 in Canterbury CT. Something is very wrong with that! I'd be grateful for any information you may have. Janice
Hi John I am unable to tell who Sarah Curtis parent's are, but here is some information that may help in your search. Attached is a paper on Oliver Curtis 132.16 Of the Henry Curtis of Sudbury Line, also attached a copy of Oliver's Will. Sarah Danforth signed as a witness on Oliver's will. Sarah's marriage to Elijah Danforth is listed 4 times that I see, 2 times in Sutton and 2 in Worcester under Curtis and Danforth in both places, A show her as Sarah Curtis 2d and Elijah Danforth Nov 25 1790. I Guess 2d means 2nd Daughter?. several of Henry Curtis line in Worcester had A daughter named Sarah, John Curtis 132.2 - Samuel 132.11 - Ephraim 132.15 all had a Daughter named Sarah but information show's their Sarah's marrying someone else, but as I have found out that is not always accurate. I would suggest going to Worcester Co. and going through the deed's Under Elijah Danforth also Hampshire Co. for me the deed's were very useful in telling who was who. I also contacted the historian at the library in Pelham he was very helpful and sent me a map with Oliver Headstone location. On his stone it had his death date and age at death. Several of the cem. In Pelham are on computer, if Sarah died there he may have the stone location. if you are unable to download attachments let me know at stevenacurtis@earthlink.net good luck in your hunt. Steve Curtis Oliver 132.16 Oliver5, Ephraim4,3 , Joseph2 , Henry1 Oliver, (132.16) was born Jan. 29, 1740 in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, son of Ephraim and Mary (Rice) Curtis. [12a] [12B] Oliver's mother, Mary, died in Worcester, Massachusetts Dec. 1, 1745. [12] His father, Ephraim (132.1), died Jan 1, 1747/8. [12] Guardianship of Oliver along with his siblings, except Samuel who was of age, was given to his grandfather, Ephraim (132). [10a] Oliver's father's farm of 259 acres in Worcester, Worcester County was divided among Oliver and his siblings as shown in the subdivision map dated April 11, 1752 . This map showed Oliver's portion as 58 acres and 64 perch. [10a] It is recorded in Sudbury, that he married Mary Damon on April 7, 1763. [2], [2a] A son, William, was recorded born July 29, 1763 of this marriage in Worcester. [12] [12a] [12b] In the Massachusetts Evaluation List of 1771 he is listed as having one poll ratable, annual worth 1 pound, 10 shillings, one horse, no oxen, two cattle, three goats and sheep, one swine, two acres of tillage, 30 bushels of grain produced per year, 5 acres of fresh meadow and 5 tons of fresh meadow hay produced per year. [54] In 1773, the part of Worcester, Worcester County, where Oliver's farm was situated, along with a part of Leicester, Oxford and Sutton became South Precinct. On June 19 of that year, Oliver was chosen to work on Meeting house plans. [74a] [75a]. In 1775, Oliver Curtis was on the Worchester voting list for the south parish section as shown on records from Holy Cross College's Worcester Genealogy website. On April 10, 1778, South Parish was incorporated as the town of Ward, Worcester County. After incorporation in the first town meeting held on May 4, 1778 in the election of town officers Oliver Curtis was elected field driver. This occurred at the time that independence had been declared and preparations were ongoing for the hostilities and the hardships that occur with war. [74a] [75a] (On February 17, 1837 the name of the town of Ward was changed to Auburn.) Town records show Oliver Curtis as paying taxes, etc in Ward, Worcester County, Massachusetts in the years 1779, 1780, 1781, 1782, and 1783. Also so shown in the years 1786, 1787, 1788, 1789, 1790, 1791,1792, 1793, 1794, 1795, 1796, 1797, and 1798. [74] Oliver Curtis is listed in the 1790 Ward census 2 males 16 and up and 1 female. UPDATED Friday, January 31, 2003 SAC Oliver 132.16 continued An Intention of Marriage was recorded on June 8, 1797 for Oliver Curtis and Mrs. Judith Chase of Sutton, Massachusetts. [74] The Sutton, and also the Auburn, town Record of Marriages show that Mrs. Judith Chase of Sutton married Oliver Curtis of Ward on June 29, 1797. [55b] Judith Chase (nee Holman) was the widow of David Chase. Their son, Ephraim's birth is recorded as occurring in Ward March 27, 1798 in the Auburn Record of Births. [74a] [74b] Near the end of 1798 or the beginning of 1799--taxes were paid in Ward in 1798, but none are shown paid in 1799 [74a]--Oliver Curtis and family moved onto property in Sutton that Judith had received as her dower from David Chase. [7] Oliver purchased additional adjacent property in Sutton from Judith's children as shown in the Worcester County real estate records. [7] Oliver and Judith apparently held some right to additional property from Judith's mother Ruth Holman (nee Putman) that Ruth had received as her Dower when her husband, Judith's Father, Stephen Holman Died. She and Oliver signed off on this property to her Brother Eliphalet. [7] There is much additional information in real estate records clarifying the relationships between these families as listed under Oliver Curtis Grantor & Grantee. [7] May 17, 1800, Oliver and Judith's second child, Betsey was born in Sutton. [55b] The 1800 Sutton MA Census of the Oliver Curtis family shows one male under ten years of age (Ephraim Curtis, aged 2), and one female (Betsey Curtis, an infant). In the group 10 to 15 years old are shown one male (Able Chase aged 10) and two females (Polly Chase aged 12 and Sally Chase aged 14). In the group 16 to 25 years old is listed one male (Eber Chase aged 16). In the group 26 to 44 years old is listed one female (Judith (Holman) (Chase) Curtis aged 41). In the group 45 years of age and older is listed one male (Oliver Curtis aged 60). In an 1806, Summary of Hampshire County Deed 25-425 dated December 25, 1806, George Oliver, Pellham Yeoman, Granted, to Oliver Curtis, Sutton Yeoman, the Grantee, 100 acres in Pelham West Parish. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Isaac Abercrombie and William H. Abercrombie. Deed was recorded at Northampton February 10, 1807. Oliver Curtis is listed on the Pelham Tax Valuations from 1807 to 1815. This information was Provided from the Pelham Town Historian. In the group over 45 years of age are listed one female (Judith Curtis, aged 51) and one male (Oliver Curtis aged 70). He is listed on the deed, on this date as Oliver Curtis, Sharon Yeoman. [7]. The 1800 census lists this Oliver and family residing in Sharon. Oliver and his children were born in Sharon , so all indications show him a Sharon resident in April 17 1802 and prior to then . This Oliver died in Worcester, Worcester County June 10, 1837 age 80 years [12]. This Oliver Curtis is sometimes confused with the above Oliver Curtis as both men were at one time called "of Worcester" Worcester MA. Still a (third) Oliver Curtis, whose father was Ashley Curtis, was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and lived in Maine where he married twice, had several children and died there. This Oliver was descended from Henry and Jane of Marblehead. Reference: DECENDENTS OF HENRY AND JANE OF MARBLEHEAD, by Harold E. Curtis. This Henry of Marblehead through Oliver line has been heavily confused with the Henry of Sudbury through Oliver line, due to people knowing that the original emigrant in each case was named Henry. The below is exactly as written in the will of Oliver Curtis. Found at the Hampshire County Courthouse, Box #41 Article #45, Northhampton, MA. I have been hit by a ton of fraudulent emails from people claiming to be attorney's from Curtis relatives that were killed in a car accident overseas and since no heirs can be found, that they are contacting Curtis' found on the internet to receive the inheritance of approx. 9 million dollars. Are others of you also receiveing these emails? I"m not sure how my email address became available other than thru these postings and just wondered if others of you were also receiveing these emails. My husband is an attorney and unfortunately, has had a few clients that were actually victims of this scam. I would be happy to provide the details of how the scam works if you are interested...I hope none of you have been caught in this trap and am wishing you all the best in 2004.
